Surah Al-Hashr begins by reminding us that everything in the heavens and earth glorifies Allah. Creation is not spiritually silent; it declares Allah’s perfection in the way He created for it.

Allah is the Almighty, so no power can defeat Him. He is the All-Wise, so every command, victory, trial, and decree carries wisdom.

This ayah trains the heart to begin with tasbeeh. Before looking at history, conflict, wealth, or people, the believer first remembers that Allah is perfect, powerful, and wise.

Allah describes how He expelled a group from the People of the Scripture who had opposed the Muslims in Madinah. People did not expect them to leave because they seemed secure and fortified.

They trusted their fortresses, but fortresses cannot protect anyone from Allah. Allah reached them from a direction they did not expect and placed fear inside their hearts.

The ayah ends with a command: take lesson, O people of insight. History is not for storytelling only; it is a mirror that shows the weakness of worldly security before Allah’s decree.

Allah explains that exile itself was a decree and a form of worldly consequence. Had Allah decreed otherwise, a different worldly punishment could have reached them.

The ayah reminds us that worldly consequences are not the full story. The Hereafter remains the greater and more serious outcome.

This teaches that Allah’s decree is precise. Sometimes He delays, reduces, changes, or shifts worldly consequences by His wisdom, but no one escapes the final judgment.

Allah states the reason for their consequence: they opposed Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. Their problem was not merely politics, property, or power; it was opposition to divine authority.

Whoever sets themselves against Allah should know that Allah is severe in punishment. No group, strategy, or worldly strength can protect against that.

This ayah teaches the believer to check every stance. The most dangerous position is to be on the opposite side of Allah’s command.

Allah clarifies that what happened during the conflict, including cutting or leaving certain palm trees, was by His permission. This removed doubt from the believers’ hearts.

The matter was not random destruction for desire. It happened within Allah’s permitted judgment and as part of humiliating those who had defiantly opposed Him.

This ayah teaches that believers must act within Allah’s permission, not personal rage. Even in conflict, the standard is divine guidance, not uncontrolled emotion.

Allah explains that this property came to the Messenger ﷺ without the believers having to launch a normal military campaign with horses and camels.

This reminds the believers that victory and provision came from Allah, not from their own strength. Allah gives authority to His messengers as He wills.

This ayah teaches that success should not make believers proud. When Allah opens a door without expected effort, the heart should increase in gratitude, not self-importance.

Allah explains that fay’ wealth was to be distributed for Allah’s cause, the Messenger’s direction, relatives with rights, orphans, the needy, and travelers in need.

The purpose is clearly stated: wealth should not circulate only among the rich. Islam protects society from wealth becoming trapped in elite hands while vulnerable people are ignored.

The ayah also gives a major principle: whatever the Messenger ﷺ gives, take it, and whatever he forbids, stop. True faith accepts prophetic guidance with taqwa.

Allah praises the poor Muhajirun who were forced out of their homes and wealth because of faith. They left behind worldly security to seek Allah’s bounty and pleasure.

They supported Allah’s religion and His Messenger ﷺ even after losing comfort, property, and homeland.

This ayah teaches that truthfulness is proven through sacrifice. The truthful believer is not only truthful in speech, but in loyalty, struggle, and priority.

Allah praises the Ansar, the believers of Madinah, who welcomed the Muhajirun with love. They did not resent what the emigrants were given.

They preferred others over themselves even when they themselves had need. This is one of the highest forms of generosity: giving not from excess only, but while feeling need.

The ayah teaches that real success includes being protected from the greed of the soul. The successful person is not the one who hoards most, but the one Allah frees from selfishness.

Allah teaches the attitude of later believers toward those who came before: they make dua for themselves and for their believing brothers who preceded them in faith.

They also ask Allah to remove resentment from their hearts toward believers. This is a beautiful purification: a Muslim should not carry hatred, envy, or bitterness toward sincere believers.

This ayah gives us a dua for clean hearts. Faith connects generations, and love for the righteous before us is part of a healthy heart.

Allah exposes the hypocrites who promised support to those opposing the believers. They made strong claims of loyalty, but Allah testified that they were lying.

This shows that hypocrisy often speaks loudly. It makes promises, alliances, and dramatic statements, but the heart is not sincere.

The ayah teaches that Allah knows the truth behind political, social, and private promises. A believer should fear making claims that Allah knows are false.

Allah exposes the emptiness of the hypocrites’ promises. They claimed loyalty, but when real sacrifice came, they would not stand firm.

Even if they appeared to help, they would eventually turn their backs. False loyalty cannot survive pressure.

This ayah teaches that sincerity is proven during difficulty. Words are easy before a test, but truth appears when cost arrives.

Allah reveals a disease in their hearts: they feared people more than they feared Allah. Their calculations were driven by human threat, not divine accountability.

This is a sign of not truly understanding. Real understanding places Allah above every creation in fear, hope, and obedience.

The ayah teaches that fear must be corrected. When people become bigger than Allah in the heart, choices become distorted.

Allah describes their weakness beneath the appearance of strength. They may seem united, but their hearts are divided.

They fight from behind protection because their courage is not rooted in faith. Their internal hostility and division weaken them from within.

This ayah teaches that unity is not just standing together physically. Real unity comes from hearts joined upon truth.

Allah compares them to others shortly before them who already tasted the consequences of their actions. History repeats when hearts repeat the same diseases.

They tasted the bitter result of their own choices. Sin and opposition may feel powerful at first, but their ending is harmful.

This ayah teaches that recent examples around us are warnings. A person of insight does not need to fall into the same pit to learn.

Allah gives the example of Shaytan: he invites the human being to disbelief, but when the person follows him, Shaytan abandons him.

This is the nature of Shaytan’s promises. He pushes people toward ruin and then disowns them when consequences arrive.

The ayah teaches not to trust the whispers that invite sin. Shaytan beautifies the path, but he will not stand with a person before Allah.

The final outcome of Shaytan and the one who follows him in disbelief is the Fire. Shaytan’s betrayal does not save him, and the human’s excuse does not save the human.

Wrongdoing has consequences. Following evil callers does not remove personal responsibility.

This ayah teaches that the end matters. The believer must judge invitations by where they lead, not by how attractive they sound at the beginning.

This is one of the strongest calls to self-accountability in the Qur’an. Allah tells every believer to fear Him and look carefully at what they have prepared for tomorrow.

Tomorrow here points to the Hereafter. Every deed is something sent ahead, waiting for the servant when they meet Allah.

The ayah teaches daily review. A believer should not live randomly; they should ask what their prayers, words, money, habits, and intentions are sending forward.

Allah warns believers not to become like those who forgot Him. When people forget Allah, they lose their true understanding of themselves.

They may know their desires, careers, images, and plans, but forget their soul, purpose, accountability, and return to Allah.

This ayah teaches that remembrance of Allah is the foundation of self-knowledge. Without Allah, a person becomes a stranger to their own soul.

Allah makes the final contrast clear: the companions of the Fire and the companions of Paradise are not equal.

In the world, people may confuse success with money, comfort, fame, or power. Allah defines success by the final destination.

This ayah teaches that the only real winners are the people of Paradise. Every life choice should be measured by which destination it leads toward.

Allah gives a powerful image: if this Qur’an were sent upon a mountain, the mountain would humble itself and split from fear of Allah.

A mountain is hard, massive, and firm, yet the weight of the Qur’an would make it tremble. The question then turns to the human heart: why does it remain hard?

This ayah teaches that the Qur’an should soften and shake the heart. If it does not move us, we need to ask Allah to revive our khushoo‘.

Allah now introduces a series of His majestic names. He is Allah, the only One worthy of worship. Nothing else deserves the heart’s ultimate love, fear, obedience, and reliance.

He knows the unseen and the witnessed. What is hidden from creation and what is visible in front of them are equally known to Him.

He is Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem. The One who knows everything about us is also the Most Merciful, calling us back through guidance.

Allah lists names that fill the heart with awe. He is the King, the Most Holy, the Source of peace, the Giver of security, the Guardian over all, the Almighty, the Compeller, and the Supreme.

These names correct the heart’s view of power. No ruler, system, weapon, fortress, or fear is above Allah.

The ayah ends by declaring Allah far above what people associate with Him. Knowing these names should remove shirk, arrogance, and false reliance from the heart.

Surah Al-Hashr ends with Allah’s names connected to creation: He is the Creator, the Originator, and the Fashioner. Every form, face, world, and detail exists by His design.

To Him belong the most beautiful names. Knowing Allah through His names is one of the greatest ways to build love, fear, hope, and trust.

The surah closes where it began: everything in the heavens and earth glorifies Allah. The believer’s journey through the surah ends in tasbeeh, awe, and surrender to the Almighty, the All-Wise.
