Before Salah / Namaz

Clean Clothes and Place for Salah

Salah should be performed with clean clothing, proper covering, and a clean place of prayer. This guide explains the basic clothing and place requirements for men and women, and the importance of praying in the masjid for men when able.

Why does this matter?

Salah is standing before Allah, so a person should prepare with cleanliness, modest clothing, and a prayer place free from visible impurity.

Who is this guide for?

This guide is for both men and women. Some clothing details are different, but the purpose is the same: cleanliness, modesty, and respect before Salah.

Clothing for Men in Salah

Men should pray in clean and modest clothing that covers the body properly.

  • Wear clean clothing The clothes worn for Salah should be clean from impurity and suitable for standing before Allah.
  • Cover the body properly At minimum, the area from the navel to the knees must be covered. It is better to pray in complete, neat clothing that covers the upper body as well.
  • Cover the shoulders when possible The Prophet ﷺ instructed that a person should not pray in a single garment with nothing over the shoulders. Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 359
  • Avoid transparent or exposing clothing Clothing should not be so thin, tight, or short that it exposes what should be covered during Salah.

Clothing for Women in Salah

Women should pray in clean, modest clothing that covers the body properly for Salah.

  • Wear clean and loose clothing The clothing should be clean, modest, and suitable for prayer. It should not be transparent or too tight.
  • Cover the hair and body properly A woman who has reached maturity should pray with proper covering, including a head covering, and clothing that covers the body properly. Hadith: Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 377; Sunan Abi Dawud 641
  • Use clothing that does not distract Choose clothing that helps you pray calmly, without needing to keep adjusting it during Salah.
  • Keep a prayer garment if helpful Many women keep a clean prayer scarf, khimar, or prayer dress ready so that they can pray on time without confusion.

Clean Place for Salah

The place of prayer should be clean and free from visible impurity. A person may pray on a clean floor, prayer mat, or any clean surface.

  • Choose a clean spot Make sure the area where the forehead, hands, knees, and feet touch during Salah is clean.
  • Use a prayer mat if needed A prayer mat is helpful when the floor may not be clean, but it is not compulsory if the place itself is clean.
  • Avoid places of impurity Do not pray in washrooms, toilets, or places where impurity is present.
  • Avoid graveyards and bathrooms for Salah The hadith mentions that the earth has been made a place of prayer, except graveyards and hammam. Hadith: Sunan Ibn Majah 745
The Prophet ﷺ said that the earth was made a place of prostration and a means of purification, so wherever the time for prayer comes, a person may pray if the place is suitable and clean. Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 438; Sunan an-Nasa’i 736

Praying in the Masjid for Men

For men, the obligatory Salah should be prayed in congregation at the masjid when they are able to attend and have no valid excuse.

  • No fixed distance is given The matter is not based on a fixed distance like one or two kilometres. The important points are ability, access, safety, and hearing the adhan.
  • If a man can hear the adhan and attend A blind man asked permission to pray at home, and the Prophet ﷺ asked whether he could hear the adhan. When he said yes, the Prophet ﷺ said he did not find permission for him. Hadith: Sunan Abi Dawud 552
  • Congregational prayer has greater reward The Prophet ﷺ said that prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times superior to prayer offered alone. Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 645
  • Valid excuses are considered Illness, danger, severe hardship, or a genuine inability to reach the masjid are valid reasons. The goal is not hardship, but honouring Salah when one is able.

Women and the Masjid

Women may pray at home, and their prayer is valid. They should also not be prevented from going to the masjid if they wish to attend with modesty and proper manners.

  • Salah at home is valid for women Women may pray at home, and the prayer is valid when the conditions of Salah are fulfilled.
  • Women should not be prevented from the masjid The Prophet ﷺ instructed that women should not be prevented from going to the mosque when they seek permission. Hadith: Sahih Muslim 442b
  • Modesty and proper manners should be observed If a woman attends the masjid, she should go with modest clothing, calm manners, and without perfume that attracts attention. Hadith: Sunan Abi Dawud 565; Sunan Abi Dawud 567

Common Mistakes to Avoid

These small mistakes can affect the preparation for Salah, especially for beginners.

  • Praying in clothes with visible impurity If impurity is found on clothing, clean or change it before praying.
  • Wearing clothing that exposes the body during movement Check that the clothing still covers properly during bowing and prostration.
  • Praying in a place without checking cleanliness If the place is doubtful, choose a clean spot or use a clean prayer mat.
  • Men treating masjid prayer lightly Men should not miss the masjid without a valid excuse when they are able to attend.
  • Overthinking after preparation Once clothing and place are clean, do not keep repeating checks due to unnecessary doubts.

Clothing and Cleanliness in the Qur’an

The Qur’an reminds believers to dress properly for worship and to keep garments clean.

يَا بَنِي آدَمَ خُذُوا زِينَتَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ
Transliteration:
Ya bani Adama khudhu zinatakum ‘inda kulli masjid.

Meaning: O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid.

Qur’an: Surah Al-A‘raf, 7:31
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ
Transliteration:
Wa thiyabaka faṭahhir.
