Seerah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Mu'tah and Beloved Companions Returning to Allah

This chapter covers the expedition of Mu'tah, the beloved leaders appointed by the Prophet ﷺ, the return to Allah of Zayd ibn Harithah, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, and Abdullah ibn Rawahah رضي الله عنهم, the leadership of Khalid ibn al-Walid رضي الله عنه, and the Prophet’s ﷺ mercy toward the families left grieving in Madinah.

Where This Chapter Fits

After Umrah al-Qada and the marriage to Maymunah رضي الله عنها, the Seerah moves to a painful but honour-filled expedition far north of Madinah.

Before01

Maymunah

The previous chapter completed the Prophet’s ﷺ marriages in the Seerah timeline.

This stage02

Mu'tah

A distant expedition tested the believers with loss, courage, and leadership.

After03

Conquest of Makkah

The next chapter moves to the great opening of Makkah.

Why Mu'tah Happened

Seerah reports connect Mu'tah to the killing of the Prophet’s ﷺ envoy al-Harith ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه, who had been sent with a message. Harm against an envoy was a serious violation.

The Prophet ﷺ prepared an expedition toward the region of Mu'tah in the north. This was far from Madinah and brought the Muslims near forces connected to the Byzantine sphere.

The campaign was not a familiar local encounter. It carried the weight of distant terrain, a powerful enemy environment, and a mission tied to the honour of the Prophet’s ﷺ message.

Seerah reports in Ibn Hisham, Ibn Sa'd, and early Maghazi works

Stand Firm with Patience

Meaning: “O you who believe, be patient, endure, and remain stationed.”

Qur'an 3:200

The Prophet ﷺ Appoints Three Leaders

The Prophet ﷺ appointed Zayd ibn Harithah رضي الله عنه as commander. If Zayd رضي الله عنه returned to Allah, then Ja'far ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه would lead. If Ja'far رضي الله عنه returned to Allah, then Abdullah ibn Rawahah رضي الله عنه would lead.

This appointment showed Prophetic preparation. The Prophet ﷺ named a chain of command before the army left, so the believers would not fall into confusion if trial struck.

Each of the three leaders had a deep place in the Seerah: Zayd رضي الله عنه was beloved to the Prophet ﷺ, Ja'far رضي الله عنه had returned from Abyssinia, and Abdullah ibn Rawahah رضي الله عنه was among the noble Ansar poets and supporters of Islam.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4261; Sahih al-Bukhari 4262; Seerah reports

Obey Allah and His Messenger ﷺ

Meaning: “Obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute, lest you lose courage.”

Qur'an 8:46
First01

Zayd

The beloved of the Prophet ﷺ carried the banner first.

Second02

Ja'far

The noble migrant of Abyssinia took the banner after Zayd

Third03

Abdullah

Abdullah ibn Rawahah رضي الله عنه then carried the banner with courage.

The Battle and the Banner

At Mu'tah, the Muslims faced a much larger force according to the reports. Zayd ibn Harithah رضي الله عنه carried the banner and fought until he returned to Allah.

Then Ja'far ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه took the banner. Reports mention his great courage and that he continued holding the banner until he too returned to Allah. Allah later honoured him with a special rank, and he became known as Ja'far al-Tayyar.

Then Abdullah ibn Rawahah رضي الله عنه took the banner and fought until he returned to Allah. The chain of command named by the Prophet ﷺ unfolded exactly in the field.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4261; Sahih al-Bukhari 4262; Seerah reports

Do Not Think Them Lost

Meaning: “Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.”

Qur'an 3:169

The Prophet ﷺ Describes the Battle from Madinah

Authentic reports mention that the Prophet ﷺ told the people in Madinah what was happening before news arrived by ordinary travel. He spoke of Zayd رضي الله عنه taking the banner and returning to Allah, then Ja'far رضي الله عنه, then Abdullah ibn Rawahah رضي الله عنه.

The Prophet’s ﷺ eyes were shedding tears as he described the loss of these beloved Companions. This shows Prophetic knowledge by Allah’s permission and Prophetic mercy in grief.

The Messenger ﷺ was not emotionally distant from his Companions. Their pain reached his heart.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4262; Sahih al-Bukhari 1246

Beautiful Patience

Meaning: “So beautiful patience.”

Qur'an 12:18

Takes Command

After the three appointed leaders returned to Allah, the Muslims agreed upon Khalid ibn al-Walid رضي الله عنه as commander. This was still early in his Islam, but Allah granted him steadiness and strategy.

The Prophet ﷺ described him as a sword from the swords of Allah. Under Khalid رضي الله عنه’s leadership, the Muslim army withdrew in an organised way and returned to Madinah.

Mu'tah showed that leadership may pass from one hand to another, but Allah protects the mission when believers remain firm.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4262; Sahih al-Bukhari 3757; Seerah reports

Allah Supports the Believers

Meaning: “If Allah supports you, none can overcome you.”

Qur'an 3:160

Ja'far رضي الله عنه and his family

When Ja'far رضي الله عنه returned to Allah, the Prophet ﷺ showed deep care for his family. Reports mention that he went to them and showed affection to Ja'far’s رضي الله عنه children.

The Prophet ﷺ instructed that food be prepared for the family of Ja'far رضي الله عنه because something had come to them that occupied them. This became a lasting lesson in supporting grieving families.

Sunan Abi Dawud 3132; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 998; Seerah reports

Mercy in grief

The Prophet ﷺ did not allow grief to become empty words only. He turned love into practical care: feed the family, comfort the children, and honour the one who returned to Allah.

This is one of Mu'tah’s quietest but most important lessons for every Muslim home.

Sunan Abi Dawud 3132; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 998

Help One Another in Goodness

Meaning: “Help one another in righteousness and mindfulness of Allah.”

Qur'an 5:2

The Rank of Ja'far

Reports mention that Allah gave Ja'far رضي الله عنه wings in Paradise in place of what he lost while holding the banner. He is remembered with the honourable title Ja'far al-Tayyar.

This honour fits his life: he migrated to Abyssinia, spoke the truth before the Negus, returned to the Prophet ﷺ around Khaybar, and then gave himself at Mu'tah.

His Seerah is a golden thread from Makkah to Abyssinia to Khaybar to Mu'tah.

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3763; biographical reports

Allah Does Not Waste Their Deeds

Meaning: “He will never let their deeds be lost.”

Qur'an 47:4

Why Mu'tah Matters

Mu'tah matters because it shows courage far from home, obedience to Prophetic command, grief handled with mercy, and leadership under pressure.

It also prepared the Muslims psychologically for encounters beyond Arabia. They had now faced forces connected to a major empire and returned with their army preserved through Allah’s help and Khalid رضي الله عنه’s leadership.

Most of all, Mu'tah is remembered through love: Zayd رضي الله عنه, Ja'far رضي الله عنه, and Abdullah ibn Rawahah رضي الله عنه were not only commanders. They were beloved believers whose names still carry fragrance in the Seerah.

Dua for Steadfastness

Meaning: “Our Lord, pour patience upon us, make firm our feet, and support us against the disbelieving people.”

Qur'an 2:250

Keep the leaders named

Zayd, Ja'far, and Abdullah ibn Rawahah رضي الله عنهم are central to this chapter.

Keep grief merciful

The Prophet’s ﷺ care for Ja'far’s رضي الله عنه family is a key lesson.

His leadership preserved the army and earned him the title of a sword from Allah’s swords.

What This Stage Led To

Mu'tah showed the Muslims the scale of wider conflict and the need for strong leadership. The next chapter moves to the Conquest of Makkah.
