When and why this dua was introduced / taught

This dua was taught by the Prophet ﷺ for the one who is struck by a calamity. Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها heard the Prophet ﷺ say that any Muslim who says this at the time of calamity, with faith and hope for reward, Allah will compensate them with something better. She herself said it after the death of Abu Salamah رضي الله عنه, and Allah later blessed her with something better.

Why this dua matters

This dua teaches surrender without despair. It reminds us that we belong to Allah, will return to Him, and that even inside pain, we can ask Allah for reward and for a better replacement.

When to read
