Revealed In Madinah

Why It Matters It teaches that love, family ties, and worldly fear must not override loyalty to Allah, while also showing that Islam commands justice and kindness toward those who do not fight believers because of religion.
Purpose It trains the heart to separate faith-based loyalty from personal attachment, balance firmness with justice, honor believing women, and renew obedience to Allah through a sincere pledge.
Ayah 1
Surah Al-Mumtahanah

English Translation

O you who believe, do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies, offering them affection, while they have disbelieved in the truth that has come to you. They drive out the Messenger and yourselves because you believe in Allah, your Lord, if you have come out striving in My way and seeking My pleasure. You secretly offer them affection, but I know what you hide and what you reveal. And whoever among you does that has certainly strayed from the straight path.

Simple Explanation

Allah begins the surah by warning believers not to give loyal friendship and secret support to those who were actively enemies of Allah and the believers. These were not peaceful people; they rejected the truth and drove out the Messenger ﷺ and the believers because of faith.

The ayah corrects divided loyalty. A believer may have family ties, social ties, or emotional pressure, but none of these can justify helping those who fight Allah’s religion and harm believers.

Allah also says He knows what is hidden and what is open. Secret loyalty against the truth may be hidden from people, but it is never hidden from Allah.

Ayah 2
Surah Al-Mumtahanah

وَوَدُّوا۟Wa waddooand they wish
لَوْ تَكْفُرُونَLaw takfuroonthat you would disbelieve

Simple Explanation

Allah explains why such loyalty is dangerous: if these enemies gained power, they would harm the believers with their hands and tongues.

Their hostility was not only political or social. They wished the believers would leave faith. This made them a direct danger to religion and community.

This ayah teaches discernment. Believers must distinguish between peaceful relationships and those who actively want to harm their faith.

Ayah 3
Surah Al-Mumtahanah

Bainakumbetween you
بَصِيرٌBaseerAll-Seeing

Simple Explanation

Allah reminds believers that family and children cannot save a person on the Day of Resurrection if they betrayed Allah for their sake.

Family love is natural and important, but it must not become greater than loyalty to Allah. On the Day of Judgment, every soul will stand by its own faith and deeds.

This ayah teaches that emotional attachments must be guided by the Hereafter. The believer loves family, but never at the cost of disobeying Allah.

English Translation

There has already been for you an excellent example in Ibrahim and those with him, when they said to their people, We are free from you and from whatever you worship besides Allah. We reject you, and there has appeared between us and you enmity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone, except for the saying of Ibrahim to his father, I will surely ask forgiveness for you, but I have no power for you against Allah in anything. Our Lord, upon You we rely, to You we return, and to You is the final destination.

ٱلْمَصِيرُAl-maseerfinal destination

Simple Explanation

Allah gives Ibrahim عليه السلام and those with him as an excellent example. They clearly separated themselves from shirk and false worship, even when it meant standing apart from their own people.

This does not mean cruelty or injustice. It means the heart’s loyalty cannot remain attached to disbelief and worship besides Allah. Tawheed must be clear.

The exception mentioned about Ibrahim’s words to his father shows that he hoped for him before it became clear that his father remained an enemy to Allah. The ayah ends with beautiful reliance: upon Allah we rely, to Him we return, and to Him is the final destination.

ٱلْعَزِيزُAl-‘Azeezthe Almighty
ٱلْحَكِيمُAl-Hakeemthe All-Wise

Simple Explanation

This is part of the dua of Ibrahim عليه السلام and the believers with him. They ask Allah not to make them a trial for disbelievers, meaning not to let enemies overpower them in a way that causes confusion or mockery toward faith.

They also ask forgiveness, showing humility even while standing firmly for tawheed.

This ayah teaches that believers need both courage and forgiveness. Standing for truth does not make a person arrogant; it should make them more dependent on Allah.

Simple Explanation

Allah repeats that Ibrahim عليه السلام and those with him are an excellent example, especially for anyone who hopes in Allah and the Last Day.

This example is not only historical; it is practical guidance for every believer who must choose Allah over pressure, fear, or attachment.

Allah does not need anyone’s obedience. If people turn away, Allah remains Free of need and Praiseworthy. We are the ones who need guidance.

Simple Explanation

After teaching firmness in loyalty, Allah opens the door of hope. Some people who were once enemies may later become people of faith and affection.

This shows that firmness against disbelief and hostility is not the same as hopeless hatred of people. Hearts can change by Allah’s power.

The ayah teaches balance: stand firm upon truth, but do not deny Allah’s ability to turn enemies into loved ones and guide whom He wills.

Simple Explanation

This ayah gives a clear balance. Allah does not forbid believers from showing kindness and justice to non-Muslims who do not fight them because of religion and do not expel them from their homes.

Islamic loyalty to Allah does not mean injustice or cruelty toward peaceful people. Kindness and fairness remain part of faith.

Allah loves those who act justly. This ayah is essential because it separates forbidden loyalty to hostile enemies from permitted kindness and justice toward peaceful people.

ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَAz-zaalimeenwrongdoers

Simple Explanation

Allah clarifies the forbidden relationship: taking as allies those who actively fought believers because of religion, expelled them, or helped in their expulsion.

This is not about ordinary peaceful difference. It is about hostile support against faith and the believing community.

The ayah teaches moral clarity. Justice and kindness are required with peaceful people, but loyal support must not be given to those who persecute believers for their religion.

O you who believe, when believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them. Allah knows best their faith. Then if you know them to be believing women, do not return them to the disbelievers. They are not lawful for them, nor are they lawful for them. And give them what they spent. There is no blame upon you if you marry them when you have given them their due compensation. And do not hold to marriage bonds with disbelieving women. Ask for what you spent, and let them ask for what they spent. That is the judgment of Allah; He judges between you. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.

عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ‘Aleemun HakeemKnowing, Wise

Simple Explanation

Allah gives rulings about believing women who migrated to the Muslim community. Their faith was to be examined outwardly, while Allah alone truly knew what was inside their hearts.

If they were known as believers, they were not to be returned to disbelieving husbands because the bond was no longer lawful between them. At the same time, financial fairness was maintained by returning what had been spent.

This ayah shows justice, protection, and dignity for believing women. It also shows that law in Islam is not based on emotion alone, but on Allah’s knowledge and wisdom.

Simple Explanation

Allah continues the financial fairness connected to marital separation across the line of faith and community. If some believers lost what they had spent because their wives went to the disbelievers, compensation was to be given when possible.

The ruling protects people from being financially crushed during a painful religious and family separation.

This ayah teaches that Allah’s law cares about both faith and fairness. Even in tense situations, taqwa must guide how money and rights are handled.

O Prophet, when believing women come to you pledging that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill their children, nor bring a slander they invent between their hands and feet, nor disobey you in what is right, then accept their pledge and ask Allah to forgive them. Indeed, Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Simple Explanation

Allah instructs the Prophet ﷺ to accept the pledge of believing women when they commit to the foundations of faith and moral life.

The pledge includes avoiding shirk, theft, zina, killing children, inventing slander, and disobeying the Prophet ﷺ in what is right. This shows that faith is not only belief in the heart, but also a moral commitment in life.

The Prophet ﷺ is also told to seek forgiveness for them. This teaches that even after pledging obedience, believers still need Allah’s forgiveness and mercy.

ٱلْكُفَّارُAl-kuffaarthe disbelievers
أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْقُبُورِAshaabil-quboorcompanions of the graves

Simple Explanation

The surah ends as it began: warning believers not to give loyal alliance to those under Allah’s anger and cut off from hope in the Hereafter.

People who have no real hope in the Hereafter live by a different compass. If a believer gives them heart-level loyalty over Allah’s guidance, the believer’s own direction becomes endangered.

This final ayah teaches that loyalty must be shaped by faith and the Last Day. The believer is kind and just where Allah allows, but the deepest allegiance belongs only to Allah and those who stand with His truth.
