Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha is the great Eid of sacrifice, gratitude, takbir, Hajj, and obedience to Allah. It is connected to the legacy of Ibrahim عليه السلام, the rites of Hajj, the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, the Day of Arafah, the Eid prayer, and the worship of udhiyah for those who are able.

What Eid al-Adha means

  • Eid al-Adha means the Eid of sacrifice. It comes on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, after the Day of Arafah, while pilgrims are completing the central rites of Hajj and Muslims around the world are remembering Allah with takbir, prayer, and sacrifice.Reference: Qur’an 22:27-37 mentions Hajj, appointed days, remembrance of Allah, and sacrificial animals.
  • It is one of the two Eids of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ taught the Muslims that Allah gave this Ummah two days of celebration: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.Reference: Sunan Abi Dawud 1134 and Sunan an-Nasa’i 1556, commonly cited regarding the two Eids.
  • It is not only a feast. Eid al-Adha is a day of worship first: salah, takbir, gratitude, obedience, charity, family ties, feeding others, and remembering that Allah wants taqwa, not display.Reference: Qur’an 22:37 says the meat and blood do not reach Allah, but taqwa reaches Him.
  • It is linked to Hajj but not only for pilgrims. Pilgrims continue their Hajj rites, while non-pilgrims pray Eid, remember Allah, and offer udhiyah if able.

How Eid al-Adha is connected to Ibrahim عليه السلام

  • Ibrahim عليه السلام is the father of tawheed in this story. Allah tested him with mighty tests, and he submitted with trust, love, and obedience.
  • The sacrifice is connected to the test of Ibrahim عليه السلام and his son. Allah mentions the dream, the son’s submission, Ibrahim’s readiness to obey, and the great ransom Allah provided.Reference: Qur’an 37:100-111.
  • The Qur’an does not name the son directly in the sacrifice passage. Many Muslim scholars say it was Ismail عليه السلام, and this became the well-known view among the majority of later Muslim scholars. The safest wording is to say “his son” where quoting the passage, and mention the common scholarly view separately.Reference: Qur’an 37:102 mentions “my son” without naming him in that verse.
  • Eid al-Adha teaches that Allah does not need the animal. Allah wants surrender, sincerity, taqwa, and obedience. The sacrifice is worship only when done for Allah.Reference: Qur’an 22:37.
  • The legacy also includes Hajar عليها السلام and Ismail عليه السلام. Hajj carries the memory of trust in Allah, the search between Safa and Marwah, the blessing of Zamzam, and the building of a believing community in Makkah.Reference: Qur’an 2:158 mentions Safa and Marwah as symbols of Allah; Sahih al-Bukhari 3364 contains the long narration of Hajar and Zamzam.

The Ka‘bah, Hajj, and the call to pilgrimage

  • The Ka‘bah is the first House appointed for mankind. Allah says the first House established for people is the one at Bakkah, blessed and a guidance for the worlds.Reference: Qur’an 3:96.
  • Ibrahim and Ismail عليهما السلام raised the foundations of the House. They made dua that Allah accept from them and make their descendants a Muslim nation submitted to Him.Reference: Qur’an 2:125-129.
  • Allah commanded Ibrahim عليه السلام to call people to Hajj. The Qur’an mentions: proclaim Hajj to mankind, and they will come on foot and on every lean camel from every distant path.Reference: Qur’an 22:27.
  • Eid al-Adha happens at the heart of the Hajj season. The 10th of Dhul Hijjah is Yawm an-Nahr, the day of sacrifice, when pilgrims perform major rites and Muslims outside Hajj celebrate Eid.
  • The first fully legislated Hajj of this Ummah was taught by the Prophet ﷺ. He performed the Farewell Hajj in 10 AH and told the people to learn their rites from him.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1297 mentions the Prophet ﷺ saying to take the Hajj rites from him.

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah

  • These days are among the greatest days of worship. The Prophet ﷺ said that righteous deeds in these days are more beloved to Allah than in other days.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 969.
  • Increase takbir, tahmid, tahlil, Qur’an, prayer, charity, repentance, and fasting. These days should not be treated like ordinary calendar squares. They are a rare worship season.
  • Fasting the first nine days is recommended for non-pilgrims according to many scholars. The Day of Arafah is especially emphasized for those not performing Hajj.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1162 mentions the virtue of fasting the Day of Arafah.
  • Pilgrims standing at Arafah do not fast if it weakens them. The Prophet ﷺ did not fast on the Day of Arafah during Hajj, so pilgrims can focus on dua and worship.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1988 and Sahih Muslim 1123 mention that he was not fasting at Arafah.
  • The 10th day is Eid al-Adha. Fasting on this day is not allowed because Eid is a day of eating, remembering Allah, and celebration.

Fasting rules around Eid al-Adha

Day Ruling Simple explanation
1st to 8th Dhul Hijjah Recommended worship season Fasting is included in righteous deeds for those able, especially outside Hajj. Do not harm yourself or neglect obligations.
9th Dhul Hijjah: Day of Arafah Highly recommended for non-pilgrims Fasting Arafah expiates the previous year and the coming year for the non-pilgrim. Reference: Sahih Muslim 1162.
10th Dhul Hijjah: Eid al-Adha Fasting is forbidden The Prophet ﷺ forbade fasting on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1990 and Sahih Muslim 1137.
11th, 12th, 13th Dhul Hijjah: Days of Tashriq Generally forbidden They are days of eating, drinking, and remembering Allah. Reference: Sahih Muslim 1141a.
Exception for some pilgrims Specific Hajj case The pilgrim doing Tamattu‘ who cannot find the sacrificial animal may fast during Tashriq according to the authentic report. Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1997.
Simple rule: Fast Arafah if you are not in Hajj and able. Do not fast on Eid al-Adha. Do not treat the Days of Tashriq like ordinary optional fasting days.

Takbir on Eid al-Adha

  • Takbir is one of the clearest symbols of Eid. Allah says to remember Him during appointed days and known days, and Eid al-Adha is surrounded by days of remembrance.Reference: Qur’an 2:203 and Qur’an 22:28.
  • General takbir begins from the start of Dhul Hijjah. Many scholars encourage abundant takbir during the first ten days: in homes, streets, markets, and personal worship.
  • Restricted takbir after obligatory prayers is emphasized from Fajr of Arafah until Asr of the 13th Dhul Hijjah according to many scholars. Details vary between madhhabs, so follow your local scholarly practice without fighting over it.
  • There is no single compulsory wording that everyone must use. Several takbir wordings are reported from the Companions, so valid differences exist.

Common Eid takbir

Transliteration: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illa Allah, wallahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahil-hamd.

Meaning: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god worthy of worship except Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise.

When: During the first ten days, Eid day, and the Days of Tashriq according to the known practice.

Arafah remembrance

Meaning: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, without partner. His is the kingdom and His is the praise, and He is able over all things.

Source: Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3585 reports this among the best words said by the Prophet ﷺ and the prophets before him on Arafah.

Eid al-Adha prayer: what to do

  • Pray Eid prayer in congregation if you are able. Eid prayer is one of the strongest public signs of Islam and should not be skipped casually.
  • Make ghusl, wear clean good clothes, and go with dignity. These are from the manners of Eid mentioned by scholars based on reports from the early Muslims and the general beauty of gathering for worship.
  • Say takbir while going to the prayer. Raise the remembrance of Allah without turning it into shouting, showing off, or disturbing people.
  • The Eid prayer comes before the khutbah. This is different from Jumu‘ah, where the khutbah comes before the prayer.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 956 and Sahih Muslim 889 mention the Prophet ﷺ praying before the khutbah on Eid.
  • There is no adhan or iqamah for Eid prayer. The Eid prayer begins without the usual adhan and iqamah.Reference: Sahih Muslim 887.
  • Listen to the khutbah respectfully. Even where the khutbah is treated differently from Jumu‘ah in legal details, adab still matters.
  • Women were encouraged to attend the Eid gathering. The hadith of Umm ‘Atiyyah رضي الله عنها mentions women coming out for Eid, while menstruating women avoid the prayer area and still witness goodness and the Muslims’ dua.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 971 and Sahih Muslim 890.

Should you eat before Eid al-Adha prayer?

  • Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha have different food manners. On Eid al-Fitr, the Prophet ﷺ would eat before going out, commonly dates. On Eid al-Adha, the known practice is to eat after returning from the prayer, ideally from the sacrifice if possible.
  • Do not turn this into hardship. If someone has a medical need or a long delay, they should not harm themselves. The Sunnah is not meant to crush people.
  • The bigger point is obedience. Eid al-Adha begins with prayer and remembrance, then sacrifice and food. It is not a day that starts with heedlessness.
  • If you are not offering udhiyah, you can still follow the Eid prayer and remembrance. The day is still sacred and full of worship even for someone who cannot afford sacrifice.

Udhiyah / Qurbani: what it is

  • Udhiyah is the sacrificial worship offered on Eid al-Adha and the Days of Tashriq. It is done for Allah, not for family pride, photos, status, or meat storage.
  • It is a confirmed Sunnah according to many scholars and wajib according to the Hanafi school for the one who meets the conditions. Muslims should follow reliable local scholarship for the exact obligation level in their madhhab.
  • The animal must be from the recognized livestock. Sheep, goats, cattle, and camels are the usual categories discussed in the books of fiqh.Reference: Qur’an 22:34 mentions sacrificial animals from livestock Allah provided.
  • One sheep or goat is for one household. A cow or camel may be shared by seven shares according to the known authentic practice.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1318 mentions sharing a camel or cow among seven during Hajj; scholars use this principle in sacrifice discussions.
  • The sacrifice must be after Eid prayer. If someone slaughters before the Eid prayer, it is treated as ordinary meat, not the Eid sacrifice.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 955 and Sahih Muslim 1961 mention that sacrifice before prayer must be replaced.
  • The timing continues through the Days of Tashriq according to many scholars. Details vary by madhhab, but the sacrifice is not done before Eid prayer.

Animal conditions and distribution

Topic Ruling / guidance Reference / explanation
Animal type Sheep, goat, cow, buffalo, camel according to local fiqh categories under livestock. Qur’an 22:34 refers to sacrificial animals from livestock.
Age The animal must meet the valid age according to fiqh. Ask locally for exact ages because categories differ by animal. The age rules are explained in hadith and fiqh; do not guess for a purchase.
Defects Clearly defective animals should not be chosen for Allah’s worship. Sunan Abi Dawud 2802 and Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 1497 mention obvious defects such as clear lameness, illness, one-eyedness, and weakness.
Intention It must be for Allah, not showing off. Qur’an 22:37 says taqwa reaches Allah.
Distribution Eat from it, gift from it, and give in charity. Many Muslims divide into three portions, but the exact division is not a rigid Qur’anic formula. Qur’an 22:28 and 22:36 mention eating from them and feeding the needy.
Paying the butcher Do not pay the butcher from the sacrificial meat or skin as payment. Pay wages separately. Sahih al-Bukhari 1717 and Sahih Muslim 1317 mention not giving the butcher from it as wages.
Online qurbani Allowed by many scholars when the service is trustworthy and performs it correctly within the valid time. Choose a reliable organization, not a mystery box with a religious label slapped on it.

Hair and nails before udhiyah

  • If a person intends to offer udhiyah, they should avoid cutting hair and nails from the beginning of Dhul Hijjah until the sacrifice is done. This is based on an authentic narration in Sahih Muslim.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1977.
  • This applies to the one offering the sacrifice. It does not automatically place every family member under the same rule according to many scholars, unless they are personally offering a sacrifice.
  • This does not make the person in ihram. They may use perfume, wear normal clothes, have marital relations, and live normally. This is not Hajj ihram.
  • If someone forgot or did not know, they should not panic. They should avoid it once they learn, seek Allah’s forgiveness, and still offer the sacrifice.
  • Scholars differ on whether this is haram or disliked. Follow your madhhab or trusted scholar without turning Eid into a nail-and-hair argument arena.

How to perform Eid al-Adha at home and outside

Step What to do Important reminder
Night before Eid Begin the Eid spirit with takbir, gratitude, repentance, and family kindness. Do not let shopping swallow the worship.
Morning Make ghusl, wear clean clothing, say takbir, and go early to the Eid prayer. Do not miss Fajr while preparing for Eid.
Eid prayer Pray with the imam, then listen to the khutbah. No adhan or iqamah for Eid prayer. Reference: Sahih Muslim 887.
After prayer Offer udhiyah if it is due upon you and you are able. Sacrifice before Eid prayer does not count as udhiyah. Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 955.
Family and community Visit, greet, feed, forgive, give gifts, and include the poor. Eid is not complete when the needy are invisible.
Days of Tashriq Continue takbir and remembrance of Allah. They are days of eating, drinking, and dhikr. Reference: Sahih Muslim 1141a.

Etiquette of sacrifice

  • Use mercy with the animal. Islam does not allow cruelty under the banner of worship. The knife should be sharp, the animal should not be tortured, and the process should be handled by someone capable.
  • Mention Allah’s name. Sacrifice is worship, so it is not done as a habit without remembering Allah.Reference: Qur’an 22:34 and 22:36 mention remembering Allah’s name over the sacrificial animals.
  • Face the qiblah where possible according to the known etiquette. If a professional service is doing it, choose one that respects Islamic procedure.
  • Do not film cruelty or turn sacrifice into entertainment. Children and adults should learn reverence, not spectacle.
  • Cleanliness is part of adab. Keep the place clean, follow local rules, avoid public harm, and do not leave waste in streets.
  • The poor have a right in the joy. Eat, gift, and give charity. Eid meat should reach homes that rarely taste it.

Women and Eid al-Adha

  • Women may attend the Eid gathering. The Prophet ﷺ instructed women to come out for Eid so they could witness goodness and the dua of the Muslims.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 971 and Sahih Muslim 890.
  • Menstruating women do not pray the Eid prayer. They may attend the gathering according to the hadith while keeping away from the prayer area.
  • Modesty and safety remain part of Eid. Celebration does not cancel hijab, prayer, dignity, or good manners.
  • A woman may arrange qurbani on behalf of herself or her household if she owns the money and intends it. Udhiyah is not a male-only worship.
  • Women performing Hajj follow the Hajj rites with the rulings that apply to them. Their Hajj is valid when its conditions and pillars are fulfilled; menstruation affects tawaf timing and prayer, not their worth before Allah.
  • The mahram issue belongs especially to travel for Hajj. Authentic hadith establish the mahram rule for women’s travel. Some scholars allow obligatory Hajj with trustworthy safe company when conditions are met. Follow reliable scholarship for the exact case and do not reduce it to social media slogans.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1862 and Sahih Muslim 1341 mention the mahram rule for travel.

Greetings, joy, and family manners

  • It is allowed to show happiness on Eid. Eid is a day of permissible joy, food, clean clothing, family visits, and gratitude.
  • Common greetings such as “Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum” are good. This means: May Allah accept from us and from you. It is reported from the early Muslims as an Eid greeting.
  • Do not make Eid a day of haram entertainment. Joy is not a permission slip for missed salah, free mixing without limits, backbiting, showing off, or wasting money.
  • Reconnect family ties where possible. Eid is a good day to reduce grudges, call relatives, include lonely people, and feed those in need.
  • Children should feel Eid beautifully. Teach them takbir, salah, charity, kindness to animals, and the story of Ibrahim عليه السلام in age-appropriate language.

Which sins are forgiven around Eid al-Adha?

  • Fasting Arafah forgives minor sins of two years for non-pilgrims. The Prophet ﷺ said fasting the Day of Arafah expiates the previous year and the coming year.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1162.
  • Hajj Mabrur has an immense reward. The accepted Hajj has no reward except Jannah, and the pilgrim who avoids marital relations and sinful conduct returns purified by Allah’s mercy.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1773 and Sahih Muslim 1349 mention Hajj Mabrur; Sahih al-Bukhari 1521 and Sahih Muslim 1350 mention returning like the day his mother bore him.
  • Major sins require sincere repentance. A person should not use Hajj, Arafah, or sacrifice as a trick to continue oppression, interest, zina, alcohol, abandonment of salah, or harming people.
  • People’s rights must be returned. If someone stole, cheated, abused, slandered, or withheld rights, they must repent to Allah and fix the wrong as much as possible.
  • Udhiyah itself is not a magical eraser. It is worship that Allah accepts from people of taqwa. The heart must be present, obedient, and sincere.Reference: Qur’an 22:37.

Wrong claims and common mistakes

  • Claim: “Eid al-Adha is only about meat.” False. Meat is part of the day, but the heart of Eid is tawheed, takbir, prayer, sacrifice, charity, and obedience.Reference: Qur’an 22:37.
  • Claim: “Any animal is fine.” Wrong. Udhiyah has valid animal categories, age rules, and defect rules. Ask before buying.
  • Claim: “Sacrifice before Eid prayer is better because it is early.” Wrong. Sacrifice before Eid prayer does not count as udhiyah.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 955 and Sahih Muslim 1961.
  • Claim: “Cutting hair or nails makes qurbani invalid.” No. The instruction is serious, but if someone cut hair or nails, the sacrifice is not automatically invalid.
  • Claim: “The whole family becomes like they are in ihram.” Wrong. The hair and nails ruling for the one offering udhiyah does not make them a pilgrim in ihram.
  • Claim: “You can fast on Eid if you missed Ramadan fasts.” No. Eid al-Adha is a day when fasting is forbidden.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1990 and Sahih Muslim 1137.
  • Claim: “Online qurbani never counts.” Not correct. It can count if the organization is trustworthy, the animal is valid, the intention is correct, and the sacrifice is done in the valid time.
  • Claim: “The animal’s blood reaching the ground forgives sins automatically.” False. Allah says the meat and blood do not reach Him. Taqwa reaches Him.Reference: Qur’an 22:37.
  • Claim: “Women have no place in Eid worship.” False. Women were encouraged to attend the Eid gathering, with the prayer rulings that apply to their state.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 971 and Sahih Muslim 890.

Simple Eid al-Adha checklist

Before Eid On Eid day After Eid prayer
Increase worship during the first ten days. Pray Fajr on time and prepare with dignity. Offer udhiyah only after the Eid prayer.
Fast Arafah if you are not in Hajj and able. Say takbir on the way to Eid prayer. Eat, gift, and give charity from the meat.
Arrange valid qurbani through a trusted person or service. Listen to the khutbah and keep adab. Continue takbir during the Days of Tashriq.
If offering udhiyah, avoid cutting hair and nails from 1st Dhul Hijjah. Include women, children, elders, and lonely people in the Eid joy. Do not waste food or forget the poor.
Prepare a dua list and charity plan. Avoid haram celebration and missed salah. Keep the lesson of Ibrahim عليه السلام alive after Eid.

What Eid al-Adha should build in the heart

  • Tawheed. The sacrifice is for Allah alone. No saint, ancestor, grave, tradition, or public praise can share this worship.
  • Submission. Ibrahim عليه السلام teaches that love for Allah stands above desire, fear, comfort, and social pressure.
  • Trust. Hajar عليها السلام teaches that Allah can open Zamzam in the place where people see only dryness.
  • Generosity. Eid meat is not meant to sit in freezers while poor families are forgotten.
  • Gratitude. Eid is a gift from Allah. The believer responds with takbir, salah, charity, and clean happiness.
  • Change. If Hajj, Arafah, Eid prayer, and udhiyah do not soften the heart, then the page looked decorated but the ink never reached the soul.

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds.
