Change of Qiblah
This chapter covers the change of prayer direction from Bayt al-Maqdis to the Ka'bah, the Prophet’s ﷺ longing, the Qur'anic revelation, the test of obedience, and how this event gave the Ummah a distinct direction in worship.
Where This Chapter Fits
After the adhan and daily worship became visible in Madinah, Allah tested and honoured the believers with a major change in Salah: turning from Bayt al-Maqdis toward the Ka'bah.
Daily worship grew
The adhan gathered the believers, and the masjid became the centre of worship in Madinah.
Qiblah changed
Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ and the believers to face al-Masjid al-Haram in prayer.
Ramadan rulings
The next stage covers Ramadan fasting, zakah, and worship shaping the Madinan community.
The Earlier Direction: Bayt al-Maqdis
When the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah, he prayed facing Bayt al-Maqdis for a period of time. Authentic reports mention around sixteen or seventeen months after arriving in Madinah before the Qiblah was changed.
This earlier direction connected the believers with the long chain of Prophethood and the blessed land connected to many Prophets عليهم السلام. Islam was not a new invention separated from earlier revelation. It was the final message completing the same call to worship Allah alone.
Then Allah commanded the believers to turn toward the Ka'bah, the House connected to Ibrahim and Isma'il عليهما السلام, and the first House established for worship of Allah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 40; Sahih al-Bukhari 399; Sahih Muslim 525The First House for Worship
Meaning: “Indeed, the first House established for mankind was that at Bakkah, blessed and a guidance for the worlds.”
Qur'an 3:96The Prophet’s ﷺ Longing for the Ka'bah
The Qur'an describes the Prophet ﷺ turning his face toward the sky before Allah revealed the command to face al-Masjid al-Haram.
Allah saw the turning of his face
The Prophet ﷺ loved the Ka'bah, the House built by Ibrahim and Isma'il عليهما السلام for the worship of Allah. The Qur'an mentions that Allah saw the turning of the Prophet’s ﷺ face toward the sky.
Then Allah revealed that He would surely turn the Prophet ﷺ to a Qiblah that would please him. This was an honour to the Prophet ﷺ and a defining moment for the Ummah.
The change was not based on personal desire separate from revelation. It came by Allah’s command. The Prophet ﷺ longed, Allah revealed, and the believers obeyed.
Qur'an 2:144; tafsir discussions around the verseAllah Commands the New Qiblah
Meaning: “We have certainly seen the turning of your face toward the sky, so We will surely turn you to a Qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram.”
Qur'an 2:144The Command Reached People During Prayer
Authentic reports mention that some Muslims were praying when news reached them that the Qiblah had changed. They turned during the prayer itself, obeying the command as soon as it reached them.
This scene shows the speed of obedience in the first generation. They did not delay until a committee, a debate, or a convenient moment. When the command of Allah became clear, they turned.
Reports mention this event in connection with Masjid Bani Salimah, later remembered as Masjid al-Qiblatayn, the mosque of the two Qiblahs. The name itself carries the memory of a community turning in obedience.
Sahih al-Bukhari 40; Sahih al-Bukhari 399; Sahih Muslim 525; Seerah reports about Masjid Bani SalimahA test of obedience
The change of Qiblah was a test. Would people follow the Messenger ﷺ by Allah’s command, or would they treat worship as habit and identity without submission?
Allah says He did not make the earlier Qiblah except to know who would follow the Messenger ﷺ from those who would turn back. The Qiblah change revealed hearts.
Qur'an 2:143A distinct Ummah
The Qiblah gave the Muslim community a distinct direction in worship. The believers were connected to Ibrahim عليه السلام and the Ka'bah, while still honouring all Prophets and revelation sent by Allah.
Islam was now visibly standing as the final guidance with its own Qiblah, law, worship rhythm, and community.
Qur'an 2:142-150Why the First Qiblah Was Changed
Meaning: “And We did not make the Qiblah which you used to face except that We might make evident who follows the Messenger from who turns back on his heels.”
Qur'an 2:143What About Earlier Prayers?
Some believers had prayed toward Bayt al-Maqdis before the change. Some had returned to Allah before the new command came. The Companions were concerned about the prayers of those believers.
Allah revealed that He would not cause their faith to be lost. In this verse, “faith” is understood by scholars to include their prayers. This brought comfort: obedience before the new command was accepted, and obedience after the new command was required.
This is a beautiful mercy. Allah does not waste sincere worship done according to the command of its time.
Qur'an 2:143; Sahih al-Bukhari 40; Sahih al-Bukhari 4486Allah Would Not Waste Their Faith
Meaning: “And Allah would never cause your faith to be lost. Indeed, Allah is Kind and Merciful to the people.”
Qur'an 2:143Reactions Around Madinah
The Qur'an mentions that foolish people would ask what turned the believers away from the Qiblah they had been facing. The change exposed objection, confusion, and mockery from some opponents.
Allah taught the believers to answer with a principle: the east and west belong to Allah. Direction itself is not worshipped. Allah is worshipped, and the direction is obeyed because Allah commands it.
This protected the believers from becoming attached to symbols without submission. The Qiblah matters because Allah chose it, not because stones or directions control worship by themselves.
Qur'an 2:142The East and West Belong to Allah
Meaning: “Say, to Allah belong the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path.”
Qur'an 2:142Bayt al-Maqdis
The believers faced Bayt al-Maqdis for a period after Hijrah, by Allah’s command.
Qur'an 2:144
Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ to face al-Masjid al-Haram.
The Ka'bah
The Ummah was given its lasting Qiblah toward the Sacred Mosque in Makkah.
The Middle Nation
In the same passage, Allah describes the Ummah as a middle nation, so that it may be witness over people and the Messenger ﷺ may be witness over the Ummah.
This is not a slogan of superiority without responsibility. It is a burden of guidance, justice, balance, and obedience. The Ummah was being trained to stand between extremes, holding revelation with humility.
The Qiblah change therefore was not only about direction. It was about identity, witness, obedience, and the Ummah’s role in history.
Qur'an 2:143A Middle Nation
Meaning: “And thus We have made you a middle nation so that you may be witnesses over mankind and the Messenger may be a witness over you.”
Qur'an 2:143Everywhere, Face the Sacred Mosque
The command did not apply only to the Prophet ﷺ in one place. Allah repeated that wherever the believers were, they should turn their faces toward al-Masjid al-Haram.
This turned the Ummah into one worshipping body across lands and generations. Different languages, tribes, colours, and places would all face one Qiblah.
The Qiblah became one of the visible signs of Muslim unity. No matter where Muslims live, their prayer turns toward the House that Allah honoured.
Qur'an 2:144; Qur'an 2:149-150Wherever You Are, Face It
Meaning: “And wherever you are, turn your faces toward it.”
Qur'an 2:144Do not make it only geography
The Qiblah change was about obedience, identity, and Allah’s command, not only direction.
Do not belittle Bayt al-Maqdis
The earlier direction was also by Allah’s command and remains a blessed place in Islam.
Do not skip the test
The change revealed who would follow the Messenger ﷺ when a command changed.
Dua for Steadfastness
Meaning: “Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself. Indeed, You are the Bestower.”
Qur'an 3:8What This Stage Led To
The change of Qiblah strengthened the Ummah’s identity and obedience. Soon, Ramadan fasting and zakah would further shape the worship and social life of Madinah.
Prayer faced Bayt al-Maqdis
The believers faced Bayt al-Maqdis for a period after the Hijrah.
Allah revealed Qur'an 2:144
The Prophet ﷺ was commanded to turn toward al-Masjid al-Haram.
The believers turned
Some turned during prayer itself when the command reached them.
