Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr is the first day of Shawwal after Ramadan is completed. It is a day of gratitude, takbir, zakat al-Fitr, Eid prayer, family ties, halal joy, and remembering that the month of fasting should leave the heart cleaner, softer, and more obedient to Allah.

What is Eid al-Fitr?

  • Eid al-Fitr is the festival after Ramadan. It comes on the first day of Shawwal, immediately after the fasting month is completed. The word fitr is connected to breaking the fast, so this Eid marks the end of the compulsory Ramadan fasts.Reference: Qur’an 2:185 connects completing the prescribed number of Ramadan days with magnifying Allah and gratitude.
  • It is not only food and clothes. Eid is a day of worship-filled happiness: takbir, zakat al-Fitr, Eid prayer, visiting family, feeding others, and staying away from sinful celebration.
  • It is different from Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Fitr is after Ramadan and has zakat al-Fitr. Eid al-Adha is in Dhul Hijjah and is connected to Hajj and qurbani.
  • It is a gift from Allah. When the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah and found people celebrating two recreational days, he said Allah had replaced them with two better days: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.Reference: Sunan Abi Dawud 1134 and Sunan an-Nasa’i 1556.

When was the first Eid al-Fitr celebrated?

  • The first Eid al-Fitr was celebrated in Madinah. It happened after the Muslims completed their first obligatory Ramadan fast after the Hijrah.
  • This is commonly placed in Shawwal 2 AH. Ramadan fasting was made obligatory in 2 AH through the verses of Surah al-Baqarah. After that first Ramadan ended, the Muslims celebrated Eid al-Fitr.Reference: Qur’an 2:183-185 for the obligation of Ramadan fasting; scholars commonly mention the obligation began in 2 AH.
  • It was not copied from old festivals. The Prophet ﷺ made clear that Allah gave this Ummah two better annual days: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.Reference: Sunan Abi Dawud 1134 and Sunan an-Nasa’i 1556.
  • Simple timeline: Hijrah to Madinah → Ramadan fasting becomes obligatory → Muslims fast Ramadan → Shawwal crescent is confirmed → first Eid al-Fitr is celebrated in Madinah.
Remember: Eid al-Fitr was born from worship, not entertainment. It came after fasting, Qur’an, patience, prayer, and obedience.

How Eid al-Fitr starts: sighting the moon of Shawwal

  • Eid begins when Shawwal begins. The Islamic month is lunar, so Ramadan ends when the crescent of Shawwal is confirmed, or when Ramadan is completed as thirty days.
  • The Prophet ﷺ gave the rule clearly. Fast when the crescent is sighted and end the fast when the crescent is sighted. If it is hidden by clouds, complete the month as thirty days.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1906 and Sahih Muslim 1081.
  • The Eid night begins after Maghrib. If the Shawwal crescent is confirmed after Maghrib, Ramadan has ended and the night of Eid has begun. The Eid prayer is then performed the next morning.
  • Do not celebrate Eid before it is established. Ramadan should not be cut short because of excitement, shopping, holidays, or rumours. If Shawwal is not confirmed, Ramadan is completed.
Situation What it means What Muslims do
Shawwal crescent is confirmed Ramadan is complete and 1 Shawwal has entered. That night is Eid night. Eid prayer is offered the next morning.
Crescent is not seen or not accepted Ramadan continues until thirty days are completed. The next day is still a fast. Eid is after the thirtieth fast.
Announcements differ by country Moon sighting can differ because of local sighting, regional sighting, weather, testimony, and fiqh method. Follow a reliable local Muslim authority to protect unity and avoid confusion.
Simple rule: Eid al-Fitr is not guessed. It is established by the Shawwal crescent or by completing Ramadan as thirty days.

Moon sighting details people often ask about

  • Why do some places celebrate on different days? Communities may use local sighting, regional sighting, global sighting, calculations for visibility support, or different testimony rules. These are fiqh and authority matters, not a reason for ordinary people to attack one another.
  • Should I follow my family abroad? In normal situations, follow the reliable Muslim authority where you are living. Eid prayer is public worship, and public worship needs order.
  • What if the news comes late? If Shawwal is confirmed late at night, Eid begins from that night and Eid prayer is the next morning. Avoid building your religion on forwarded messages.
  • Who checks moon reports? Qualified scholars, judges, moon sighting committees, or trusted masjid authorities usually verify testimony. A layperson does not need to personally judge every witness.
  • Do not turn the crescent into a quarrel. Moon sighting should lead to takbir and gratitude, not family fights, masjid politics, and suspicious WhatsApp archaeology.

Fasting on Eid al-Fitr is haram

  • It is forbidden to fast on 1 Shawwal. This includes voluntary fasting, qada fasting, the six fasts of Shawwal, and any personal vow fast on the day of Eid al-Fitr.
  • The Prophet ﷺ forbade fasting on the two Eid days. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are not fasting days.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1991 and Sahih Muslim 1138.
  • Six fasts of Shawwal begin after Eid day. The first day available for the six Shawwal fasts is 2 Shawwal, not 1 Shawwal.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1164 mentions the virtue of fasting Ramadan followed by six days of Shawwal.
  • Eating before Eid prayer is Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ would not go out on Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten dates, and he would eat an odd number.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 953.
Fast type Can it be done on Eid al-Fitr? What to do instead
Missed Ramadan fast / qada No Start from 2 Shawwal or later.
Six days of Shawwal No Fast any six days after Eid day within Shawwal.
Voluntary fast No Celebrate within halal limits and resume voluntary fasting later.
Vow fast No Do it on another valid day.

Zakat al-Fitr / Fitrah: the charity before Eid

  • Zakat al-Fitr is a special charity at the end of Ramadan. It is also called fitrah in many communities. It is different from yearly zakat on wealth.
  • It is connected to every Muslim under care. Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما reported that the Prophet ﷺ enjoined zakat al-Fitr on every Muslim: free or enslaved, male or female, young or old.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1503 and Sahih Muslim 984.
  • It should be given before Eid prayer. The Prophet ﷺ ordered that it be given before people went out for Eid prayer.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1509.
  • It purifies and feeds. Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما reported that it was prescribed as purification for the fasting person from idle or improper speech and as food for the poor.Reference: Sunan Abi Dawud 1609 and Sunan Ibn Majah 1827; scholars discuss the chains, and the meaning is widely used in fiqh.
Topic Simple ruling What to remember
Who gives it? Every Muslim who can afford it. The head of household usually gives on behalf of dependents. Include children and dependents under your care.
What is given? The hadith mentions one sa‘ of staple food items such as dates, barley, raisins, or similar food of the community. Many places use rice, wheat, flour, dates, or the local staple equivalent.
Food or cash? Scholars differ. Many prefer staple food because of the hadith wording; some allow cash when it benefits the poor. Follow a reliable local scholar or trusted masjid system.
Best time Before the Eid prayer. Arrange it early so it reaches the poor on time.
Giving early It may be given one or two days before Eid according to the practice of the companions. This helps trusted collectors distribute it properly.
If forgotten Give it as soon as remembered. Do not ignore it because the best time was missed.
Simple rule: Yearly zakat is connected to wealth and nisab. Zakat al-Fitr is connected to the end of Ramadan and should reach the poor before Eid prayer.

From the last evening of Ramadan to Eid prayer

Time What to do Reminder
After Maghrib If Shawwal is confirmed, Ramadan has ended and Eid night has begun. Begin takbir, gratitude, dua, and lawful joy.
Eid night Prepare clothes, food, family plans, and zakat al-Fitr if not already given. Do not turn a blessed night into sin or waste.
Eid morning Make ghusl, wear clean good clothing, eat dates before leaving, and say takbir. Eating before prayer shows Ramadan has ended. Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 953.
Before prayer Give zakat al-Fitr if it has not yet been distributed. Do not delay it casually beyond the Eid prayer.
Eid prayer Pray two rak‘ahs with the Muslims and listen to the khutbah. Prayer comes before the khutbah. Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 956 and Sahih Muslim 889.

Takbir of Eid al-Fitr

Allah says that believers should complete the prescribed number of Ramadan days and magnify Allah for guiding them, so that they may be grateful. This is why takbir is one of the most beautiful signs of Eid.

Takbir begins after Eid is confirmed and continues until the Eid prayer. Men may raise their voices moderately in public places where appropriate; women say it in a modest manner.

Reference: Qur’an 2:185.

Common Eid takbir

Transliteration: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illa Allah, wallahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahil hamd.

Meaning: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god worthy of worship except Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and all praise belongs to Allah.

Different wordings

More than one wording of Eid takbir is reported from the early Muslims. Do not fight over acceptable wordings. The meaning should magnify Allah and keep the heart grateful.

Practical point: Follow the takbir wording used in your masjid or family, as long as the wording is sound.

Eid prayer: what happens?

  • Eid prayer is a public prayer of gratitude. It is normally prayed in congregation, preferably in an open prayer place when possible, though mosques are also used in many places.
  • It has two rak‘ahs. The Prophet ﷺ prayed two rak‘ahs on Eid and did not pray before or after it at the Eid prayer place.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 989.
  • There is no adhan and no iqamah. Eid prayer is called without the normal adhan and iqamah used for the five daily prayers.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 960 and Sahih Muslim 886.
  • The prayer comes before the khutbah. The Prophet ﷺ prayed Eid first, then delivered the khutbah.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 956 and Sahih Muslim 889.
  • Extra takbirs have valid differences. Follow your imam. Do not create noise in the row because another school of fiqh counts the extra takbirs differently.
Part Simple guide Important reminder
Time Morning, after the sunrise prohibition time has passed and before zenith. Follow the announced local Eidgah or masjid timing.
Rak‘ahs Two rak‘ahs. Follow the imam in the extra takbirs.
Khutbah After the prayer. Listen respectfully and avoid chatting.
Late arrival Join the imam wherever he is. Ask a local scholar if you missed the whole prayer, because fiqh details differ.

Sunnah manners of Eid al-Fitr

Sunnah / manner What to do Reference / explanation
Eat before leaving Eat dates before Eid al-Fitr prayer, preferably an odd number. Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 953.
Ghusl and cleanliness Make ghusl, be clean, and wear good permissible clothing. Recommended by scholars based on the practice of the companions and general Islamic manners.
Takbir Say takbir from the confirmation of Eid until the Eid prayer. Reference: Qur’an 2:185.
Different route Use a different route when returning if practical. Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 986.
Attend the gathering Attend Eid prayer and listen to the khutbah if able. Public worship should be given priority over cooking, shopping, and late sleep.
Halal joy Visit family, greet Muslims, feed others, and show happiness within Islamic limits. Eid is joy with obedience, not joy against obedience.

Women, children, and the Eid gathering

  • Women were encouraged to attend the Eid gathering. The Prophet ﷺ instructed that women come out for Eid, including young women and women who usually stayed in private spaces.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 324 and Sahih Muslim 890.
  • Menstruating women do not pray. They may attend the good gathering and dua of the Muslims while staying away from the prayer area.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 324 and Sahih Muslim 890.
  • Women should observe modesty when going out. Eid clothing may be beautiful and clean, but it should not become display that breaks Islamic limits. Scent that attracts attention outside should be avoided.
  • Children should be taught Eid with love. Let them feel joy, teach them takbir, explain fitrah, and show them that Islam has celebration without disobedience.
  • Do not shame the poor or simple families. Eid is not a competition of outfits, sweets, gifts, or photos. The poor must be included with honour.

Eid greetings and family ties

  • There is no single compulsory Eid greeting. The greeting “Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum” is reported from the companions and means: May Allah accept from us and from you.
  • “Eid Mubarak” is permissible as a cultural greeting. Its meaning is good, and it is widely understood as a dua for a blessed Eid.
  • Eid is a time to mend ties. Call relatives, visit where appropriate, forgive small matters, and avoid turning Eid into a scoreboard of who called first.
  • Gifts and food are allowed within means. Islam allows happiness, but debt, showing off, waste, and insulting those who cannot spend do not belong to the spirit of Eid.
  • Keep salah alive after Ramadan. A beautiful Eid is not one where prayer disappears by Dhuhr. Ramadan should leave worship stronger, not packed away with the Eid decorations.

Eid acceptance greeting

تَقَبَّلَ اللّٰهُ مِنَّا وَمِنْكُمْ

Transliteration: Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum.

Meaning: May Allah accept from us and from you.

Simple English greeting

May Allah accept your Ramadan, forgive your sins, bless your Eid, and keep your heart firm after Ramadan.

When: Use as a family message, greeting card line, or personal dua.

After Eid: Shawwal fasts and missed Ramadan fasts

  • The six days of Shawwal are virtuous. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever fasts Ramadan then follows it with six days of Shawwal is as if he fasted the whole year.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1164.
  • They cannot begin on Eid day. Since fasting on Eid al-Fitr is forbidden, the six days may begin from 2 Shawwal or later.
  • They do not have to be six consecutive days. Many scholars allow them separately within Shawwal. A person should choose what is easier and more consistent.
  • Missed Ramadan fasts are obligatory. If someone has qada, they should not treat it lightly. Scholars differ on whether qada must be completed before the six of Shawwal; the safest habit is to make up obligatory fasts first when possible.
  • Eid should not erase Ramadan discipline. Keep salah, Qur’an, modesty, charity, and self-control alive after Eid.

Claims and customs to handle carefully

  • Claim: “Eid night has a fixed special prayer with guaranteed reward.” A person may pray at night as general worship, but specific fixed claims about Eid night prayers and guaranteed rewards are based on weak reports. Do not present weak claims as confirmed Sunnah.
  • Claim: “Eid means no rules today.” False. Eid is halal joy. Prayer, modesty, family rights, honesty, and avoiding haram still apply.
  • Claim: “One exact greeting is compulsory.” Not correct. Good greetings such as Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum and Eid Mubarak are allowed. Do not make a permissible greeting into a battlefield.
  • Claim: “Eid al-Fitr has qurbani.” Not correct. Qurbani belongs to Eid al-Adha in Dhul Hijjah, not Eid al-Fitr.
  • Claim: “If I missed fitrah before prayer, I should leave it.” No. Give it as soon as remembered, repent for negligence if there was negligence, and do not ignore the poor person’s right.
  • Claim: “Moon sighting arguments prove who has more iman.” No. Reliable fiqh differences exist. Follow trusted authority and keep adab.

Common mistakes on Eid al-Fitr

  • Delaying zakat al-Fitr until after Eid prayer without need. Arrange it early so it reaches the poor on time.
  • Fasting on Eid day. This is not piety. It goes against a clear prophetic prohibition.
  • Starting the six fasts of Shawwal on 1 Shawwal. Begin from 2 Shawwal or later.
  • Skipping Eid prayer because of cooking, shopping, or late sleep. Prepare earlier so worship is not pushed outside the door.
  • Ignoring poor relatives and neighbours. Fitrah should soften the heart toward those who are struggling.
  • Turning Eid into extravagance. New clothes and good food are fine within means. Showing off and waste are not.
  • Letting salah collapse after Ramadan. Eid should be the bridge from Ramadan into better habits, not the trapdoor out of worship.

Quick Eid al-Fitr checklist

Stage Checklist Heart reminder
Before Eid Wait for reliable Shawwal confirmation, prepare fitrah, plan prayer, and keep the night clean. Do not let rumours or rushing spoil the end of Ramadan.
Eid morning Make ghusl, wear clean good clothing, eat dates, say takbir, and reach prayer early. Begin the celebration with obedience.
Eid prayer Pray two rak‘ahs, follow the imam, listen to the khutbah, and greet Muslims well. Eid is a public sign of Islam.
Eid day Do not fast, visit family, include the poor, feed others, and keep salah on time. Celebrate without dropping the light Ramadan gave you.
After Eid Make up missed fasts and consider the six days of Shawwal after Eid day. Ramadan ends, but worship does not.

What Eid al-Fitr should build in the heart

  • Gratitude. Allah guided believers through Ramadan, fasting, Qur’an, and prayer. Eid begins with thanking Him, not forgetting Him.Reference: Qur’an 2:185.
  • Care for the poor. Zakat al-Fitr teaches that Eid is not complete while poor Muslims are excluded from joy.
  • Unity. Eid prayer gathers Muslims together, rich and poor, old and young, strong and weak, all standing before Allah.
  • Lawful joy. Islam does not crush happiness; it purifies it. Food, gifts, visits, and smiles can all become worship when kept within Allah’s limits.
  • Continuity after Ramadan. Eid should not be a full stop after worship. It should be the first bright page after Ramadan.

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds.
