Signs of the Final Hour

The Smoke

The Smoke is mentioned in the Qur’an and named in authentic hadith among the major signs before the Hour. It is not a viral cloud, not a random fog, and not a place for guessing dates. It is a sign from Allah that will unfold exactly when Allah decrees.

Major Sign Mentioned in Qur’an Before the Hour
Meaning Ad-Dukhan

What is the Smoke?

The Smoke is called ad-Dukhan in Arabic. Allah mentions a clear smoke in Surah ad-Dukhan, and the Prophet ﷺ named the smoke among the ten major signs that will appear before the Hour.

This sign should be taught with calm and caution. We affirm what Allah and His Messenger ﷺ affirmed, and we do not turn every strange sky, dust storm, wildfire haze, or internet clip into the major sign of the Smoke. Revelation is clear; panic is noisy.

Qur’an Surah ad-Dukhan

The Qur’an passage about the Smoke

In Surah ad-Dukhan, Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ to wait for the day when the sky will bring a clear smoke. It will cover the people, and it is described as a painful punishment. The people will ask Allah to remove the punishment and claim that they will believe.

The passage then exposes the pattern of people who ask for relief when punishment comes, but return to rejection when relief is given. This is why the verses are not just about a sign in the sky. They are also a warning against fake repentance, stubborn denial, and treating Allah’s reminders lightly.

Important Past and future discussion

Did the Smoke already happen, or is it still to come?

There is an important scholarly discussion here. Abdullah ibn Mas’ud رضي الله عنه explained the smoke in Surah ad-Dukhan as the severe famine that struck Quraysh. Because of extreme hunger, people saw what looked like smoke between themselves and the sky, then relief came and they returned to their old rejection.

At the same time, the Prophet ﷺ clearly named the smoke among the major signs before the Hour. So the safe way to teach this page is simple: the verses of Surah ad-Dukhan were explained by Ibn Mas’ud رضي الله عنه in relation to a past punishment on Quraysh, while the hadith of the major signs confirms that the Smoke is also a sign connected to the end times.

This protects us from two mistakes: denying the major sign completely, or ignoring the early tafsir from a noble Companion. A balanced reader does not flatten the sources with a hammer.

Major Sign Before the Hour

What do we know about the future Smoke?

From the authentic hadith, we know that the Smoke is one of the major signs before the Hour. The Prophet ﷺ listed it with other great signs such as the Dajjal, the descent of Isa عليه السلام, Ya’juj and Ma’juj, the Beast, the rising of the sun from the west, three great landslides, and the fire that will drive people to their place of gathering.

The authentic hadith does not give us permission to set dates, name a country, or claim that a current weather event is definitely the Smoke. It gives us certainty that this sign is real, and it teaches us to prepare through iman, repentance, salah, and obedience before signs become visible and panic begins running through the streets.

Wrong Claims Do not teach as fact

Fabrications and wrong claims people make

The Smoke is one of those signs where people can become dramatic very quickly. A short video, a grey sky, a dust cloud, and suddenly the comment section becomes a tiny doomsday bazaar. A Muslim should not build belief on panic clips.

  • Claim: “This exact wildfire smoke, pollution cloud, or dust storm is definitely the major Smoke.” This cannot be claimed without clear revelation.
  • Claim: “The Smoke is only a metaphor and not a real sign.” The Prophet ﷺ named the smoke among the major signs, so it should not be dismissed.
  • Claim: “We know the exact date or year it will appear.” The timing of the Hour and its signs is not something people can schedule like a calendar event.
  • Claim: “The Smoke has nothing to do with Surah ad-Dukhan.” The Qur’anic passage is central to the discussion, even though scholars discussed its past and future application.
  • Claim: “Every detailed description online is authentic.” Extra details need proof. If a detail is not established from reliable sources, do not teach it as certainty.
  • Claim: “Technology or underground shelters can save people from Allah’s decree.” A sign from Allah is not defeated by human cleverness. Safety is in returning to Allah.
Lessons For believers

What this sign teaches

  • Believe in what Allah revealed. The Smoke is not a superstition. It is mentioned in the Qur’an and named in authentic hadith.
  • Do not delay repentance. Surah ad-Dukhan warns about people who ask for relief only when punishment reaches them.
  • Respect the words of the Companions. Ibn Mas’ud رضي الله عنه gave an important explanation of the smoke connected to Quraysh, and it should not be ignored.
  • Do not chase every viral claim. Major signs are matters of revelation, not internet guessing games.
  • Prepare before signs appear. Real preparation is iman, tawbah, salah, Qur’an, halal living, and asking Allah for protection from trials.
