Seerah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Khaybar

This chapter covers the expedition of Khaybar after Hudaybiyyah: the fortified oasis, the Prophet’s ﷺ dua on the journey, the banner given to Ali رضي الله عنه, the opening of the forts, the return of Ja'far رضي الله عنه and the Abyssinian migrants, the land arrangement, the poisoned sheep incident, and the doorway to the next household chapter, marriage to Safiyyah رضي الله عنها.

Where This Chapter Fits

After Hudaybiyyah, Quraysh was held back by treaty. The Prophet ﷺ now dealt with Khaybar, a fortified centre north of Madinah that had become a serious source of danger and alliance-building against the Muslims.

Before01

Umm Habibah

The previous chapter connected Abyssinia, the Negus, and the Prophet’s ﷺ household.

This stage02

Khaybar

The Muslims faced a fortified settlement whose politics affected Madinah’s security.

After03

Safiyyah

The next chapter covers her marriage to the Prophet ﷺ with dignity and care.

Why Khaybar Mattered

Khaybar was a fertile and fortified oasis north of Madinah. After earlier conflicts in Madinah and the surrounding region, Khaybar remained a strategic centre with influence, wealth, and strong fortifications.

The expedition came after Hudaybiyyah, when Allah had opened a new phase for the believers. The Muslims were no longer trapped in constant pressure from Quraysh, so threats around Madinah could be addressed more directly.

This chapter should be read as part of Madinah’s security story after Khandaq and Hudaybiyyah, not as an isolated raid.

Seerah reports in Ibn Hisham, Ibn Sa'd, and early Maghazi works

Allah Grants Openings

Meaning: “Allah has promised you much gain that you will take, and He hastened this for you.”

Qur'an 48:20

The Journey and the Prophet’s ﷺ Dua

On the journey, the Companions raised their voices with takbir. The Prophet ﷺ taught them gentleness and reminded them that they were calling upon the One who hears and is near.

Authentic reports also mention the Prophet’s ﷺ dua when approaching a settlement: asking Allah for its good and the good of its people, and seeking refuge from its harm and the harm of its people.

Even in a campaign, the Prophet’s ﷺ heart was attached to Allah, and his tongue taught the believers adab with dua.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2992; Sahih Muslim 2704; Sunan Abi Dawud 2605

Allah Is Near

Meaning: “When My servants ask you about Me, indeed I am near.”

Qur'an 2:186

The Morning at Khaybar

Authentic reports mention that when the Prophet ﷺ came to a people by night, he would not attack until morning. When morning came at Khaybar, the people came out with their tools and saw the Muslim army.

The Prophet ﷺ said words indicating that Allah is Greatest and that Khaybar had become exposed to the Muslim force. The encounter now moved from approach to confrontation.

Khaybar’s forts did not fall in a single instant. The campaign unfolded through fortified positions, pressure, and openings granted by Allah.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2945; Sahih Muslim 1365; Seerah reports

The banner given to Ali

During Khaybar, the Prophet ﷺ said that he would give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, and whom Allah and His Messenger ﷺ love. The Companions longed for that honour.

The Prophet ﷺ gave the banner to Ali ibn Abi Talib Ali رضي الله عنه had an eye ailment, and the Prophet ﷺ treated him by Allah’s permission. He then carried the banner, and Allah granted opening through him.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2942; Sahih Muslim 2406

Call before fighting

The Prophet ﷺ instructed Ali رضي الله عنه to proceed calmly and call them to Islam, telling him that if Allah guided one person through him, it would be better than precious red camels.

This is a crucial Khaybar lesson: even at the edge of battle, guidance mattered more than worldly gain.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2942; Sahih Muslim 2406

Guidance Is Better Than Wealth

Meaning: “And Allah calls to the Home of Peace.”

Qur'an 10:25

The Forts Open

The forts of Khaybar were taken one after another according to the reports. Some positions resisted strongly, and the Muslims faced hardship before Allah granted victory.

The campaign included rules, warnings, and discipline. Authentic reports mention prohibitions connected to certain foods and practices during Khaybar, showing that the Prophet ﷺ was teaching law even in the middle of military events.

Khaybar was not only a battlefield. It became a place where rulings, treaties, property arrangements, and household events entered the Seerah.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4216; Sahih Muslim 1407; Sahih al-Bukhari 4219; Seerah reports

Obey Allah and His Messenger ﷺ

Meaning: “Obey Allah and His Messenger.”

Qur'an 8:1

Returns from Abyssinia

A beautiful moment connected to Khaybar was the return of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه and the Muslims who had been in Abyssinia. They returned after years of exile and rejoined the Prophet ﷺ.

The Prophet ﷺ expressed great joy at Ja'far’s رضي الله عنه return. Reports mention that he said he did not know which made him happier: the opening of Khaybar or the arrival of Ja'far

This moment ties Khaybar to the earlier Abyssinian migration and to the previous chapter about Umm Habibah The scattered threads of the early believers were being gathered back into Madinah.

Seerah reports in Ibn Hisham and Ibn Sa'd; biographical reports

Allah Brings Relief After Exile

Meaning: “Whoever migrates in the way of Allah will find many places of refuge and abundance on earth.”

Qur'an 4:100

The Land Arrangement

After Khaybar was opened, the Prophet ﷺ allowed the people of Khaybar to remain and work the land, with an agreed share of its produce going to the Muslims.

This arrangement shows practical governance after victory. The Prophet ﷺ did not treat the land only as a moment of conquest; he arranged continued cultivation and benefit.

Authentic reports mention this agricultural arrangement and how Khaybar remained a known source of produce in the years that followed.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2328; Sahih Muslim 1551

Justice in Dealings

Meaning: “Fulfil the covenant. Indeed, the covenant will be asked about.”

Qur'an 17:34

The Poisoned Sheep Incident

After Khaybar, a Jewish woman presented poisoned sheep to the Prophet ﷺ. Authentic reports mention that the Prophet ﷺ was informed about it, and some Companions were affected by it.

This incident is serious and should be written without sensational detail. It shows another danger faced by the Prophet ﷺ even after the military confrontation had ended.

The Prophet ﷺ continued his mission under Allah’s protection until Allah completed what He had decreed for him.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2617; Sahih Muslim 2190; Seerah reports

Allah Protects His Messenger ﷺ

Meaning: “And Allah will protect you from the people.”

Qur'an 5:67
Opening01

Khaybar was opened

Allah granted victory after the Muslims faced fortified resistance.

Banner02

The Prophet ﷺ gave him the banner and called before fighting.

Return03

The return of Abyssinian migrants made Khaybar a joyful reunion too.

Safiyyah رضي الله عنها and the Next Chapter

Safiyyah bint Huyayy رضي الله عنها became connected to the events of Khaybar. Her personal story includes loss, captivity, honour, and marriage to the Prophet ﷺ.

Because her story deserves dignity and detail, this page only places the doorway. The next chapter will cover her background, the Prophet’s ﷺ treatment of her, her marriage, and her honour as a Mother of the Believers.

This keeps Khaybar complete while giving Safiyyah رضي الله عنها her own rightful space.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4211; Sahih Muslim 1365; biographical reports

Why Khaybar Matters

Khaybar matters because it came after Hudaybiyyah and showed how quickly Allah’s promise of opening began to unfold. The believers who had returned from Hudaybiyyah without Umrah now saw another door of victory.

It also gathered many threads: Ali رضي الله عنه’s virtue, Ja'far رضي الله عنه’s return, the Abyssinian migrants, property arrangements, warnings in law, the poisoned sheep incident, and the coming marriage to Safiyyah رضي الله عنها.

The chapter teaches that victory is not only the moment a fort opens. It is also what Allah teaches, gathers, heals, and arranges after the fort opens.

Dua for Patience and Firmness

Meaning: “Our Lord, pour patience upon us, make firm our feet, and support us against the disbelieving people.”

Qur'an 2:250
