Aishah رضي الله عنها
The beloved wife of the Prophet ﷺ, daughter of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, a Mother of the Believers, a great scholar, narrator of hadith, teacher of the Ummah, and a woman whose honour was defended by revelation.
Aishah bint Abi Bakr
She was Aishah bint Abi Bakr as-Siddiq رضي الله عنهما, from the noble household of the closest Companion of the Prophet ﷺ.
Mother of the Believers
Allah honoured the wives of the Prophet ﷺ as Mothers of the Believers, and Aishah رضي الله عنها held a special place among them.
Teacher of the Ummah
She narrated more than two thousand hadith and became a major source of knowledge in Qur'an, Sunnah, fiqh, worship, family life, and manners.
Her family and early home
Aishah رضي الله عنها was the daughter of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq رضي الله عنه, the closest Companion of the Prophet ﷺ, and Umm Ruman رضي الله عنها, a righteous believing woman. She grew up in a home that accepted Islam early and supported the Prophet ﷺ when the message was still weak in the eyes of people.
Her father Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was known for truthfulness, generosity, firmness upon faith, and sacrifice. This means Aishah رضي الله عنها was raised in a house where Islam was not a decoration; it was loyalty, hardship, and service to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
She was from Quraysh and from the clan of Taym through her father. Her family was deeply connected to the earliest Makkan period of Islam and later to Hijrah, Madinah, and the leadership of the Ummah.
Sahih al-Bukhari; Sahih Muslim; Ibn Sa'd; Ibn Hajar; Ibn Abd al-BarrThe wives of the Prophet ﷺ are Mothers of the Believers
النَّبِيُّ أَوْلَىٰ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ ۖ وَأَزْوَاجُهُ أُمَّهَاتُهُمْ
Meaning: “The Prophet is closer to the believers than themselves, and his wives are their mothers.”
Qur'an 33:6The Prophet’s ﷺ dream and the marriage
Aishah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Prophet ﷺ was shown her in a dream before marriage. An angel brought her image wrapped in silk, and it was said that she would be his wife. The Prophet ﷺ said that if this was from Allah, He would bring it about.
This marriage was not a random personal choice. It happened by Allah’s decree and connected the Prophet ﷺ with the household of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, the man who would stand beside him in Hijrah and later lead the Ummah after the Prophet ﷺ returned to Allah.
Authentic reports mention her young age at marriage. This matter should be taught with adab, not with modern mockery and not with embarrassment about authentic texts. The marriage happened in its historical setting, with the approval of families and society, and Allah honoured Aishah رضي الله عنها with a rank no insult can remove.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3895; Sahih Muslim 2438; Sahih al-Bukhari 5133; Sahih Muslim 1422Moving to the Prophet’s ﷺ home in Madinah
After the Hijrah to Madinah, Aishah رضي الله عنها entered the Prophet’s ﷺ household. Her room was beside the masjid, simple and close to the centre of worship, revelation, teaching, and community life.
Her home was not a palace. It was a small, blessed room where the Prophet ﷺ lived with simplicity, prayed, received revelation, taught the Ummah, and returned to Allah years later.
In that home, Aishah رضي الله عنها saw details of the Prophet’s ﷺ worship, manners, private life, kindness, family conduct, night prayer, fasting, generosity, and mercy that others could not see. This is one reason Allah made her a major teacher for the Ummah.
Sahih al-Bukhari; Sahih Muslim; Seerah reportsRevelation and wisdom in the Prophet’s ﷺ homes
وَاذْكُرْنَ مَا يُتْلَىٰ فِي بُيُوتِكُنَّ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَالْحِكْمَةِ
Meaning: “Remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allah and wisdom.”
Qur'an 33:34The Prophet’s ﷺ love for her
Amr ibn al-As رضي الله عنه asked the Prophet ﷺ who was the most beloved person to him. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Aishah.” When he asked from among men, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Her father.”
This authentic report shows her special place in the Prophet’s ﷺ heart and the closeness of her father Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3662; Sahih Muslim 2384Her virtue over women
The Prophet ﷺ said that the virtue of Aishah رضي الله عنها over women is like the virtue of tharid over other foods. Tharid was considered a prized and complete food among the Arabs.
This hadith points to her excellence, not merely affection. She had knowledge, intelligence, devotion, and a special rank.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3411; Sahih Muslim 2431Her knowledge and memory
Aishah رضي الله عنها became one of the greatest scholars of the Companions. She narrated more than two thousand hadith, and many rulings of worship, purity, family life, inheritance, manners, medicine, and the private Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ were preserved through her.
Senior Companions and later students would ask her questions. She corrected misunderstandings, explained meanings, and gave legal answers. Her knowledge was not limited to memory; she understood, reasoned, compared reports, and taught with clarity.
Her students included major early scholars such as Urwah ibn az-Zubayr, al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, Masruq, Amrah bint Abd ar-Rahman, and others. Through them, her knowledge spread into the fiqh and hadith tradition of the Ummah.
Sahih al-Bukhari; Sahih Muslim; Musnad Ahmad; Sunan collections; Ibn Hajar; adh-DhahabiDua for knowledge
رَّبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا
Meaning: “My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
Qur'an 20:114Revelation came while he ﷺ was with her
Aishah رضي الله عنها had a special honour: revelation came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was with her under one cover, and he mentioned that this did not happen in the same way with another wife.
This should not be used to lower the honour of the other Mothers of the Believers. Each had her own rank and virtues. But it does show the special place Allah gave Aishah رضي الله عنها in the Prophet’s ﷺ life.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3775; Sahih al-Bukhari 2581The story of tayammum and the lost necklace
On one journey, Aishah رضي الله عنها lost a necklace. The Prophet ﷺ and the Companions stopped to search for it, and they had no water with them. When the time of prayer came, Allah revealed the ruling of tayammum, allowing purification with clean earth when water is unavailable or cannot be used.
Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه said to the family of Abu Bakr that this was not their first blessing. The incident shows how Allah brought ease to the Ummah through an event connected to Aishah رضي الله عنها.
This is not a minor household story. It became part of Islamic law for every generation.
Sahih al-Bukhari 334; Sahih Muslim 367; Qur'an 4:43; Qur'an 5:6The ruling of tayammum
فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا
Meaning: “And you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth.”
Qur'an 5:6The incident of the slander
One of the greatest tests in the life of Aishah رضي الله عنها was the incident of the slander, known as al-Ifk. It happened after a journey, when hypocrites and others spread a false accusation against her.
Aishah رضي الله عنها suffered deeply from the accusation. The Prophet ﷺ, her parents, and the believers went through a painful period until Allah revealed verses declaring her innocence. The Qur'an defended her honour, exposed the seriousness of spreading such speech, and taught the Ummah how to behave when rumours appear.
This story must be taught with full adab. Allah cleared her from above the heavens. No Muslim should repeat the accusation, soften it, treat it like gossip, or speak of her except with honour.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4141; Sahih Muslim 2770; Qur'an 24:11-26Allah declared her innocence
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ جَاءُوا بِالْإِفْكِ عُصْبَةٌ مِّنكُمْ
Meaning: “Indeed, those who came with the falsehood are a group among you.”
Qur'an 24:11How believers should respond
لَّوْلَا إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ ظَنَّ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بِأَنفُسِهِمْ خَيْرًا
Meaning: “Why, when you heard it, did the believing men and believing women not think good of one another?”
Qur'an 24:12Do not treat rumours lightly
وَتَحْسَبُونَهُ هَيِّنًا وَهُوَ عِندَ اللَّهِ عَظِيمٌ
Meaning: “You thought it was insignificant, while with Allah it was tremendous.”
Qur'an 24:15Lessons from the incident of al-Ifk
The incident of al-Ifk teaches that the honour of a believer is sacred. Islam does not allow careless speech, suspicion, gossip, forwarding rumours, or enjoying scandal.
It also teaches that Allah may test His beloved servants and then raise them through the test. Aishah رضي الله عنها was not only cleared privately; Qur'an was revealed and recited until the Last Day defending her honour.
Any page about Aishah رضي الله عنها must keep this central: her innocence is Qur'anic truth, and attacking her honour is not a small matter.
Qur'an 24:11-26; Sahih al-Bukhari 4141; Sahih Muslim 2770Her worship and home life
Aishah رضي الله عنها narrated many details about the Prophet’s ﷺ worship at home: his night prayer, fasting, recitation, kindness, cleanliness, ghusl, siwak, and how he lived with his family.
She was asked about the character of the Prophet ﷺ and said that his character was the Qur'an. This short answer contains a whole ocean of meaning: the Prophet ﷺ lived the guidance of Allah in worship, mercy, patience, justice, modesty, and truthfulness.
Because of Aishah رضي الله عنها, the Ummah knows many private Sunnah details that could not have been preserved by public observation.
Sahih Muslim 746; Musnad Ahmad; Sunan Abi Dawud; Sunan an-Nasa'iThe Prophet’s ﷺ character
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
Meaning: “And indeed, you are upon a great character.”
Qur'an 68:4Her generosity and simple living
Aishah رضي الله عنها lived with simplicity. Reports mention that food was sometimes scarce in the houses of the Prophet ﷺ, and months could pass with no fire lit for cooking, while the family lived on dates and water.
She was also generous. Later reports mention that wealth would come to her and she would give much of it away. This matches the character of the Prophetic household: the world entered their hands, but not their hearts.
Her life teaches that knowledge and worship must be joined with detachment from display and concern for others.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6459; Sahih Muslim 2972; Ibn Sa'd; biographical reportsThe Prophet ﷺ returned to Allah in her room
In the final illness, the Prophet ﷺ asked his wives for permission to be nursed in the room of Aishah رضي الله عنها, and they allowed it. He spent his final days in her room.
Aishah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Prophet ﷺ returned to Allah while leaning against her, and that Allah joined her saliva with his saliva when her brother Abd ar-Rahman رضي الله عنه entered with a siwak and she softened it for the Prophet ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ was buried in her room in Madinah. This room later became enclosed within Masjid an-Nabawi. This is among the clearest signs of the honour Allah gave her home.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4449; Sahih al-Bukhari 4450; Sahih Muslim 2443; Seerah reportsHer life after the Prophet ﷺ
After the Prophet ﷺ returned to Allah, Aishah رضي الله عنها became one of the most important teachers in Madinah. People came to her for hadith, fatwa, explanation, family rulings, worship questions, and details of the Prophet’s ﷺ private Sunnah.
She lived through the caliphates after the Prophet ﷺ and remained a reference point for knowledge. Her home became a school without needing banners or institutions: students came, asked, memorised, and carried her knowledge forward.
She returned to Allah in Madinah in 58 AH according to the well-known report, during the time of Mu'awiyah رضي الله عنه. Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه led her janazah prayer, and she was buried in al-Baqi'.
Ibn Sa'd; Ibn Hajar; adh-Dhahabi; biographical reportsReports that need careful wording
Aishah رضي الله عنها is often discussed in polemics, especially around her age at marriage and later historical events. A teaching page should not become a debate page, but it also should not hide authentic reports.
The age reports are found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. They are part of the hadith record and should be presented respectfully, with historical context and without importing modern insults into the Seerah.
Later political events, including the Battle of the Camel, must be handled in a separate careful lesson if covered. The Companions are to be spoken about with justice and restraint. This page focuses on her rank, knowledge, virtues, Qur'anic honour, and service to the Ummah.
