الٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ٱلْمُبِينِ ١
Alif-Lam-Ra. Tilka ayatul-kitabil-mubin.
Alif-Lam-Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book.

إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ قُرْءَٰنًا عَرَبِيًّۭا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ ٢
Inna anzalnahu Qur’anan ‘Arabiyyal-la‘allakum ta‘qilun.
Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran so that you may understand.

نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ أَحْسَنَ ٱلْقَصَصِ بِمَآ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ هَـٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ وَإِن كُنتَ مِن قَبْلِهِۦ لَمِنَ ٱلْغَـٰفِلِينَ ٣
Nahnu naqussu ‘alaika ahsanal-qasasi bima awhaina ilaika hadhal-Qur’an, wa in kunta min qablihi laminal-ghafilin.
We relate to you the best of stories through what We have revealed to you of this Quran, although before it you were among those unaware.

Simple Explanation

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, did not know this story in detail before revelation. Allah revealed it as truth, comfort, and guidance.

إِذْ قَالَ يُوسُفُ لِأَبِيهِ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ إِنِّى رَأَيْتُ أَحَدَ عَشَرَ كَوْكَبًۭا وَٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ رَأَيْتُهُمْ لِى سَـٰجِدِينَ ٤
Idh qala Yusufu li-abihi ya abati inni ra’aitu ahada ‘ashara kawkaban wash-shamsa wal-qamara ra’aituhum li sajidin.
When Yusuf said to his father, “O my dear father, indeed I saw eleven stars, and the sun and the moon. I saw them prostrating to me.”

قَالَ يَـٰبُنَىَّ لَا تَقْصُصْ رُءْيَاكَ عَلَىٰٓ إِخْوَتِكَ فَيَكِيدُوا۟ لَكَ كَيْدًا ۖ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ عَدُوٌّۭ مُّبِينٌۭ ٥
Qala ya bunayya la taqsus ru’yaka ‘ala ikhwatika fa yakidu laka kaida. Innash-shaitana lil-insani ‘aduwwum-mubin.
He said, “O my dear son, do not tell your dream to your brothers, or they may plot against you. Indeed, Shaytan is a clear enemy to the human being.”

وَكَذَٰلِكَ يَجْتَبِيكَ رَبُّكَ وَيُعَلِّمُكَ مِن تَأْوِيلِ ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ وَيُتِمُّ نِعْمَتَهُۥ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰٓ ءَالِ يَعْقُوبَ كَمَآ أَتَمَّهَا عَلَىٰٓ أَبَوَيْكَ مِن قَبْلُ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۭ ٦
Wa kadhalika yajtabika rabbuka wa yu‘allimuka min ta’wilil-ahadithi wa yutimmu ni‘matahu ‘alaika wa ‘ala ali Ya‘quba kama atammaha ‘ala abawaika min qablu Ibrahima wa Ishaq. Inna rabbaka ‘alimun hakim.
And in this way your Lord will choose you, teach you the interpretation of events, and complete His favour upon you and upon the family of Ya‘qub, as He completed it before upon your forefathers Ibrahim and Ishaq. Indeed, your Lord is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

لَّقَدْ كَانَ فِى يُوسُفَ وَإِخْوَتِهِۦٓ ءَايَـٰتٌۭ لِّلسَّآئِلِينَ ٧
Laqad kana fi Yusufa wa ikhwatihi ayatul-lis-sa’ilin.
Surely, in Yusuf and his brothers there are signs for those who ask.

إِذْ قَالُوا۟ لَيُوسُفُ وَأَخُوهُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىٰٓ أَبِينَا مِنَّا وَنَحْنُ عُصْبَةٌ إِنَّ أَبَانَا لَفِى ضَلَـٰلٍۢ مُّبِينٍ ٨
Idh qalu laYusufu wa akhuhu ahabbu ila abina minna wa nahnu ‘usbah, inna abana lafi dalalim-mubin.
When they said, “Yusuf and his brother are more beloved to our father than we are, while we are a strong group. Indeed, our father is clearly mistaken.”

ٱقْتُلُوا۟ يُوسُفَ أَوِ ٱطْرَحُوهُ أَرْضًۭا يَخْلُ لَكُمْ وَجْهُ أَبِيكُمْ وَتَكُونُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ قَوْمًۭا صَـٰلِحِينَ ٩
Uqtulu Yusufa aw itrahuhu ardan yakhlu lakum wajhu abikum wa takunu mim ba‘dihi qawman salihin.
“Kill Yusuf or throw him into some land, so your father’s attention may be only for you, and after that you may become righteous people.”

Simple Explanation

قَالَ قَآئِلٌۭ مِّنْهُمْ لَا تَقْتُلُوا۟ يُوسُفَ وَأَلْقُوهُ فِى غَيَـٰبَتِ ٱلْجُبِّ يَلْتَقِطْهُ بَعْضُ ٱلسَّيَّارَةِ إِن كُنتُمْ فَـٰعِلِينَ ١٠
Qala qa’ilum-minhum la taqtulu Yusufa wa alquhu fi ghayabatil-jubbi yaltaqithu ba‘dus-sayyarati in kuntum fa‘ilin.
One of them said, “Do not kill Yusuf. Throw him into the hidden depth of the well, so that some travellers may pick him up, if you are going to do something.”

قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَا مَا لَكَ لَا تَأْمَنَّا عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَنَـٰصِحُونَ ١١
Qalu ya abana ma laka la ta’manna ‘ala Yusufa wa inna lahu lanasihun.
They said, “O our father, why do you not trust us with Yusuf, while indeed we are sincere advisers to him?”

أَرْسِلْهُ مَعَنَا غَدًۭا يَرْتَعْ وَيَلْعَبْ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ ١٢
Arsilhu ma‘ana ghadan yarta‘ wa yal‘ab wa inna lahu lahafizun.
“Send him with us tomorrow so he may enjoy himself and play, and indeed we will surely guard him.”

قَالَ إِنِّى لَيَحْزُنُنِىٓ أَن تَذْهَبُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَأَخَافُ أَن يَأْكُلَهُ ٱلذِّئْبُ وَأَنتُمْ عَنْهُ غَـٰفِلُونَ ١٣
Qala inni layahzununi an tadhhabu bihi wa akhafu an ya’kulahudh-dhi’bu wa antum ‘anhu ghafilun.
He said, “Indeed, it saddens me that you should take him away, and I fear that the wolf may eat him while you are unaware of him.”

فَلَمَّا ذَهَبُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَأَجْمَعُوٓا۟ أَن يَجْعَلُوهُ فِى غَيَـٰبَتِ ٱلْجُبِّ ۚ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ لَتُنَبِّئَنَّهُم بِأَمْرِهِمْ هَـٰذَا وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ ١٥
Falamma dhahabu bihi wa ajma‘u an yaj‘aluhu fi ghayabatil-jubb. Wa awhaina ilaihi latunabbi’annahum bi-amrihim hadha wa hum la yash‘urun.
So when they took him away and agreed to put him into the hidden depth of the well, We revealed to him, “You will surely inform them about this matter of theirs while they do not realize.”

They said, “O our father, we went racing and left Yusuf with our belongings, then the wolf ate him. But you will not believe us, even if we are truthful.”

Wa ja’u ‘ala qamisihi bidamin kadhib. Qala bal sawwalat lakum anfusukum amra. Fasabrun jamil. Wallahul-musta‘anu ‘ala ma tasifun.
And they brought false blood on his shirt. He said, “Rather, your souls have made something seem pleasing to you. So beautiful patience is best. And Allah is the One sought for help against what you describe.”

Wa ja’at sayyaratun fa arsalu waridahum fa adla dalwah. Qala ya bushra hadha ghulam. Wa asarruhu bida‘ah. Wallahu ‘alimum bima ya‘malun.
And a caravan came, so they sent their water-drawer, and he let down his bucket. He said, “Good news! This is a boy.” And they hid him as merchandise. And Allah was fully aware of what they were doing.

Wa qalal-ladhish-tarahu mim-Misra limra’atihi akrimi mathwahu ‘asa an yanfa‘ana aw nattakhidhahu walada. Wa kadhalika makkanna liYusufa fil-ard wa linu‘allimahu min ta’wilil-ahadith. Wallahu ghalibun ‘ala amrihi wa lakinna aktharan-nasi la ya‘lamun.
The man from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, “Make his stay honourable. Perhaps he may benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son.” And in this way We established Yusuf in the land, so that We might teach him the interpretation of events. Allah is dominant over His affair, but most people do not know.

Wa rawadat-hul-lati huwa fi baitiha ‘an nafsihi wa ghallaqatil-abwaba wa qalat haita lak. Qala ma‘adhallah, innahu rabbi ahsana mathway. Innahu la yuflihuz-zalimun.
And the woman in whose house he was tried to seduce him. She locked the doors and said, “Come to me.” He said, “I seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, he is my master who has made my stay honourable. Surely, wrongdoers do not succeed.”

وَلَقَدْ هَمَّتْ بِهِۦ ۖ وَهَمَّ بِهَا لَوْلَآ أَن رَّءَا بُرْهَـٰنَ رَبِّهِۦ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ لِنَصْرِفَ عَنْهُ ٱلسُّوٓءَ وَٱلْفَحْشَآءَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ ٢٤
Wa laqad hammat bihi wa hamma biha lawla an ra’a burhana rabbih. Kadhalika linasrifa ‘anhus-su’a wal-fahsha’. Innahu min ‘ibadinal-mukhlasin.
She certainly desired him, and he would have inclined toward her had he not seen the proof of his Lord. Thus We turned away from him evil and immorality. Indeed, he was among Our chosen sincere servants.

Falamma sami‘at bimakrihinna arsalat ilaihinna wa a‘tadat lahunna muttaka’an wa atat kulla wahidatim-minhunna sikkinan wa qalatikhruj ‘alaihinna. Falamma ra’ainahu akbarnahu wa qatta‘na aidiyahunna wa qulna hash lillahi ma hadha bashara, in hadha illa malakun karim.

وَدَخَلَ مَعَهُ ٱلسِّجْنَ فَتَيَانِ ۖ قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَآ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰنِىٓ أَعْصِرُ خَمْرًۭا ۖ وَقَالَ ٱلْـَٔاخَرُ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰنِىٓ أَحْمِلُ فَوْقَ رَأْسِى خُبْزًۭا تَأْكُلُ ٱلطَّيْرُ مِنْهُ ۖ نَبِّئْنَا بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦٓ ۖ إِنَّا نَرَىٰكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ ٣٦
Wa dakhala ma‘ahus-sijna fatayan. Qala ahaduhuma inni arani a‘siru khamra. Wa qalal-akhara inni arani ahmilu fawqa ra’si khubzan ta’kulut-tairu minh. Nabbi’na bita’wilih. Inna naraka minal-muhsinin.
And two young men entered prison with him. One of them said, “I saw myself pressing wine.” The other said, “I saw myself carrying bread on my head from which birds were eating. Tell us its interpretation. Indeed, we see you as one of those who do good with excellence.”

Qala la ya’tikuma ta‘amun turzaqanihi illa nabba’tukuma bita’wilihi qabla an ya’tiyakuma. Dhalikuma mimma ‘allamani rabbi. Inni taraktu millata qawmil-la yu’minuna billahi wa hum bil-akhirati hum kafirun.
He said, “No food will come to you as provision except that I will inform you of its interpretation before it comes to you. That is from what my Lord has taught me. Indeed, I have left the way of a people who do not believe in Allah, and they are disbelievers in the Hereafter.”

Wattaba‘tu millata aba’i Ibrahima wa Ishaqa wa Ya‘qub. Ma kana lana an nushrika billahi min shai’. Dhalika min fadlillahi ‘alaina wa ‘alan-nasi wa lakinna aktharan-nasi la yashkurun.
“And I have followed the way of my fathers Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Ya‘qub. It is not for us to associate anything with Allah. That is from Allah’s favour upon us and upon people, but most people are not grateful.”

Ma ta‘buduna min dunihi illa asma’an sammaytumuha antum wa aba’ukum ma anzalallahu biha min sultan. Inil-hukmu illa lillah. Amara alla ta‘budu illa iyyah. Dhalikad-dinul-qayyimu wa lakinna aktharan-nasi la ya‘lamun.

And the king said, “Bring him to me.” But when the messenger came to Yusuf, he said, “Return to your master and ask him what happened with the women who cut their hands. Indeed, my Lord is fully aware of their plotting.”

Wa lamma jahhazahum bijahazihim qalatuni bi akhil-lakum min abikum. Ala tarawna anni ufil-kaila wa ana khairul-munzilin.
And when he had supplied them with their provisions, he said, “Bring me a brother of yours from your father. Do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of hosts?”

Wa lamma fatahu mata‘ahum wajadu bida‘atahum ruddat ilaihim. Qalu ya abana ma nabghi, hadhihi bida‘atuna ruddat ilaina, wa namiru ahlana wa nahfazu akhana wa nazdadu kaila ba‘ir. Dhalika kailuy-yasir.
When they opened their belongings, they found their goods returned to them. They said, “O our father, what more could we want? These are our goods returned to us. We can bring provisions for our family, guard our brother, and receive an extra camel-load of grain. That is an easy measure.”

Qala lan ursilahu ma‘akum hatta tu’tuni mawthiqam-minallahi lata’tunnani bihi illa an yuhata bikum. Falamma atawhu mawthiqahum qalallahu ‘ala ma naqulu wakil.
He said, “I will never send him with you until you give me a solemn pledge by Allah that you will surely bring him back to me, unless you are completely surrounded.” When they gave him their pledge, he said, “Allah is a witness over what we say.”

Wa qala ya baniyya la tadkhulu mim babiw-wahid, wadkhulu min abwabim-mutafarriqah. Wa ma ughni ‘ankum minallahi min shai’. Inil-hukmu illa lillah. ‘Alaihi tawakkaltu wa ‘alaihi falyatawakkalil-mutawakkilun.
And he said, “O my sons, do not enter from one gate, but enter from different gates. Yet I cannot protect you from Allah in anything. Judgment belongs only to Allah. Upon Him I rely, and upon Him let those who rely place their trust.”

فَلَمَّا جَهَّزَهُم بِجَهَازِهِمْ جَعَلَ ٱلسِّقَايَةَ فِى رَحْلِ أَخِيهِ ثُمَّ أَذَّنَ مُؤَذِّنٌ أَيَّتُهَا ٱلْعِيرُ إِنَّكُمْ لَسَـٰرِقُونَ ٧٠
Falamma jahhazahum bijahazihim ja‘alas-siqayata fi rahli akhihi thumma adhdhana mu’adhdhinun ayyatuhal-‘iru innakum lasariqun.
Then when he had supplied them with their provisions, he placed the drinking cup in his brother’s bag. Then a caller announced, “O caravan, indeed you are surely thieves!”

فَبَدَأَ بِأَوْعِيَتِهِمْ قَبْلَ وِعَآءِ أَخِيهِ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَخْرَجَهَا مِن وِعَآءِ أَخِيهِ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ كِدْنَا لِيُوسُفَ ۖ مَا كَانَ لِيَأْخُذَ أَخَاهُ فِى دِينِ ٱلْمَلِكِ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ نَرْفَعُ دَرَجَـٰتٍۢ مَّن نَّشَآءُ ۗ وَفَوْقَ كُلِّ ذِى عِلْمٍ عَلِيمٌۭ ٧٦
Fabada’a bi aw‘iyatihim qabla wi‘a’i akhihi thummastakhrajaha min wi‘a’i akhih. Kadhalika kidna liYusuf. Ma kana liya’khudha akhahu fi dinil-maliki illa an yasha’Allah. Narfa‘u darajatin man nasha’, wa fawqa kulli dhi ‘ilmin ‘alim.
So he began with their bags before the bag of his brother, then he brought it out from his brother’s bag. In this way We planned for Yusuf. فَلَمَّا ٱسْتَيْـَٔسُوا۟ مِنْهُ خَلَصُوا۟ نَجِيًّۭا ۖ قَالَ كَبِيرُهُمْ أَلَمْ تَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ أَبَاكُمْ قَدْ أَخَذَ عَلَيْكُم مَّوْثِقًۭا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمِن قَبْلُ مَا فَرَّطتُمْ فِى يُوسُفَ ۖ فَلَنْ أَبْرَحَ ٱلْأَرْضَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْذَنَ لِىٓ أَبِىٓ أَوْ يَحْكُمَ ٱللَّهُ لِى ۖ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ ٨٠
Falammastai’asu minhu khalasu najiyya. Qala kabiruhum alam ta‘lamu anna abakum qad akhadha ‘alaikum mawthiqam-minallahi wa min qablu ma farrattum fi Yusuf. Falan abrahal-arda hatta ya’dhana li abi aw yahkumallahu li, wa huwa khairul-hakimin.
When they lost hope of him, they withdrew privately. The eldest of them said, “Do you not know that your father took a solemn pledge from you by Allah, and before this you failed regarding Yusuf? Irji‘u ila abikum faqulu ya abana innabnaka saraqa, wa ma shahidna illa bima ‘alimna, wa ma kunna lil-ghaibi hafizin.
“Return to your father and say, ‘O our father, indeed your son stole. We testify only to what we know, and we could not guard against the unseen.’”

وَسْـَٔلِ ٱلْقَرْيَةَ ٱلَّتِى كُنَّا فِيهَا وَٱلْعِيرَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَقْبَلْنَا فِيهَا ۖ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ ٨٢
Was’alil-qaryatal-lati kunna fiha wal-‘iral-lati aqbalna fiha, wa inna lasadiqun.
“And ask the town where we were, and the caravan with which we returned. Indeed, we are surely truthful.”

Qala bal sawwalat lakum anfusukum amra, fasabrun jamil. ‘Asallahu an ya’tiyani bihim jami‘a. Innahu huwal-‘alimul-hakim.
He said, “Rather, your souls have made something seem pleasing to you. So beautiful patience is best. Perhaps Allah will bring them all back to me. Indeed, He is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.”

Falamma dakhalu ‘alaihi qalu ya ayyuhal-‘azizu massana wa ahlanad-durru wa ji’na bibida‘atim-muzjatin fa awfi lanal-kaila wa tasaddaq ‘alaina. Innallaha yajzil-mutasaddiqin.
When they entered upon him, they said, “O Al-‘Aziz, hardship has touched us and our family, and we have come with goods of little worth. So give us full measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allah rewards those who give charity.”

Falamma an ja’al-bashiru alqahu ‘ala wajhihi fartadda basira. Qala alam aqul lakum inni a‘lamu minallahi ma la ta‘lamun.
Then when the bearer of good news came, he placed it over his face, and he regained sight. He said, “Did I not tell you that I know from Allah what you do not know?”

Wa rafa‘a abawaihi ‘alal-‘arshi wa kharru lahu sujjada. Wa qala ya abati hadha ta’wilu ru’yaya min qablu qad ja‘alaha rabbi haqqa. Wa qad ahsana bi idh akhrajani minas-sijni wa ja’a bikum minal-badwi mim ba‘di an nazaghash-shaitanu baini wa baina ikhwaiti. Inna rabbi latiful-lima yasha’. Innahu huwal-‘alimul-hakim.
And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they fell down before him in prostration. He said, “O my dear father, this is the interpretation of my dream from before. My Lord has made it come true. He was good to me when He brought me out of prison and brought you from the desert after Shaytan had caused conflict between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in what He wills. أَفَأَمِنُوٓا۟ أَن تَأْتِيَهُمْ غَـٰشِيَةٌۭ مِّنْ عَذَابِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْ تَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ بَغْتَةًۭ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ ١٠٧
Afa aminu an ta’tiyahum ghashiyatum-min ‘adhabillah aw ta’tiyahumus-sa‘atu baghtatan wa hum la yash‘urun.
Do they feel secure that an overwhelming punishment from Allah will not come to them, or that the Hour will not come upon them suddenly while they do not realize?

Qul hadhihi sabili ad‘u ilallah, ‘ala basiratin ana wa manittaba‘ani. Wa subhanallah, wa ma ana minal-mushrikin.
Say, “This is my way. I call to Allah with clear insight, I and those who follow me. Glory be to Allah, and I am not among those who associate partners with Him.”

وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالًۭا نُّوحِىٓ إِلَيْهِم مِّنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ ۗ أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۗ وَلَدَارُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ خَيْرٌۭ لِّلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوْا۟ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ ١٠٩
Wa ma arsalna min qablika illa rijalan nuhi ilaihim min ahlil-qura. Afalam yasiru fil-ardi fa yanzuru kaifa kana ‘aqibatul-ladhina min qablihim. Wa ladarul-akhirati khairul-lilladhinattaqaw. Afala ta‘qilun.
And We did not send before you except men to whom We revealed, from the people of towns. Have they not travelled through the land and seen how the end of those before them was? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who have taqwa. Will you not reason?

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا ٱسْتَيْـَٔسَ ٱلرُّسُلُ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ كُذِبُوا۟ جَآءَهُمْ نَصْرُنَا فَنُجِّىَ مَن نَّشَآءُ ۖ وَلَا يُرَدُّ بَأْسُنَا عَنِ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ ١١٠
Hatta idhastai’asar-rusulu wa zannu annahum qad kudhibu, ja’ahum nasruna fanajjiya man nasha’. Wa la yuraddu ba’suna ‘anil-qawmil-mujrimin.
Until, when the messengers lost hope and thought they had been denied, Our help came to them. Then whoever We willed was saved, and Our punishment cannot be turned back from the criminal people.

Laqad kana fi qasasihim ‘ibratul-li ulil-albab. Ma kana hadithay-yuftara wa lakin tasdiqal-ladhi baina yadaihi wa tafsila kulli shai’in wa hudaw-wa rahmatal-liqawmin yu’minun.
