Pledges of Aqabah
This chapter covers the first openings from Yathrib: how people from the tribes of Aws and Khazraj heard the Prophet ﷺ, accepted Islam, pledged at Aqabah, and prepared the road toward the Hijrah to Madinah.
Where This Chapter Fits
After Isra and Mi'raj, the Prophet ﷺ continued presenting Islam to tribes during pilgrimage seasons. Allah opened hearts from Yathrib when Makkah remained hostile.
Isra and Mi'raj
The Prophet ﷺ was honoured by Allah and the five daily prayers were prescribed.

People from Yathrib listened, believed, and carried the message back to their city.

The pledges prepared a protected community where Islam could be lived openly.
Why Yathrib Was Ready for Change
Yathrib was not an empty page. The city was home to the tribes of Aws and Khazraj, and it had also known conflict and exhaustion. Seerah reports mention that Jewish tribes in the area had knowledge of coming Prophethood and would speak of a coming Prophet.
When some people from Yathrib heard the Prophet ﷺ calling to Allah during the pilgrimage season, the message reached hearts that had already seen the bitterness of tribal fighting. Islam offered what tribal revenge could not offer: worship of Allah alone, brotherhood, moral reform, and a path to unity.
This is how Allah opens doors. Makkah rejected him fiercely, Ta'if rejected him painfully, but hearts from another city began to listen.

The first opening was small, but it carried the seeds of Madinah.
Listening during the pilgrimage season
Seerah reports mention that a small group from Khazraj met the Prophet ﷺ during a pilgrimage season near Aqabah. He presented Islam to them and recited Qur'an. They recognized truth and connected it to what they had heard about a coming Prophet.
They accepted Islam and returned to Yathrib carrying the message. This was quiet, but it was enormous. The message that Quraysh tried to trap in Makkah had now crossed into another city through believing hearts.
Exact names and numbers in some reports should be treated carefully, but the broad Seerah event is clear: the first believers from Yathrib became the beginning of a new chapter.

The next year, more people from Yathrib came and pledged to the Prophet ﷺ. This pledge is often called the First Pledge of Aqabah. It focused on faith, worship, and moral obedience.
Authentic hadith mention a pledge that included not associating anything with Allah, not stealing, not committing unlawful sexual relations, not killing children, not bringing false accusation, and not disobeying in what is right.
This pledge shows that Islam did not build a community only through slogans. It built a moral covenant: tawhid, purity, truthfulness, protection of life, and obedience to Allah.

Meaning: “O Prophet, when believing women come to you pledging that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor commit unlawful sexual relations, nor kill their children, nor bring a slander they invent between their hands and feet, nor disobey you in what is right...”

After the first pledge, the Prophet ﷺ sent Mus'ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه to Yathrib to teach Islam and Qur'an. This was a major step. The city did not only need excitement. It needed knowledge, prayer, Qur'an, and steady teaching.
Mus'ab رضي الله عنه entered Yathrib as a teacher before the Prophet ﷺ migrated there. Through his teaching, Islam spread in homes, hearts, and gatherings. This prepared the city to receive the Messenger ﷺ later.

Seerah reports mention that important people from Aws and Khazraj accepted Islam in this period. As homes changed, the city changed. The future Madinah was being built before the Hijrah itself.
This shows the wisdom of sending a teacher. Victory does not come only from emotion. It needs learning, patience, Qur'an, and people who can carry responsibility.

The second pledge was larger and heavier. It prepared the way for protection, migration, and a new Islamic community.
A pledge of protection
The following year, a larger group from Yathrib met the Prophet ﷺ at Aqabah during the night according to Seerah reports. This pledge is known as the Second Pledge of Aqabah.
This time the pledge was not only about personal morality. It included protecting the Prophet ﷺ if he came to them, supporting him, and standing with him as they would protect their own families. This was a turning point in the Seerah.
The people of Yathrib were not merely becoming private believers. They were preparing to become the Ansar, the helpers of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ.

Seerah reports mention that al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the Prophet’s ﷺ uncle, attended the Second Pledge of Aqabah. At that time, he was concerned that the people of Yathrib understand the seriousness of taking the Prophet ﷺ into their protection.
This detail matters because the pledge was not casual enthusiasm. It meant danger, responsibility, and future conflict with Quraysh. The Ansar had to understand the weight before accepting it.

Seerah reports mention that twelve leaders were appointed from among them to represent and organize their people. This shows that the Hijrah was not an emotional rush. It was guided, structured, and responsible.
Islam was preparing a community, not a crowd. Faith needed leadership, discipline, and trust.

The people of Yathrib who pledged would become known as the Ansar, the Helpers. Their honour was not built on bloodline, wealth, or old status. It was built on sheltering the Prophet ﷺ and supporting the religion of Allah.
The Ansar gave the Muslims more than a city. They gave protection, brotherhood, homes, wealth, and loyalty. In return, Allah gave them an honour that would be recited in the Seerah forever.
This stage is one of the great bridges in the life of the Prophet ﷺ: from Makkan persecution to Madinan community.

وَالَّذِينَ تَبَوَّءُوا الدَّارَ وَالْإِيمَانَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ يُحِبُّونَ مَنْ هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ
Meaning: “And those who settled in the home and faith before them love those who emigrated to them.”

Madinah did not appear from nowhere. Allah prepared it through hearts, teaching, pledges, and responsibility.

His teaching in Yathrib was a key bridge between belief and a ready community.
Do not weaken the pledge
The Second Pledge carried risk and protection. It was the doorstep of Hijrah.
Dua for Truthful Entrance and Exit
رَّبِّ أَدْخِلْنِي مُدْخَلَ صِدْقٍ وَأَخْرِجْنِي مُخْرَجَ صِدْقٍ وَاجْعَل لِّي مِن لَّدُنكَ سُلْطَانًا نَّصِيرًا
Meaning: “My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit, and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.”

The pledges opened the road to Hijrah. After Aqabah, the Muslims could begin moving toward a city prepared to receive them.
Yathrib heard Islam
A small group accepted Islam and carried it back to their people.

Islam spread in Yathrib through teaching, prayer, and household dawah.
The Ansar promised protection
The Second Pledge of Aqabah prepared the way for the Prophet ﷺ and believers to migrate.

The next stage follows the Muslims beginning to leave Makkah and the Qurayshi plot against the Prophet ﷺ.
