Signs of the Final Hour

Knowledge, Ignorance, and Trust

Among the signs of the Hour is that true religious knowledge will be reduced, ignorance will become widespread, and positions of trust will be handed to people who are not fit for them. This is not about the disappearance of information. It is about the weakening of guided knowledge, truthful scholarship, and amanah.

Minor Sign Status: Ongoing Increasing before the Hour

What this sign means

This sign does not mean that books, recordings, lectures, websites, and discussions will vanish from the earth. A time may have more information than any earlier generation, yet still suffer from deep ignorance if people no longer know how to take religion from its proper sources.

In Islam, knowledge is not noise. Knowledge is guidance rooted in the Qur’an, the authentic Sunnah, the understanding of the Companions, and the careful work of trustworthy scholars. When that chain weakens, people may speak confidently without knowledge, give verdicts without qualification, and treat the religion like an opinion market.

The Prophet ﷺ connected the loss of knowledge with the rise of ignorance and the loss of trust. These three are linked. When knowledge weakens, people become easier to mislead. When ignorance spreads, unfit voices become louder. When trust is lost, responsibility is placed in the wrong hands, and communities suffer.

  • Qur’an 17:36: Allah warns not to follow what one has no knowledge of.
  • Qur’an 58:11: Allah raises those who believe and those who are given knowledge in ranks.

  • Sahih al-Bukhari 59 and Sahih al-Bukhari 6496: The Prophet ﷺ said that when trust is lost and authority is given to those who do not deserve it, people should wait for the Hour.
Sign 01 Knowledge taken away

Religious knowledge will be reduced

  • The Prophet ﷺ explained how knowledge is taken away. Allah does not remove knowledge by simply pulling it out of people’s hearts all at once. Rather, knowledge is taken away when scholars are taken from the world.
  • Scholars preserve more than information. They preserve meanings, protect the religion from distortion, teach adab, correct misunderstandings, and stop people from turning desires into rulings.
  • The believer should respect authentic knowledge. A Muslim learns from reliable teachers and avoids turning religion into guesswork, because one careless religious answer can mislead a person in worship, family, money, halal and haram, or belief.

  • Sahih Muslim 2673a: The same meaning is reported, showing that the disappearance of knowledge happens through the loss of learned people.
  • Qur’an 16:43: The Qur’anic cure for not knowing is to ask the people of knowledge, not to invent answers.
Sign 02 Ignorance spread

Ignorance will become widespread

  • The spread of ignorance is not only illiteracy. It means people may not know Allah properly, may not understand the basics of worship, may confuse truth with popularity, and may take rulings from people who speak without fear and without qualification.
  • People may debate more but understand less. They may collect clips, slogans, and emotional arguments without learning the principles that protect a person from misusing the religion.
  • Ignorance causes other signs to grow. When people do not know Allah’s limits, sins become normal. When they do not know the Sunnah, innovations can become attractive. When they do not know the Hereafter, worldly success becomes the measure of truth.

Sign 03 Trust weakened

Trust will be lost and responsibility given to the unfit

  • Amanah means trust, responsibility, and honesty. It includes religious leadership, public authority, teaching, judging, family responsibility, business dealings, and every position where people depend on someone’s truthfulness and ability.
  • The Prophet ﷺ gave a clear sign. When authority is given to those who do not deserve it, people should wait for the Hour. This is not only about rulers. It includes any place where responsibility is handed to someone while knowledge, honesty, and ability are ignored.
  • When trust is lost, harm spreads quietly. The ignorant may be treated as scholars, the dishonest may be trusted with people’s wealth, the careless may be given leadership, and the loudest voice may replace the most truthful one.

Response Protect knowledge and amanah

How a believer should respond

The answer to this sign is not panic. The answer is to become more serious with knowledge and amanah. A Muslim should learn the foundations of faith, purification, Salah, halal and haram, family duties, character, and the rights of people.

A Muslim should also be careful before forwarding religious claims, giving rulings, or arguing about matters beyond their knowledge. Saying “I do not know” is not weakness. It is protection. The early scholars feared speaking about Allah without knowledge, because religion is not a stage for ego.

  • Learn from reliable sources. Give priority to the Qur’an, authentic Sunnah, and trustworthy scholars who are known for knowledge and balance.
  • Do not speak without knowledge. Avoid careless answers in religion, especially in halal and haram, marriage, divorce, inheritance, creed, and worship.
  • Protect amanah. If you are given responsibility, carry it with honesty. If choosing someone for responsibility, choose knowledge, trustworthiness, and ability over popularity.
  • Make dua for beneficial knowledge. The useful knowledge is the one that brings a person closer to Allah and reforms action.
