How to Perform Ghusl
Ghusl is the full-body purification bath required in specific situations before Salah. This guide explains when Ghusl is needed, how it is performed, and the important points for both men and women.
What is Ghusl?
Ghusl is a complete purification bath. It is different from Wudu because the whole body must be washed for purification from major impurity.
Who is this guide for?
This guide is for both men and women. The main method of Ghusl is the same, with extra notes for women after menstruation and postnatal bleeding.
When is Ghusl Required?
Ghusl becomes required in certain situations before a person can pray Salah.
- After Janabah Ghusl is required after major impurity, such as after marital relations or ejaculation.
- After a wet dream If a person wakes up and finds discharge after a wet dream, Ghusl is required.
- After menstruation ends A woman performs Ghusl after her menstrual bleeding has completely ended before returning to Salah.
- After postnatal bleeding ends A woman performs Ghusl after postnatal bleeding has completely ended before returning to Salah.
How to Perform Ghusl in Different Situations
The main method of Ghusl is the same for men and women. The reason for Ghusl may be different, but the body must be purified properly before Salah.
- Ghusl after Janabah Ghusl is required after intimacy, ejaculation, or a wet dream if discharge is found after waking. Make intention for purification. Wash the hands, wash the private area if needed, then perform Wudu. After that, pour water over the head and make sure water reaches the roots of the hair. Then wash the entire body properly, leaving no part dry. Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 248; Sahih Muslim 316
- If someone sees a dream but finds no discharge If a person wakes after a wet dream but does not find any discharge, Ghusl is not required. Hadith: Sahih Muslim 313
- Ghusl after menstruation When menstruation has completely ended, make intention for purification. Clean the private area well, then perform Ghusl by washing the whole body properly. Water should reach the roots of the hair. If available, a lightly scented cloth or cotton may be used for extra cleanliness. Hadith: Sahih Muslim 332c; Sahih al-Bukhari 315
- Ghusl after postnatal bleeding After postnatal bleeding has completely ended, the method is the same as Ghusl after menstruation. Make intention, clean well, and wash the entire body properly before returning to Salah.
- The essential parts of Ghusl For Ghusl to be complete, rinse the mouth, rinse the nose, and wash the entire body so that no part remains dry.
Essential Parts of Ghusl
For Ghusl to be complete, these parts should not be missed.
- Rinse the mouth Water should reach inside the mouth properly.
- Rinse the nose Water should be drawn gently into the nostrils and then expelled.
- Wash the entire body The whole body should be washed so that no dry part remains.
Simple Method of Ghusl
This is a simple way to perform Ghusl based on the Sunnah.
- Make intention Make intention in your heart that you are performing Ghusl for purification.
- Say Bismillah Begin by saying Bismillah.
- Wash both hands Wash both hands properly before beginning the bath.
- Wash the private area if needed Clean any impurity from the body before continuing.
- Perform Wudu Perform Wudu as you would for Salah.
- Pour water over the head Pour water over the head and make sure it reaches the roots of the hair.

Ghusl for Men and Women
The main method of Ghusl is the same for men and women. The whole body must be washed properly, and the mouth and nose should be rinsed.
- For men Ghusl is required after janabah, including after marital relations, ejaculation, or a wet dream when discharge is found.
- For women Ghusl is required after janabah, after menstruation ends, and after postnatal bleeding ends. If the hair is tied or braided, water must still reach the roots of the hair.
Is a Normal Bath Enough for Ghusl?
A normal bath can count as Ghusl if the intention for purification is made and the essential parts of Ghusl are completed: rinsing the mouth, rinsing the nose, and washing the whole body properly.
Recommended Ghusl
Some forms of Ghusl are done for extra cleanliness and preparation, even when Ghusl is not required because of major impurity.
Common Ghusl Mistakes
These are simple mistakes beginners should avoid when performing Ghusl.
- Forgetting the intention Make intention in the heart that this bath is for purification.
- Missing the mouth or nose Do not forget to rinse the mouth and nose during Ghusl.
- Leaving dry areas Make sure water reaches the whole body, including folds of skin, under jewellery if worn, and between fingers and toes.
- Not reaching the roots of the hair Water should reach the roots of the hair. If tied or braided hair prevents this, loosen it enough for water to reach.
- Thinking soap is compulsory Soap may be used, but Ghusl is completed by purification with water.
- Doubting unnecessarily after finishing Complete Ghusl calmly and do not keep repeating it because of unnecessary doubts.
Toilet Duas and Cleanliness
Cleanliness before and after using the toilet is an important part of purification. A person should keep the body and clothes clean from impurity, especially before Salah.
Dua Before Entering the Toilet
Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba’ith.
Meaning: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils.
Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 142; Sahih Muslim 375Dua After Leaving the Toilet
Ghufranak.
Meaning: I seek Your forgiveness.
Hadith: Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 7; Sunan Abi Dawud 30- Keep the body and clothes clean from impurity. The Qur’an teaches purification and cleanliness. Allah says, “And purify your garments.” Qur’an: Surah Al-Muddaththir, 74:4
- Allah loves those who purify themselves. Purification is not only about washing. It is also a sign of care, discipline, and readiness for worship. Qur’an: Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:222
- Be careful after urinating. The Prophet ﷺ warned about not protecting oneself from urine impurity. This shows how important cleanliness is before prayer. Hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari 216; Sahih Muslim 292
- Toilets are places where one should seek Allah’s protection. The Sunnah teaches us to seek refuge in Allah before entering the toilet because such places are connected with impurity and are places where devils may be present. Hadith: Sunan Abi Dawud 6
