Female Companions رضي الله عنهن

Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها

Barakah bint Tha'labah رضي الله عنها, the beloved caretaker of the Prophet ﷺ from childhood, a woman he honoured as part of his family, a migrant for Allah, the mother of Usamah ibn Zayd رضي الله عنهما, and a Companion remembered for loyalty, faith, and tears of love for revelation.

Name01

Barakah bint Tha'labah

Her name was Barakah bint Tha'labah رضي الله عنها, and she became famous by her kunyah: Umm Ayman.

Honour02

From the Prophet’s ﷺ household

The Prophet ﷺ honoured her and is reported to have said that she was like a mother to him after his mother.

Family03

Mother of Usamah رضي الله عنه

She married Zayd ibn Harithah رضي الله عنه and became the mother of Usamah ibn Zayd رضي الله عنهما.

Her early connection to the Prophet ﷺ

Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها was connected to the household of the Prophet ﷺ from his earliest years. She had served in the household of his father Abdullah and mother Aminah, then remained close to the Prophet ﷺ after he lost his parents in childhood.

When the Prophet ﷺ was young, Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها cared for him with tenderness and loyalty. She was not a passing figure in his life. She was part of the small circle that knew him before prophethood, before public fame, and before people gathered around him.

Because of this, her story has a special warmth. She reminds us that Allah placed caring people around the Prophet ﷺ during his childhood, and that service done with sincerity may be honoured for generations.

Ibn Sa'd; Ibn Hajar; Ibn Abd al-Barr; Seerah reports

Allah cared for the Prophet ﷺ

أَلَمْ يَجِدْكَ يَتِيمًا فَآوَىٰ

Meaning: “Did He not find you an orphan and shelter you?”

Qur'an 93:6

Her name: Barakah

Her personal name was Barakah, meaning blessing. This name fits her story beautifully, but the page should still teach with evidence, not only emotion.

She is known in the books of Seerah and biography as Umm Ayman because of her son Ayman from an earlier marriage. Later, after Islam, she married Zayd ibn Harithah رضي الله عنه, the beloved Companion of the Prophet ﷺ.

Her life joined several sacred threads together: the childhood care of the Prophet ﷺ, early Islam, migration, the household of Zayd رضي الله عنه, and the upbringing of Usamah رضي الله عنه.

Ibn Sa'd; Ibn Hajar; Ibn Abd al-Barr; adh-Dhahabi

The Prophet ﷺ honoured her

The Prophet ﷺ loved and honoured Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها. Reports mention that he would say she was his mother after his mother, meaning that she held a deeply respected place because of her care for him.

This honour shows Islam’s recognition of caregiving. A woman who served, protected, and cared for a child became honoured by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and remembered by the Ummah.

Her relationship with the Prophet ﷺ was not based on wealth, tribe, or public power. It was based on loyalty, service, faith, and love.

Ibn Sa'd; al-Hakim; Ibn Hajar; Seerah and virtue reports

Her Islam and migration

Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها accepted Islam and remained loyal to the Prophet ﷺ. She migrated for Allah, and reports mention difficulty during her journey, including thirst and hardship.

Some reports describe Allah sending relief to her in a remarkable way during migration. Such reports are mentioned in books of virtues and biography, but the exact details should be taught carefully because their chains are discussed by scholars.

What is clear is that she was a believing migrant woman who left for Allah, and migration in the early period was a sign of sincerity and sacrifice.

Ibn Sa'd; Ibn Hajar; Ibn Abd al-Barr; reports vary in strength

Migration for Allah

وَالَّذِينَ هَاجَرُوا فِي اللَّهِ مِن بَعْدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا لَنُبَوِّئَنَّهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً

Meaning: “Those who migrated for Allah after they were wronged, We will surely settle them in this world in a good place.”

Qur'an 16:41

Marriage to Zayd ibn Harithah رضي الله عنه

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged marriage to Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها, and Zayd ibn Harithah رضي الله عنه married her. Zayd رضي الله عنه was one of the most beloved people to the Prophet ﷺ.

From this marriage came Usamah ibn Zayd رضي الله عنهما, whom the Prophet ﷺ loved greatly. Usamah رضي الله عنه grew up in a household beloved to the Prophet ﷺ from both sides: his father Zayd رضي الله عنه and his mother Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها.

This family teaches that the Prophet ﷺ valued people for iman, loyalty, and love, not for outer status.

Sahih Muslim 2424; Ibn Sa'd; Ibn Hajar; biographical reports

Her son Ayman رضي الله عنه

Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها had a son named Ayman from an earlier marriage. Reports mention him among the Companions, and he is connected to the Battle of Hunayn in biographical works.

These reports should be mentioned with care because details vary between sources.

Ibn Sa'd; Ibn Hajar; Ibn Abd al-Barr

Her son Usamah رضي الله عنه

Usamah ibn Zayd رضي الله عنهما was deeply loved by the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ loved him and his father, and authentic reports mention this special love.

Through Usamah رضي الله عنه, the honour of Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها remained connected to the Prophet’s ﷺ household and Companions.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3730; Sahih Muslim 2426; biographical reports

The Prophet ﷺ visits her

The Prophet ﷺ visited Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها during his life. After the Prophet ﷺ returned to Allah, Abu Bakr and Umar رضي الله عنهما visited her, following the Prophet’s ﷺ practice of visiting her.

When they visited, she wept. They told her that what is with Allah is better for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She replied that she was not crying because she did not know that what is with Allah is better for him, but because revelation from heaven had stopped.

Her words made Abu Bakr and Umar رضي الله عنهما weep too. This report is one of the deepest glimpses into her heart. She was not crying only from personal loss. She was grieving the end of revelation descending.

Sahih Muslim 2454

The completion of revelation

الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ

Meaning: “This day I have perfected for you your religion.”

Qur'an 5:3

Her love for revelation

The tears of Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها show spiritual understanding. Many people feel the loss of a person they love, but she also felt the weight of revelation no longer descending.

This teaches that the Companions did not treat revelation as information only. Revelation was life, guidance, correction, nearness to Allah, and the light by which the Ummah was being built.

Her grief teaches love for the Qur'an and Sunnah. The believer should not read revelation coldly. It is Allah’s guidance and the greatest mercy to this Ummah.

Sahih Muslim 2454; Qur'an 5:3; Qur'an 42:52

Her personality and speech

Reports mention moments showing Umm Ayman’s رضي الله عنها direct speech and unique personality. Some reports describe her accent and phrases in a gentle, affectionate way.

These reports should be written with adab. The point is not to mock her speech, but to show the familiar, warm relationship she had with the Prophet ﷺ and the Companions.

She was loved as a real person, with her own manner, emotion, humour, faith, and loyalty.

Sahih Muslim 2454; Ibn Sa'd; Ibn Hajar; reports vary in wording

Reports that need careful wording

Some details about Umm Ayman رضي الله عنها, such as exact early household arrangements, migration miracles, and certain personal anecdotes, are reported in Seerah and biographical works with different strengths.

A careful page should keep the strongest points central: she cared for the Prophet ﷺ in childhood, accepted Islam, migrated, married Zayd رضي الله عنه, was the mother of Usamah رضي الله عنه, was visited by the Prophet ﷺ, and wept because revelation had stopped.

Her honour should be taught through loyalty and faith, not through exaggerated storytelling.
