Seerah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

How the Qur'an Was Revealed

This chapter explains revelation with depth: the Qur'an as Allah’s speech, Jibril عليه السلام bringing it to the Prophet ﷺ, how revelation came with weight, how the Prophet ﷺ memorized and recited it, how the Companions wrote it, and how verses came into real moments of Seerah.

The Qur'an Came from Allah

Meaning: “And indeed, it is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds. The Trustworthy Spirit brought it down upon your heart, that you may be of the warners, in a clear Arabic tongue.”

Qur'an 26:192-195

Revelation Was Not Just Information

The Qur'an did not come like ordinary speech. It came from Allah, carried by Jibril عليه السلام, received by the heart of the Prophet ﷺ, recited on his tongue, memorized by believers, written by scribes, lived by the Companions, and preserved by Allah for every generation.

When a verse came, it did not land in an empty classroom. It came into a living world: Makkah with its idols, a Prophet ﷺ carrying sorrow and patience, believers hiding their faith, families being tested, migration, battles, treaties, hypocrites, questions, worship, law, and the building of an Ummah.

This is why the Qur'an and Seerah should be studied together. The Seerah shows the moments, and the Qur'an shows Allah’s guidance inside those moments.

How Revelation Came to the Prophet ﷺ

Authentic hadith gives us glimpses of how revelation came. We do not add imaginary details beyond what is reported.

Sometimes like the ringing of a bell

Aishah رضي الله عنها reported that revelation sometimes came like the ringing of a bell, and this was the hardest form upon the Prophet ﷺ. When it left him, he had understood what was revealed.

This shows that revelation carried weight. The Prophet ﷺ did not control it, create it, or choose when it came. He received what Allah sent.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2 and Sahih Muslim 2333

Sometimes Jibril عليه السلام came in human form

The same hadith mentions that sometimes the angel came in the form of a man and spoke to him, and the Prophet ﷺ understood what he said.

This teaches that revelation came in different forms by Allah’s command. The Prophet ﷺ was the receiver of revelation, not its author.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2

A Heavy Word

Meaning: “Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word.”

Qur'an 73:5

Jibril عليه السلام and the Prophet’s ﷺ Memorization

Allah Himself guaranteed that the Qur'an would be gathered in the Prophet’s ﷺ heart and recited correctly.

Allah Would Gather It and Cause It to Be Recited

Meaning: “Do not move your tongue with it to hasten with it. Indeed, upon Us is its collection and its recitation. So when We have recited it, follow its recitation. Then upon Us is its clarification.”

Qur'an 75:16-19

What this means

The Prophet ﷺ was eager to receive the Qur'an correctly. These verses taught him not to rush his tongue out of concern for memorizing it, because Allah Himself would gather it for him and cause him to recite it.

This is one of the strongest foundations for understanding Qur'anic preservation. The preservation began with Allah’s promise to His Messenger ﷺ before it reached the pens of scribes and the hearts of the Companions.

Gradual Revelation

Meaning: “And a Qur'an which We have separated, that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have sent it down progressively.”

Qur'an 17:106

To Strengthen the Heart

Meaning: “Thus, that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly.”

Qur'an 25:32

The Companions Wrote the Qur'an

This is part of the honour of the Companions: Allah used them as means in preserving His Book.

Written during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ

The Qur'an was written during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ. When revelation came, the Prophet ﷺ recited it to the Companions. They memorized it, recited it in prayer, taught it, and scribes wrote it down.

At the same time, the Qur'an was not a modern bound book during his lifetime. The accurate wording is: the Qur'an was revealed, recited, memorized, taught, and written during the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime, then gathered into one compiled mushaf after him, and later standardized for the Ummah.

This protects us from two mistakes: saying the Qur'an was not written until later, or saying the later collection by Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه and standard copies by Uthman رضي الله عنه were unnecessary.

Scribes of revelation

Among the well-known scribes of revelation were Zayd ibn Thabit رضي الله عنه, Ubayy ibn Ka'b رضي الله عنه, Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه, Uthman ibn Affan رضي الله عنه, Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan رضي الله عنه, and others.

The full list differs in historical works, so the careful phrase is “among the scribes.” We should not claim one fixed complete list unless a specific source and method are being used.

Writing materials

The Companions wrote on the materials available in their time: parchment, leather, shoulder bones, palm stalks, flat stones, and other writing surfaces used by the Arabs.

This does not mean the Qur'an was confused. It means the written record existed with the tools of that age, while memorization and recitation were also strong and living in the community.

The Prophet ﷺ Guided the Placement of Verses

The Qur'an came down over years, but the Prophet ﷺ taught the Companions how it was to be recited. When verses came, they were not left as loose words. They were recited, memorized, written, taught, and placed within the recited surahs under Prophetic instruction.

Reports mention that when revelation came, the Prophet ﷺ would call scribes and direct where the verses should be placed. Scholars discuss the chains of some technical reports, so the statement is written carefully: the arrangement of recitation was taught by the Prophet ﷺ and preserved by the Companions, not invented later by guesswork.

From Written Pieces to One Mushaf

The later collection was a protection of what was already revealed, memorized, written, and recited.

Abu Bakr01

The first collection

During the time of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, after many Qur'an reciters were lost at Yamamah, Umar رضي الله عنه urged that the Qur'an be collected. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه appointed Zayd ibn Thabit رضي الله عنه for the task.

Zayd رضي الله عنه described the task as extremely heavy, showing how serious the Companions were.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4986
Uthman02

Standard copies

During the time of Uthman Islam had spread widely. Differences in recitation among people caused concern, so official copies were prepared and sent to different regions.

This was standardization and protection for the Ummah, not a new Qur'an.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4987

Allah Promised Preservation

Meaning: “Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will preserve it.”

Qur'an 15:9

Review with Jibril

The Qur'an was reviewed with Jibril عليه السلام, not merely kept as private memory.

Every Ramadan, and twice in the final year

Authentic hadith mentions that Jibril عليه السلام would review the Qur'an with the Prophet ﷺ every Ramadan. In the final year, he reviewed it twice.

This shows another layer of preservation: revelation came from Allah through Jibril عليه السلام, was received by the Prophet ﷺ, recited to the Companions, written by scribes, memorized by believers, used in prayer, and reviewed annually with Jibril عليه السلام.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4998

Revelation Journey by Parts and Events

This section gives a fuller journey of revelation through the Seerah: what was revealed, where it belongs, what situation surrounded it, and how it shaped the Prophet ﷺ and the believers. Where an exact individual sabab is not established, the page says so clearly instead of inventing a story.

How to Read This Journey

The Qur'an came in living moments. Some parts have a clear hadith report, such as the first verses of Surah al-Alaq and the opening of Surah al-Muddaththir. Some parts are connected to known Seerah events, such as Badr, Uhud, the change of qiblah, the Incident of al-Ifk, Hudaybiyyah, Tabuk, and the Farewell Hajj. Some surahs are known broadly as Makkan or Madinan, but their exact verse-by-verse order is not always fixed by one direct report.

So this table is written as a careful teaching journey. It gives much more than a Makkan/Madinan label, but it still avoids false certainty. It shows the Qur'an moving with the Prophet ﷺ through worship, warning, patience, migration, law, battle, family life, treaty, victory, and final reminders.
