Umm Haram رضي الله عنها
Umm Haram bint Milhan رضي الله عنها, a noble Ansari Companion from the family of Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه, honoured by the Prophet ﷺ visiting her home and by glad tidings connected to the first Muslim naval expedition.
Umm Haram bint Milhan
She was Umm Haram bint Milhan رضي الله عنها, from the Ansar of Madinah and from a household known for service and sacrifice.
Connected to Anas رضي الله عنه
She was from the family of Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه, and authentic reports describe the Prophet ﷺ visiting her household.
Glad tidings by sea
The Prophet ﷺ foretold people from his Ummah riding the sea for Allah’s cause, and Umm Haram رضي الله عنها asked to be among them.
Her family background
Umm Haram رضي الله عنها was Umm Haram bint Milhan, from Banu Najjar of the Ansar in Madinah. She was the sister of Umm Sulaym رضي الله عنها according to well-known biographical reports, and therefore connected to the family of Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه.
Her family included people of sacrifice. Her brother Haram ibn Milhan رضي الله عنه is remembered in the reports of Bi'r Ma'unah, where many reciters and Companions were harmed treacherously.
This background matters because Umm Haram رضي الله عنها came from a household that gave people, service, courage, and loyalty to Islam.

Qur'an 59:9The Prophet ﷺ visited her home
Authentic hadith mention that the Prophet ﷺ used to enter upon Umm Haram bint Milhan رضي الله عنها and that she would provide food for him. The narrations show a special household connection and trust.
Scholars discuss the family relationship and explain this in a way that preserves the adab and rulings of the Prophet’s ﷺ household interactions. It should not be written casually or without scholarly care.
The important teaching point is that Umm Haram رضي الله عنها was from a trusted Ansari household honoured by the Prophet’s ﷺ visit and du'a.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2788; Sahih Muslim 1912; hadith explanation by scholarsThe dream of the sea expedition
One day, the Prophet ﷺ slept in her home and woke smiling. Umm Haram رضي الله عنها asked what made him smile. He said that some people from his Ummah had been shown to him riding on the sea like kings on thrones.
She asked the Prophet ﷺ to supplicate that Allah make her among them. He supplicated for her. Later he slept again and saw another group. She asked again, and he told her that she would be among the first group.
This authentic report is one of the clearest virtues of Umm Haram رضي الله عنها. It connects her to a future generation of Muslims who would travel by sea in Allah’s cause.

Umm Haram رضي الله عنها was married to Ubadah ibn as-Samit رضي الله عنه, a noble Ansari Companion who witnessed major events and was among those who pledged to the Prophet ﷺ.
During the caliphate of Uthman ibn Affan رضي الله عنه, Ubadah رضي الله عنه joined the first Muslim naval expedition toward Cyprus, and Umm Haram رضي الله عنها went with him.
This journey fulfilled the glad tidings she had received from the Prophet ﷺ years earlier.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2788; Sahih Muslim 1912; Ibn Hajar; Seerah and history reportsThe first Muslim naval expedition
The first major Muslim naval expedition is reported during the time of Uthman رضي الله عنه, under the leadership connected to Mu'awiyah رضي الله عنه in the region of ash-Sham. The expedition travelled toward Cyprus.
Umm Haram رضي الله عنها was among those who went by sea. After landing, she fell from her riding animal and returned to Allah. She was buried there, and her grave became known historically in Cyprus.
This should be taught with dignity: she lived to see the Prophet’s ﷺ glad tidings come true and returned to Allah after joining the first group foretold in the authentic hadith.
