Seerah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

This chapter explains the birth of the final Messenger ﷺ with care: the glad tidings of Ahmad, his noble lineage, his parents, the Year of the Elephant, the date reports, the meaning of Monday, and what is confirmed from Qur'an, hadith, and Seerah reports.

The Glad Tidings Before His Birth

The coming of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was not an accidental event in history. Allah had prepared the world for the final Messenger.

Isa عليه السلام gave glad tidings of Ahmad

Meaning: “And giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad.”

Qur'an 61:6

Why this matters

Before speaking about the birth in Makkah, the Qur'an teaches us that Isa عليه السلام gave glad tidings of a Messenger to come after him named Ahmad. This shows that the coming of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ belongs to the chain of Prophethood, not to an isolated tribal story.

The Prophet ﷺ was born among Quraysh, but his mission was not only for Quraysh. He was sent as the final Messenger, and his coming was part of Allah’s mercy and plan for mankind.

His Noble Lineage and Parents

The family details here are from well-known Seerah reports. They are important because they place the birth in its correct family and historical setting.

Father01

Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib

His father was Abdullah, the son of Abd al-Muttalib. Abdullah belonged to Banu Hashim, a noble clan of Quraysh in Makkah.

Seerah reports mention that Abdullah left this world before the Prophet ﷺ was born. This means the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the world as an orphan from his father’s side.

Mother02

Aminah bint Wahb

His mother was Aminah bint Wahb. She came from Banu Zuhrah, another respected branch of Quraysh.

Through both parents, the Prophet ﷺ had a noble Qurayshi lineage, but his true honour was not only family rank. His greatest honour was that Allah chose him as His final Messenger.

Lineage03

From the line of Ibrahim

The Prophet ﷺ came from the line of Isma'il عليه السلام, the son of Ibrahim عليه السلام. This connects his birth in Makkah to the dua and legacy of Ibrahim عليه السلام.

The full lineage is treated separately in the Family Tree chapter so this page does not become overcrowded.

The Dua of Ibrahim

Meaning: “Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them.”

Qur'an 2:129

The Year of the Elephant

The birth of the Prophet ﷺ is commonly linked in Seerah reports to the Year of the Elephant. The Qur'an mentions the event itself in Surah al-Fil.

What happened before the birth

In the same general period, Abraha came with an army intending to attack the Ka'bah. His army included elephants, which is why the year became known as the Year of the Elephant.

Allah protected the Ka'bah and destroyed the army. This event showed that the House of Allah was protected by Allah, not by the strength of Quraysh. Soon after, the final Messenger ﷺ was born in Makkah, the city of the Sacred House.

What we should and should not claim

The Qur'an confirms the event of the people of the elephant in Surah al-Fil. Seerah reports connect the Prophet’s ﷺ birth to that year.

So we write carefully: the birth is commonly placed in the Year of the Elephant according to Seerah reports. The Qur'an proves the event of the elephant, while Seerah reports provide the historical link to the birth year.

Surah al-Fil

Meaning: “Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant? Did He not make their plan go astray? And He sent against them birds in flocks...”

Qur'an 105:1-3

Date, Year, and Place of Birth

This is where many mistakes happen. We must separate what is authentically reported from what is historically common but disputed.

Day01

Born on a Monday

The strongest point about the day is that the Prophet ﷺ was born on a Monday. In Sahih Muslim, when asked about fasting on Monday, he said it was the day he was born and the day revelation came to him.

This is the safest day-related detail because it is supported by authentic hadith.

Year02

The Year of the Elephant

Seerah reports commonly place his birth in the Year of the Elephant. Using common historical conversion, this is often estimated around 570 CE or 571 CE.

Since exact conversion to the CE calendar is historical estimation, this page writes “around 570 CE” and does not force one exact year.

Month03

Rabi' al-Awwal

Seerah reports commonly mention the month of Rabi' al-Awwal. The exact date within the month is not established by a clear authentic hadith.

The date 12 Rabi' al-Awwal is widely mentioned in later historical works, but it should not be presented as certain.

Born in Makkah

The Prophet ﷺ was born in Makkah, the city of the Ka'bah. This matters because Makkah was already tied to Ibrahim عليه السلام, Isma'il عليه السلام, the Sacred House, and the dua for a Messenger from among them.

The city that had been protected in the Year of the Elephant became the birthplace of the one who would restore the worship of Allah alone and cleanse the Ka'bah from idols years later.

Why the exact date is handled carefully

Many Muslims know the date 12 Rabi' al-Awwal because it is widely repeated. But popularity is not the same as proof. Scholars and historians differed over the exact date.

For a Seerah teaching page, the honest wording is: born on Monday, in the Year of the Elephant, in Makkah, commonly reported in Rabi' al-Awwal, around 570 CE. The exact day of the month is not stated as certain.

The Meaning of His Birth

The birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the beginning of the final chapter of Prophethood on earth. At that moment, the people of Makkah did not yet know that the child born among them would one day call them away from idols, restore tawhid, teach the Qur'an, and become mercy for the worlds.

He was born without his father alive to protect him. This was not weakness in Allah’s plan. Allah Himself would protect, raise, teach, and honour him. From the beginning, the Seerah shows that the Messenger ﷺ was not carried by worldly power. He was carried by Allah’s care.

Mercy for the Worlds

Meaning: “And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.”

Qur'an 21:107

Important Care in This Chapter

Because this is a sensitive topic, the page avoids claims that are famous but not strongly established.

No unsupported birth stories

Some books mention extraordinary signs around the birth. This page does not build the chapter on reports whose strength is disputed or unclear.

Sources are separated

Qur'an is cited as Qur'an. Hadith is cited with hadith references. Historical details are named as Seerah reports, not presented as Qur'an or hadith.

Exact date is not forced

The date 12 Rabi' al-Awwal is mentioned only as a widely reported historical view, not as a confirmed hadith fact.

Dua for Beneficial Knowledge

Meaning: “My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”

Qur'an 20:114

What This Stage Leads To

The next part of the Seerah follows the care and early childhood of the Prophet ﷺ.

After birth

Early care and nursing

The Prophet ﷺ was first cared for in Makkah, then nursed in the desert according to the custom of noble Arab families. This will be covered in the next chapter with sources and careful wording.

Next

Childhood and Early Care

The next chapter covers Thuwaybah, Halimah al-Sa'diyah, the desert years, the opening of the chest, and the early family care of the Prophet ﷺ.
