Signs of the Final Hour

Fitan, Killing, and Confusion

Among the minor signs of the Hour are the spread of fitan, the increase of killing, and a time when people become confused about truth, safety, loyalty, and even why blood is being shed. These narrations do not make Muslims hopeless. They teach believers to hold firmly to faith, avoid reckless involvement in chaos, protect life, and turn quickly to righteous deeds.

Overview What this sign means

What This Sign Means

The Arabic word fitan is the plural of fitnah. It can refer to trials, tests, temptations, confusion, civil conflict, religious turmoil, and situations where truth becomes difficult for people to recognise. In the signs of the Hour, fitan are not only personal temptations. They also include public trials that shake communities, spread fear, and pull people into speech or action without knowledge.

The Prophet ﷺ warned that before the Hour, religious ignorance would spread, knowledge would be taken away, killing would increase, and trials would appear. These signs are connected. When knowledge weakens and people speak without fear of Allah, anger becomes easier, rumours spread faster, and blood can become cheap in people’s eyes.

This topic must be handled carefully. The hadith do not give permission for Muslims to accuse every hardship of being a final end-time event, nor do they allow people to run behind every conflict. They teach the believer to value life, avoid oppression, seek knowledge, control the tongue, and stay close to Allah when the world becomes noisy.

Qur’an and Hadith Source

  • Qur’an 8:25: Allah warns believers to fear a trial that may not strike only the wrongdoers among them, showing that public fitnah can harm wider society.
  • Sahih al-Bukhari 7062, 7063 and 7064: The Prophet ﷺ said that near the Hour, knowledge would be taken away, ignorance would spread, and al-harj would increase. The narration explains that al-harj means killing.
  • Sahih al-Bukhari 7121: The Prophet ﷺ listed several signs, including two large groups fighting with many casualties, the appearance of afflictions, and the increase of al-harj.
  • Sahih Muslim 2908a: The Prophet ﷺ said a time would come when the killer would not know why he killed and the one killed would not know why he was killed.
Sign 01 Fitan will appear

Trials Will Spread and Become Hard to Escape

  • The Prophet ﷺ warned of fitan before the Hour. These trials can be religious, social, political, emotional, and moral. They can confuse people so deeply that a person may rush into words, loyalties, anger, or actions before asking what Allah wants from him.
  • Trials can attack the heart very quickly. One narration describes a person being a believer in the morning and falling into disbelief by evening, or being a believer in the evening and falling into disbelief by morning, selling his religion for worldly gain.
  • Fitan are not always obvious at the beginning. They may come wrapped in slogans, crowds, anger, emotion, tribal loyalty, money, fear, or pride. A believer judges by Qur’an, Sunnah, justice, knowledge, and fear of standing before Allah.

  • Sahih Muslim 118: The Prophet ﷺ urged believers to hasten to good deeds before trials like pieces of a dark night, in which a man may be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever by evening, selling his religion for worldly goods.
  • Sahih al-Bukhari 7121: The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that afflictions would appear among the signs before the Hour.
  • Qur’an 8:25: Allah warns against a trial that may not be limited only to those who commit wrong.
Sign 02 Al-Harj will increase

Killing Will Become Widespread

  • The Prophet ﷺ used the word al-harj. The narrations explain that it means killing. This does not refer only to one battle or one event. It points to a wider condition before the Hour where bloodshed increases and killing becomes common.
  • Islam treats life as sacred. The spread of killing is not only a political problem or news headline. It is a spiritual disaster, because the heart can become used to violence and lose its shock at unlawful bloodshed.
  • The believer must not become part of oppression. This sign does not make every person responsible for every act of violence, but it warns Muslims not to cheer injustice, spread rumours that cause harm, or treat innocent life lightly.

  • Sahih al-Bukhari 7062 and 7063: The Prophet ﷺ said that near the establishment of the Hour, ignorance would spread, knowledge would be taken away, and there would be much al-harj. The narration states that al-harj means killing.
  • Sahih al-Bukhari 7064: The Prophet ﷺ again mentioned general ignorance and abundant al-harj near the Hour.
  • Qur’an 5:32: Allah teaches the gravity of killing a soul unjustly, showing the severe weight of unlawful bloodshed.
Sign 03 Confused bloodshed

The Killer Will Not Know Why He Killed

  • One narration describes senseless violence. A time will come when the killer will not know why he killed, and the one killed will not know why he was killed. This describes violence becoming confused, senseless, and widespread.
  • Confusion can drag people into harm. People may be pulled by rage, mobs, false information, blind loyalty, revenge, political chaos, or pressure from groups until they become tools in a fitnah.
  • The believer must slow down during confusion. Before speaking, sharing, supporting, or joining anything, a Muslim must fear Allah and remember that bravery in Islam is tied to knowledge, justice, restraint, and accountability.

Sign 04 Large conflicts

Two Great Groups Will Fight with Many Casualties

  • The Prophet ﷺ mentioned two large groups fighting. He said the Hour would not be established until two large groups fight each other and there are many casualties between them, even though their claim or call is one.
  • Not every banner proves truth. In times of conflict, slogans may sound religious while actions violate the limits of Allah. Truth is measured by revelation, justice, knowledge, and taqwa, not by numbers, anger, or group identity.
  • Internal fighting is a grave wound. The Qur’an commands reconciliation between believing groups when they fight and commands justice even when emotions are hot. A believer should never enjoy bloodshed or beautify oppression.

Response Stay firm

How a Believer Should Respond

The believer responds to fitan with knowledge, worship, patience, silence when speech will harm, and action only when action is guided by the Qur’an and Sunnah. Fitan are not entertainment. They are not gossip material. They are tests that can burn faith, families, communities, and lives.

When confusion spreads, the safest heart is not the loudest heart. It is the heart that fears Allah, checks facts, asks people of knowledge, avoids injustice, protects life, and remains busy with repentance and good deeds.

  • Do not rush into confusion. A believer does not follow every crowd, rumour, speech, trend, or emotional wave.
  • Protect the sanctity of life. Bloodshed is not a small issue in Islam, and supporting injustice with the tongue is also dangerous.
  • Stay close to knowledge. Ignorance and fitnah walk together; authentic knowledge helps a believer see through the fog.
  • Hasten to good deeds. The Prophet ﷺ specifically told believers to be quick in righteous deeds before dark trials overtake people.
