The Final Illness
This final chapter covers the Prophet’s ﷺ last days in Madinah with the deepest respect: the beginning of illness, his concern for the Ummah, his stay in the room of Aishah رضي الله عنها, Jibril عليه السلام and the final review of the Qur'an, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه leading the prayer, the Prophet’s ﷺ weakness, his final look at the believers, his last guidance, and his return to Allah.
Where This Chapter Fits
After the Farewell Hajj, the Prophet ﷺ returned to Madinah. The public completion of the message now moved into an intimate final chapter inside Madinah, where worship, love, pain, leadership, and mercy gathered in the last days.
Farewell Hajj
The Prophet ﷺ taught the rites and gave the Ummah its final public guidance.
Final Illness
The Prophet ﷺ gave final reminders, endured severe weakness, and returned to Allah.
The Ummah continues
Revelation was complete, the Sunnah was preserved, and the trust remained with the believers.
The Beginning of the Final Illness
The Prophet ﷺ began to feel severe illness in Madinah. Reports mention headache, fever, and increasing weakness. Even while unwell, his concern remained the prayer, the believers, and the trust of the message.
The final illness was not hidden from human tenderness. The Prophet ﷺ felt pain, asked about prayer, gave instructions, and remained connected to the Ummah until the last moments.
This chapter must be read with adab. It is not only a historical ending. It is the final earthly doorway of the most beloved Messenger ﷺ.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4442; Sahih Muslim 2443; Seerah reportsEvery Soul Returns to Allah
Meaning: “Every soul will taste departing from this world.”
Qur'an 3:185The Prophet’s ﷺ Concern for His Ummah
Even in weakness, the Prophet ﷺ worried about his Ummah. He warned against turning graves into places of worship, protected the purity of tawhid, and gave reminders about prayer and those under people’s care.
His concern was not for himself alone. His heart was with the believers who would live after him, face trials, pray, lead families, carry Islam, and need guidance.
From the beginning of revelation until the final illness, his mercy for the Ummah remained the same river: calling them to Allah, warning them from harm, and wanting salvation for them.
Sahih al-Bukhari 435; Sahih Muslim 531; Sunan Abi Dawud 5156; Musnad Ahmad reportsA Messenger Deeply Concerned for You
Meaning: “What you suffer is hard upon him; he is deeply concerned for you, and to the believers he is gentle and merciful.”
Qur'an 9:128Jibril عليه السلام and the Final Review of Qur'an
Every Ramadan, Jibril عليه السلام reviewed the Qur'an with the Prophet ﷺ. In the final Ramadan, this review happened twice. The Prophet ﷺ understood from this that the final stage of his earthly life was near.
He confided this to Fatimah She wept when he told her what made her heart heavy, then smiled when he gave her glad tidings connected to her closeness to him and her rank among the believing women.
This moment joins revelation, family tenderness, and the nearness of farewell. The Qur'an had been guarded, reviewed, and completed under the care of Allah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3624; Sahih al-Bukhari 6285; Sahih Muslim 2450Allah Preserves the Reminder
Meaning: “Indeed, We sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will preserve it.”
Qur'an 15:9Fatimah رضي الله عنها weeps and smiles
The Prophet ﷺ whispered to Fatimah رضي الله عنها, and she wept. Then he whispered again, and she smiled. Later she explained that he first told her something that made her understand the nearness of his return to Allah, then gave her glad tidings that comforted her.
This is one of the most tender family scenes in the final days.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3624; Sahih Muslim 2450The beloved daughter
Fatimah رضي الله عنها had lived through Makkah, migration, Badr, Uhud, family losses, and the growth of Islam. In this final chapter, she stands as the Prophet’s ﷺ beloved daughter receiving private words of comfort.
Her grief and smile both came from love and trust in Allah’s decree.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6285; biographical reportsIn the Room of Aishah
As the illness became heavier, the Prophet ﷺ asked his wives for permission to be cared for in the room of Aishah They granted permission, and he was moved there.
Reports mention that he was supported between two men, with his feet dragging because of weakness. The one who had carried the Ummah with revelation was now being physically supported by those who loved him.
His final days unfolded in Aishah’s رضي الله عنها room. She served him, held him, narrated the details, and preserved for the Ummah what happened with careful love.
Sahih al-Bukhari 198; Sahih al-Bukhari 4442; Sahih Muslim 418Mercy Between the Believers
Meaning: “Merciful among themselves.”
Qur'an 48:29“Tell Abu Bakr to Lead the Prayer”
As the Prophet’s ﷺ weakness increased, he repeatedly instructed that Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه lead the people in prayer. Aishah رضي الله عنها mentioned Abu Bakr’s soft heart, but the Prophet ﷺ repeated the instruction.
This was a major sign for the Ummah. Prayer could not stop. The community needed leadership in worship, and Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was placed forward by the Messenger ﷺ.
The masjid remained alive with salah, and Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه led while the Prophet ﷺ was too weak to lead regularly.
Sahih al-Bukhari 678; Sahih al-Bukhari 679; Sahih Muslim 418Guard the Prayer
Meaning: “Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer.”
Qur'an 2:238Supported to the prayer
On one occasion, the Prophet ﷺ felt some lightness and came out supported by two men. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was leading the prayer, and when he sensed the Prophet ﷺ, he tried to step back.
The Prophet ﷺ indicated that Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه should remain. The believers saw their Messenger ﷺ praying with them even in weakness, teaching that salah remains the heart of the Ummah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 683; Sahih Muslim 418Too weak to continue leading
As the illness became severe, the Prophet ﷺ could not stand for the regular congregational prayer as before. The command for Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه to lead preserved the order of the community.
The Ummah watched love and leadership together: the Prophet ﷺ near them, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه leading them, and prayer holding them together.
Sahih al-Bukhari 678; Sahih Muslim 418The Curtain Opens
On the final morning, the believers were praying behind Abu Bakr The Prophet ﷺ lifted the curtain of Aishah’s رضي الله عنها room and looked at them as they stood in rows.
His face was described as bright and beautiful, and he smiled. The Companions almost became distracted out of joy, thinking he might come out to them. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه began to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ signalled for them to complete the prayer.
Then he lowered the curtain. This was one of the last sights the believers had of him: the Messenger ﷺ looking at his Ummah in prayer.
Sahih al-Bukhari 680; Sahih Muslim 419The Believers Standing Before Allah
Meaning: “Stand before Allah with devotion.”
Qur'an 2:238Last Public Reminders
In the final days, the Prophet ﷺ gave reminders that protected the Ummah’s foundation. He warned against taking graves as places of worship, emphasised prayer, and reminded people about those under their care.
He also instructed that polytheism should not remain in the Arabian Peninsula, and he gave final guidance connected to delegations and the honouring of guests according to the reports.
These reminders were not random. They protected tawhid, prayer, social responsibility, and the dignity of the Muslim community after him.
Sahih al-Bukhari 435; Sahih Muslim 531; Sahih al-Bukhari 3053; Sahih Muslim 1637; Sunan Abi Dawud 5156Hold Fast to Allah
Meaning: “Hold fast to Allah. He is your Protector.”
Qur'an 22:78Protect worship
The Prophet ﷺ warned against practices that could corrupt pure worship of Allah.
Guard salah
Even in weakness, the prayer of the Ummah remained central.
Care for the vulnerable
His final reminders included responsibility toward those under people’s care.
The Choice of the Highest Companion
Aishah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Prophet ﷺ would say that no prophet is taken until he is shown his place in Paradise and then given a choice.
In his final moments, she heard him say words seeking the Highest Companion. She understood that he had been given the choice and had chosen what is with Allah.
This was not abandonment of the Ummah. It was the completion of his earthly mission and his return to the honour Allah had prepared for him.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4435; Sahih Muslim 2444The Hereafter Is Better and More Lasting
Meaning: “And the Hereafter is better and more lasting.”
Qur'an 87:17In the Arms of Aishah
The Prophet ﷺ returned to Allah in the room of Aishah His head was with her, and she described details of those final moments with reverence and love.
She used a siwak softened for him, and he raised his hand or finger and spoke of the Highest Companion. Then the most honoured soul returned to its Lord.
The final earthly setting was simple: not a palace, not a throne, but the small room of the Mother of the Believers, with revelation complete and the Ummah entrusted to Allah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4449; Sahih al-Bukhari 4438; Sahih Muslim 2444To Allah Is the Return
Meaning: “Indeed, to your Lord is the return.”
Qur'an 96:8The Companions’ Shock
The Companions were shaken by the news. Umar رضي الله عنه was overcome and struggled to accept what had happened. This shows how deeply they loved the Messenger ﷺ.
Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه entered, uncovered the Prophet’s ﷺ face, kissed him, and spoke words of love and truth. Then he came out to the people and recited the verse that Muhammad ﷺ is a Messenger and that messengers before him had also returned to Allah.
The verse steadied the Ummah. The Prophet ﷺ was loved more than anyone, but worship belongs to Allah alone, and Allah is ever-living.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1241; Sahih al-Bukhari 3667; Qur'an 3:144Muhammad ﷺ Is the Messenger
Meaning: “Muhammad is only a Messenger. Messengers have passed on before him.”
Qur'an 3:144The Janazah Prayer
The Muslims prayed Janazah over the Prophet ﷺ with deep reverence. Reports mention that they entered in groups and prayed over him, men first, then women, then children.
No single person stood as imam over the Janazah prayer in the usual way. Scholars explain this as a special honour for the Messenger ﷺ: he is the imam and leader of the Ummah, so no one was placed forward over him in that moment.
This also allowed the believers to come close, group by group, and pray for him with grief, love, and adab before the burial in the room of Aishah
Ibn Sa'd; Al-Bayhaqi; Seerah reports; explanations of the scholarsBurial in the Room of Aishah
The Companions discussed where he should be buried. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه narrated that prophets are buried where they return to Allah.
So the Prophet ﷺ was buried in the room of Aishah رضي الله عنها, the very place where he returned to Allah. The room that held his final moments became the place of his blessed grave.
This was done with reverence, grief, and obedience to the knowledge Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه preserved from the Messenger ﷺ.
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1018; Musnad Ahmad reports; Seerah reportsSalawat and Salam Reach Him ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ was buried in the room of Aishah رضي الله عنها in Madinah, the place where he returned to Allah. That blessed chamber later became enclosed within the area of Masjid an-Nabawi as the mosque expanded through later generations.
His earthly life ended, but his honour with Allah did not end. The life of the Barzakh is from the unseen, and its full reality belongs to Allah. What we affirm is what has come in the reports: the Prophet ﷺ is honoured, salawat and salam from his Ummah reach him, and Allah has appointed angels who convey the greetings of his Ummah to him.
The Prophet ﷺ taught that people should send abundant salawat upon him, and that their salawat reaches him wherever they are. Reports also mention that no one sends salam upon him except that Allah enables him to respond to that salam in the manner Allah wills.
Love for the Prophet ﷺ is not locked in the past. Every salawat is a living connection of faith, adab, gratitude, and obedience.
The Prophet ﷺ is honoured by Allah with the highest station in Jannah, Al-Wasilah, and the Praiseworthy Station, Al-Maqam al-Mahmud. His full rank and nearness are from the unseen, known perfectly to Allah, while the Ummah is taught to ask Allah to grant him Al-Wasilah after every adhan.
Sunan Abi Dawud 2041; Sunan Abi Dawud 2042; Sunan an-Nasa'i 1282; Musnad Ahmad reports; Sahih Muslim 384Send Salawat Upon the Prophet ﷺ
Meaning: “Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and send peace with full submission.”
Qur'an 33:56What the Final Illness Teaches
The final illness teaches that the Prophet ﷺ remained a messenger of mercy until the last breath: worried for the Ummah, guarding prayer, protecting tawhid, caring about the vulnerable, and leaving the believers with clear guidance.
It also teaches that love for the Prophet ﷺ must remain tied to worship of Allah alone. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه steadied the Ummah with Qur'an, reminding them that whoever worships Allah should know that Allah is Ever-Living.
The Seerah closes with grief, but not darkness. The message was complete, the Qur'an preserved, the Sunnah carried, and the Ummah left with the light of revelation.
Dua for Mercy and Firmness
Meaning: “Our Lord, pour patience upon us and take us as Muslims.”
