Women Mentioned in the Qur'an

Maryam

Maryam bint Imran عليها السلام, chosen by Allah, purified, raised in worship, honoured as the mother of Isa عليه السلام, and the only woman mentioned by name in the Qur'an. Her story is one of sincerity, modesty, worship, patience, and Allah’s power.

Name01

Maryam bint Imran

She was Maryam bint Imran عليها السلام. Allah mentioned her by name in the Qur'an and named an entire surah after her.

Rank02

Chosen and purified

The angels told Maryam عليها السلام that Allah chose her, purified her, and chose her above the women of the worlds.

Miracle03

Mother of Isa

Allah created Isa عليه السلام without a father as a sign of His power. Maryam عليها السلام remained pure and truthful.

Her family and the vow of her mother

Maryam عليها السلام came from the family of Imran, a family honoured in the Qur'an. Her mother made a sincere vow before Maryam was born, dedicating the child in her womb for the service of Allah.

When Maryam عليها السلام was born, her mother recognised that the child was a girl and still placed her trust in Allah. She named her Maryam and sought Allah’s protection for her and her offspring from Shaytan.

This beginning is important. Maryam’s story starts before her birth with a mother’s sincere intention, du'a, and dedication to Allah. Her greatness was not built on public status, but on a home where Allah was remembered.

Qur'an 3:33-36; Tafsir Ibn Kathir; Tafsir at-Tabari

The du'a of Maryam’s mother

Meaning: “I have named her Maryam, and I seek Your protection for her and her offspring from Shaytan, the expelled.”

Qur'an 3:36

Allah accepted her beautifully

Allah says that He accepted Maryam عليها السلام with a beautiful acceptance and caused her to grow in a beautiful way. This is a deep honour. Allah did not reject the vow because the child was a girl. Instead, He raised Maryam عليها السلام in purity and worship.

Zakariyya عليه السلام became responsible for her care. Whenever he entered her prayer chamber, he found provision with her. When he asked where it came from, she said that it was from Allah, and that Allah provides for whom He wills without measure.

This moment teaches tawakkul, purity, and Allah’s generosity. Maryam عليها السلام was young, but her answer carried certainty in Allah.

Qur'an 3:37; Tafsir Ibn Kathir; Tafsir at-Tabari

Provision from Allah

Meaning: “It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without measure.”

Qur'an 3:37

Zakariyya عليه السلام and the lesson of hope

When Zakariyya عليه السلام saw the provision Allah gave Maryam عليها السلام, he turned to Allah and made du'a for a righteous child, even though he was old and his wife had not been able to have children.

This connection is beautiful: Allah’s care for Maryam عليها السلام opened a door of hope for Zakariyya عليه السلام. Seeing Allah’s generosity to her reminded him that nothing is difficult for Allah.

Maryam’s story therefore becomes connected to the story of Yahya عليه السلام. A righteous woman’s sign of provision became a reason for a prophet to increase in hope and du'a.

Qur'an 3:38-41; Qur'an 19:2-15

Chosen above the women of the worlds

The angels told Maryam عليها السلام that Allah had chosen her, purified her, and chosen her above the women of the worlds. They also commanded her to be devout, prostrate, and bow with those who bow.

This honour was joined with worship. Allah did not only praise her lineage or miracle. He praised her purity, truthfulness, devotion, and obedience.

Her rank is also confirmed in authentic hadith. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned Maryam عليها السلام among the greatest women, and authentic reports compare her excellence with the excellence of other righteous women such as Khadijah رضي الله عنها, Asiyah رضي الله عنها, and Fatimah رضي الله عنها.

Qur'an 3:42-43; Sahih al-Bukhari 3432; Sahih Muslim 2430; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3878

Allah chose Maryam

Meaning: “O Maryam, indeed Allah has chosen you, purified you, and chosen you above the women of the worlds.”

Qur'an 3:42

The good news of Isa

The angels gave Maryam عليها السلام glad tidings of a word from Allah: Isa al-Masih عليه السلام. They told her that he would be honoured in this world and the Hereafter, among those brought near to Allah, and that he would speak to people in the cradle and in maturity.

Maryam عليها السلام asked how she could have a child when no man had touched her. The answer was clear: Allah creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says “Be,” and it is.

This is the heart of the miracle. Isa عليه السلام was born without a father by Allah’s command. This does not make him divine. It shows Allah’s power, just as Adam عليه السلام was created without father or mother.

Qur'an 3:45-47; Qur'an 3:59; Qur'an 19:16-21

Allah creates what He wills

Meaning: “When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.”

Qur'an 3:47

The angel comes to her in seclusion

Surah Maryam describes Maryam عليها السلام withdrawing from her people to an eastern place. Allah sent His angel to her, appearing in the form of a well-proportioned man.

Her first response showed her purity and fear of Allah. She said that she sought refuge in the Most Merciful from him if he feared Allah. This is one of the strongest examples of modesty and taqwa in the Qur'an.

The angel told her that he was only a messenger from her Lord, sent to grant her a pure son. The miracle came by Allah’s command, not through any human cause.

Qur'an 19:16-21; Tafsir Ibn Kathir; Tafsir at-Tabari

Maryam’s purity and taqwa

Meaning: “She said, ‘Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, if you fear Allah.’”

Qur'an 19:18

The birth of Isa

Maryam عليها السلام withdrew to a distant place. The pains of childbirth brought her to the trunk of a palm tree, and in that intense moment she expressed deep distress. The Qur'an does not hide her pain. It shows her as a human being tested with fear, labour, isolation, and the weight of what people would say.

Allah comforted her. She was told not to grieve, that Allah had placed a stream beneath her, and that she should shake the trunk of the palm tree so fresh dates would fall for her.

This moment teaches both miracle and effort. Allah could have sent the dates without any movement, yet she was told to shake the trunk. The believer trusts Allah and still takes the means available.

Qur'an 19:22-26; Tafsir Ibn Kathir; Tafsir at-Tabari

Do not grieve

Meaning: “Then he called her from below her: Do not grieve.”

Qur'an 19:24

Silence, patience, and returning to her people

Maryam عليها السلام was commanded to eat, drink, cool her eyes, and remain silent from speaking to people. This was not weakness. It was obedience. Allah would defend her in a way no human argument could match.

When she returned carrying Isa عليه السلام, her people were shocked and accused her with terrible words. She did not argue. She pointed to the child, following Allah’s instruction.

This teaches that sometimes the believer’s defence is not long speech. Sometimes Allah opens a defence through patience, obedience, and truth appearing by His command.

Qur'an 19:26-29; Tafsir Ibn Kathir; Tafsir at-Tabari

Isa عليه السلام speaks in the cradle

By Allah’s permission, Isa عليه السلام spoke as an infant. He declared himself the servant of Allah, said that Allah had given him the Scripture and made him a prophet, and mentioned prayer, charity, and kindness to his mother.

His first words defended Maryam عليها السلام and corrected false beliefs before they could take root. He did not say he was divine. He said, “I am the servant of Allah.”

This cradle speech is one of the great signs of Allah. It honoured Maryam عليها السلام, proved her innocence, and declared the true status of Isa عليه السلام.

Qur'an 19:30-33; Qur'an 5:110

Meaning: “He said, ‘Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.’”

Qur'an 19:30

Maryam عليها السلام in Surah at-Tahrim

Allah gives Maryam عليها السلام as an example for the believers. The Qur'an says she guarded her chastity, Allah breathed into her through His command, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures. She was among the devoutly obedient.

This is very important: Maryam عليها السلام is not presented only as an example for women. She is an example for all believers. Her sincerity, chastity, truthfulness, and obedience are Qur'anic standards for the Ummah.

Her honour in Islam is therefore not symbolic only. It is theological, spiritual, and moral.

Qur'an 66:12; Tafsir Ibn Kathir; Tafsir at-Tabari

An example for believers

Meaning: “And Maryam, the daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity...”

Qur'an 66:12

She was truthful

The Qur'an calls Maryam عليها السلام a siddiqah, a woman of complete truthfulness. This title is a great honour. It confirms her purity, honesty, and high rank.

Islam rejects every accusation against her. Her honour is protected in revelation.

Qur'an 5:75; Qur'an 4:156

Isa عليه السلام is not divine

The Qur'an honours Maryam عليها السلام and Isa عليه السلام while clearly rejecting exaggeration. Isa عليه السلام is a messenger of Allah, born miraculously by Allah’s command.

The miracle of his birth proves Allah’s power, not divinity for creation.

Qur'an 5:72-75; Qur'an 4:171; Qur'an 3:59

Maryam عليها السلام in authentic hadith

The Prophet ﷺ praised Maryam عليها السلام among the greatest women. Authentic reports mention that many men reached completion, but among women, Maryam bint Imran and Asiyah, the wife of Fir'awn, are named with special virtue. Other authentic reports mention Maryam, Khadijah, Asiyah, and Fatimah رضي الله عنهن among the best women.

The Prophet ﷺ also mentioned that Maryam عليها السلام and her son were protected from the touch of Shaytan at birth, connected to the du'a of Maryam’s mother in Qur'an 3:36.

These hadith must be taught as honour, not competition. Allah gives each righteous woman her own rank and station.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3432; Sahih Muslim 2431; Sahih Muslim 2366; Sahih al-Bukhari 4548; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3878

Dua for protection from Shaytan

Meaning: “I seek Your protection for her and her offspring from Shaytan, the expelled.”

Qur'an 3:36

Reports that need careful wording

Maryam عليها السلام is honoured in the Qur'an and Sunnah, so her story should not be filled with invented scenes, dramatic dialogue, or details taken from unreliable storytelling. The Qur'an gives enough guidance and beauty.

Some tafsir reports mention details about her family, the mihrab, provision, and the birth setting. These may be useful when reported by scholars, but they should not be treated like Qur'an or authentic hadith unless clearly established.

The safe teaching is to keep the Qur'anic account central: her mother’s vow, Allah’s acceptance, Zakariyya’s care, her worship, the glad tidings, the miraculous birth, the defence through Isa عليه السلام, and her rank as a truthful, devout servant of Allah.

What her story teaches

Maryam عليها السلام teaches sincerity before recognition, worship before honour, and patience before Allah’s defence arrives. She was chosen by Allah, but her life still included isolation, fear, pain, and accusation.

Her story teaches modesty, chastity, trust in Allah, and obedience when speaking would not help. It also teaches that Allah can defend His servants in ways they could never plan.

For Muslim families, her story also teaches the power of a mother’s du'a and intention. The wife of Imran dedicated her child to Allah, and Allah raised Maryam عليها السلام as a sign for the worlds.
