How to Perform Tayammum

When is Tayammum Allowed?

Tayammum is only done when a person has a valid reason for not using water.

• No water is available If water cannot be found after trying reasonably, Tayammum may be performed.
• Water is needed for drinking or safety If the available water is needed for drinking or an essential need, Tayammum may be used instead of wasting that water.
• Using water may cause harm If a person is sick, wounded, or using water may worsen the condition, Tayammum may be performed until water can be used safely.
• Extreme difficulty in using water If using water is genuinely unsafe or extremely difficult, Tayammum is allowed as a purification before Salah.

What Can Be Used for Tayammum?

Tayammum should be done with something clean from the earth.

Simple Method of Tayammum

Follow these steps calmly when Tayammum is needed.

1. Make intention Make intention in your heart that you are performing Tayammum for purification before Salah.
2. Say Bismillah Begin by saying Bismillah.
3. Place or strike both hands lightly Place or strike both hands lightly on clean earth, dust, or a clean natural dusty surface.
4. Remove excess dust if needed If there is too much dust, shake or blow it off lightly. Tayammum should not be messy or dramatic.
5. Wipe the face Wipe the face with both hands.
6. Wipe both hands Wipe both hands. This completes the basic method of Tayammum.

Is There a Special Dua for Tayammum?

There is no separate specific dua required for Tayammum. Make intention in the heart and begin with Bismillah.

What Breaks Tayammum?

Tayammum remains valid until something happens that ends it.

• Anything that breaks Wudu The same things that break Wudu also break Tayammum, such as using the toilet, passing wind, deep sleep, or losing consciousness.
• Water becomes available If water becomes available and can be used safely before Salah, Tayammum ends and Wudu or Ghusl should be performed.
• The reason for Tayammum ends If Tayammum was done because of illness, injury, or harm, it ends when water can be used safely again.
• A new major impurity occurs If Tayammum was done in place of Ghusl, and a new reason for Ghusl occurs, purification must be done again.

Common Tayammum Mistakes

These are common mistakes beginners should avoid.

• Doing Tayammum when water is easily available Tayammum is for genuine need. If water is available and can be used safely, Wudu or Ghusl should be done.
• Using an unclean surface The surface used for Tayammum should be clean and suitable for purification.
• Thinking Tayammum is only for travel Tayammum may be used during travel or at home if there is a valid reason, such as illness or no usable water.
• Making the method too complicated Tayammum is simple. It is not a full-body dusting and should not be made difficult.
• Forgetting the intention The intention for purification should be made in the heart before beginning.
• Continuing Tayammum after water is available If water becomes available and can be used safely, Tayammum should not be continued without need.

The Qur’an mentions Tayammum as a mercy when water is not available or cannot be used.

Ease and Mercy in Tayammum

Tayammum shows that Allah made purification practical and merciful. A person should not leave Salah because water is unavailable or harmful to use. When there is a valid reason, Tayammum allows the believer to stand for prayer with ease and dignity.

• The earth was made a means of purification. The Prophet ﷺ said that the earth was made a place of prayer and a means of purification for his Ummah. Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 335
• Tayammum is not meant to create hardship. Allah mentions Tayammum and then says that He does not intend difficulty, but intends purification and completion of His favour. Qur’an: Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:6
