The Day of Resurrection (Yawm al-Qiyamah)

What Yawm al-Qiyamah means

• Yawm al-Qiyamah means the Day of Standing and Resurrection. Creation will be raised, gathered, and made to stand before Allah.
• It is part of belief in the Last Day. A Muslim believes this Day is real, bodily resurrection is real, and no soul will escape Allah’s justice.
• It is not only a symbol. The Qur’an speaks about graves opening, bodies being raised, deeds being shown, and people standing before Allah.
• The exact time is known only to Allah. No prophet, angel, scholar, dreamer, calculation, or online prediction can reveal its date.
• This page covers the beginning of Qiyamah. The later pages will explain al-Hashr, al-Hisab, al-Mizan, as-Sirat, the Hawd, intercession, Jannah, and Jahannam.

Names and descriptions of that Day

The Trumpet will be blown

• The Qur’an mentions the blowing of the Trumpet. This is one of the great events connected to the end of worldly life and the beginning of resurrection.
• At one blowing, those in the heavens and earth will fall as Allah wills. No created power can resist the command of Allah.
• At the next blowing, people will rise. They will stand, look, and move toward what Allah has decreed for them.
• The exact unseen details are not ours to decorate. We believe what Allah and His Messenger ﷺ taught without turning it into dramatic invented pictures.
• The time between the two blowings is not specified clearly for us. In the hadith, Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه mentioned forty, but did not say whether days, months, or years.

How people will be brought back

• Allah will bring people back with body and soul. Resurrection is not only a spiritual memory or a metaphor.
• The One who created the first time can recreate. The Qur’an answers those who mock resurrection by reminding them of Allah’s perfect power.
• Allah is able to restore even the fingertips. This teaches that no part of the human being is beyond Allah’s knowledge and power.
• People will grow after Allah sends water from the sky. The hadith describes bodies growing like vegetation grows.
• The tailbone/coccyx is mentioned in authentic hadith. From it the human being will be recreated on the Day of Resurrection.
• Every person will rise for himself or herself. Family name, followers, beauty, property, and status will not carry anyone through that Day.

What happens to the earth, sky, mountains, sun, and moon

• The earth will shake with its final shaking. This is not an ordinary earthquake; it is part of the Day Allah has promised.
• The earth will bring out its burdens. People will see what they denied, ignored, and buried beneath worldly noise.
• The earth will report its news. A person should not think secret sins are truly hidden from Allah.
• The mountains will lose the stability people imagined. The Qur’an describes them like carded wool and scattered dust in different passages.
• The sky will be split and changed. The created order people relied on will no longer continue as usual.
• The sun and moon are mentioned in end-time scenes. The Qur’an mentions the moon being eclipsed and the sun and moon being joined, and authentic hadith mentions the sun and moon being folded up on the Day of Resurrection.

How people will come out from the graves

• People will rush from their graves to their Lord. The world that distracted them will be gone, and the command of Allah will move them forward.
• The Qur’an describes them as if they are scattered locusts. This shows their huge number, movement, and helplessness before the command of Allah.
• People will be gathered barefoot, unclothed, and uncircumcised. The Prophet ﷺ taught this clearly in authentic hadith.
• When Aishah رضي الله عنها asked about men and women seeing each other, the Prophet ﷺ said the matter will be too severe for that. This teaches the terror and seriousness of that Day.
• Ibrahim عليه السلام will be the first to be clothed. This is mentioned in the sermon of the Prophet ﷺ recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari.
• No worldly costume remains. Crowns, titles, brands, uniforms, and social status will be peeled away like paper from a wall.

The fear and hardship of that Day

• The Day will be heavy on the heavens and the earth. Allah describes it as tremendous, sudden, and not something people can treat casually.
• The sun will be brought near to people. People will be in sweat according to their deeds, with levels mentioned in authentic hadith.
• Some people will be protected by Allah’s shade. The hadith of the seven under Allah’s shade teaches us what kind of lives prepare a person for that Day.
• Arguments and excuses will collapse. A person may give excuses in the world, but on that Day the person will know what he or she sent forward.
• Even small deeds matter. Allah says whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.
• Fear should produce repentance, not despair. The Day is terrifying, but Allah opened the door of repentance while we are still able to return to Him.

What will help a believer on that Day?

• Sincere tawhid. The heart must belong to Allah alone, not idols, graves, charms, stars, jinn, saints, or the self.
• Repentance before the soul reaches its final moment. The one who keeps returning to Allah is not like the one who proudly postpones repentance.
• Salah protected with seriousness. The person who stands before Allah in salah is training for the greater standing.
• Secret good deeds. Charity hidden, tears in private, and dhikr away from show are treasures for the Day when people are exposed.
• Justice and self-control. The hadith of the seven under Allah’s shade includes justice, worship in youth, love for the masjid, love for Allah’s sake, resisting temptation, hidden charity, and private remembrance.
• Rights of people returned before Qiyamah. Do not carry stolen money, backbiting, oppression, unpaid debts, or broken trusts into that Day like stones tied around the neck.
• Following the Sunnah without inventing religion. The Prophet ﷺ warned that some people would be turned away because of what they introduced after him.

Duas for safety on the Last Day

Wrong claims people make about Qiyamah

• “Qiyamah will happen on this exact date.” This is false. The knowledge of the Hour belongs to Allah alone.
• “A dream proved the date of Qiyamah.” Dreams cannot override the Qur’an and Sunnah.
• “Qiyamah is only symbolic.” The Qur’an and authentic hadith describe real resurrection, standing, gathering, and recompense.
• “Technology, science, or powerful rulers can stop it.” The Hour comes by Allah’s command, not by human permission.
• “If someone is religiously famous, they are automatically safe.” Safety belongs to Allah. A person must hold to tawhid, sincerity, repentance, and obedience.
• “The small signs or major signs are a game for viral fear.” Signs should make people repent, not chase panic-content.
• “The Day is far away, so repentance can wait.” Your own meeting with Allah may come before the public end of the world. Preparation cannot be rented at the last minute.

What this belief should change in us

• Live like you will be raised. Your body, tongue, eyes, hands, money, messages, and hidden habits are all under Allah’s knowledge.
• Do not delay tawbah. The heart that keeps postponing repentance is making a dangerous deal with time.
• Make your private life clean. The earth will report, the record will appear, and Allah already knows.
• Value small deeds. A hidden dhikr, a quiet charity, a restrained word, and a tear in private are not lost with Allah.
• Fear Allah more than people. People see fragments; Allah sees the whole file.
• Ask for safety often. The believer does not rely on ego. The believer begs Allah for mercy.
• Learn the next stages. After resurrection comes gathering, reckoning, the scale, the Sirat, the Hawd, intercession, and the final homes.
