Facing the Qibla

What is the Qibla?
The Qibla is the direction Muslims face in Salah. It is towards Al-Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, where the Ka‘bah is located.
Why does it matter?
Facing the Qibla is part of preparing for Salah. Before beginning prayer, a person should check the direction and then start Salah calmly.
Facing the Qibla in the Qur’an
Allah commanded the believers to turn their faces towards Al-Masjid al-Haram when praying.
Fa walli wajhaka shaṭral-masjidil-ḥarām. Wa ḥaythu mā kuntum fa wallū wujūhakum shaṭrah.
Meaning: So turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque. And wherever you are, turn your faces towards it.

In the hadith about teaching Salah, the Prophet ﷺ instructed the person to perform Wudu properly, then face the Qibla, then say the opening takbir.
- Face the Qibla before saying Allahu Akbar. When a person stands for Salah, he should complete purification, face the Qibla, and then begin the prayer with takbir. Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 6251; Sahih al-Bukhari 6667
- The Qibla was changed to the Ka‘bah by Allah’s command. The Prophet ﷺ and the companions first prayed facing Bayt al-Maqdis, then Allah revealed the command to face the Ka‘bah in Makkah. Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 4486
How to Find the Qibla
Use the most reliable method available in your place. The aim is to face the direction of the Ka‘bah as correctly as you can.
- Use the mosque direction. If you are in a masjid, follow the mihrab or the direction used by the congregation.
- Use a reliable Qibla app or compass. A Qibla app can help, but check that location permission and compass calibration are working properly.
- Ask someone local if you are unsure. In a new house, hotel, office, or travel place, asking a local Muslim or checking a nearby masjid can prevent confusion.
- Do not guess carelessly. If you have time and tools to check, take a moment to find the direction before starting Salah.
If You Are Unsure of the Direction
If a person is unable to know the exact direction, they should make a sincere effort using the available signs and then pray facing the direction they believe is correct.
Common Qibla Mistakes
These mistakes are easy to avoid when the direction is checked calmly before Salah.
- Thinking Qibla is always west. The Qibla direction changes depending on where a person is in the world. Do not assume the same direction everywhere.
- Starting Salah without checking in a new place. When praying in a new room, hotel, office, or travel location, check the Qibla first.
- Using an app without checking calibration. Phone compasses can be affected by metal, magnets, covers, or poor calibration. Move away from metal objects and check again if the direction looks strange.
- Ignoring the masjid direction. In a masjid, follow the mihrab or the direction of the congregation instead of relying on your phone.
- Letting small doubts disturb the prayer. After making a proper effort, do not allow repeated doubts to take away focus from Salah.
