The Prophets
ٱقْتَرَبَ لِلنَّاسِ حِسَابُهُمْ وَهُمْ فِى غَفْلَةٍۢ مُّعْرِضُونَ ١
Iqtaraba lin-nasi hisabuhum wa hum fi ghaflatim-mu‘ridun.
The account of the people has drawn near, while they are in heedlessness, turning away.

Allah begins Surah Al-Anbiya with a strong wake-up call. The Day of Account is coming closer for every person, but many people live as if they will never be questioned.

مَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن ذِكْرٍۢ مِّن رَّبِّهِم مُّحْدَثٍ إِلَّا ٱسْتَمَعُوهُ وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ ٢
Ma ya’tihim min dhikrim-mir-Rabbihim muhdathin illas-tama‘uhu wa hum yal‘abun.
No renewed reminder comes to them from their Lord except that they listen to it while they are playing.

لَاهِيَةًۭ قُلُوبُهُمْ ۗ وَأَسَرُّوا۟ ٱلنَّجْوَى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ هَلْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا بَشَرٌۭ مِّثْلُكُمْ ۖ أَفَتَأْتُونَ ٱلسِّحْرَ وَأَنتُمْ تُبْصِرُونَ ٣
Lahiyatan qulubuhum, wa asarrun-najwal-ladhina zalamu hal hadha illa basharum-mithlukum, afata’tunas-sihr wa antum tubsiriun.
Their hearts are distracted. And those who wronged kept their private conversation secret, saying, “Is this not only a human being like you? So will you come to magic while you can see?”

قَالَ رَبِّى يَعْلَمُ ٱلْقَوْلَ فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٤
Qala Rabbi ya‘lamul-qawla fis-sama’i wal-ard, wa Huwas-Sami‘ul-‘Alim.
He said, “My Lord knows every word in the heaven and the earth, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”

بَلْ قَالُوٓا۟ أَضْغَـٰثُ أَحْلَـٰمٍۭ بَلِ ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ بَلْ هُوَ شَاعِرٌۭ فَلْيَأْتِنَا بِـَٔايَةٍۢ كَمَآ أُرْسِلَ ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ ٥
Bal qalu adghathu ahlamim-baliftarah, bal huwa sha‘irun falya’tina bi’ayatin kama ursilal-awwalun.
Rather, they said, “Confused dreams.” Rather, “He invented it.” Rather, “He is a poet.” So let him bring us a sign as the former messengers were sent with.

Ma amanat qablahum min qaryatin ahlaknaha, afahum yu’minun.
No town before them that We destroyed believed. So will they believe?

وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَكَ إِلَّا رِجَالًۭا نُّوحِىٓ إِلَيْهِمْ ۖ فَسْـَٔلُوٓا۟ أَهْلَ ٱلذِّكْرِ إِن كُنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ٧
Wa ma arsalna qablaka illa rijalan nuhi ilaihim, fas’alu ahladh-dhikri in kuntum la ta‘lamun.
And We did not send before you except men to whom We revealed. So ask the people of knowledge if you do not know.

وَمَا جَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ جَسَدًۭا لَّا يَأْكُلُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ خَـٰلِدِينَ ٨
Wa ma ja‘alnahum jasadal-la ya’kulunat-ta‘ama wa ma kanu khalidin.
And We did not make them bodies that did not eat food, nor were they immortal.

ثُمَّ صَدَقْنَـٰهُمُ ٱلْوَعْدَ فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُمْ وَمَن نَّشَآءُ وَأَهْلَكْنَا ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ ٩
Thumma sadaqnahumul-wa‘da fa anjainahum wa man nasha’u wa ahlaknal-musrifin.
Then We fulfilled for them the promise, so We saved them and whom We willed, and We destroyed the transgressors.

Laqad anzalna ilaikum kitabam fihi dhikrukum, afala ta‘qilun.
We have certainly sent down to you a Book in which is your reminder. So will you not understand?

وَكَمْ قَصَمْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍۢ كَانَتْ ظَالِمَةًۭ وَأَنشَأْنَا بَعْدَهَا قَوْمًا ءَاخَرِينَ ١١
Wa kam qasamna min qaryatin kanat zalimatan wa ansha’na ba‘daha qawman akharin.
And how many towns We shattered that were wrongdoing, and We brought into being after them another people.

فَلَمَّآ أَحَسُّوا۟ بَأْسَنَآ إِذَا هُم مِّنْهَا يَرْكُضُونَ ١٢
Falamma ahassu ba’sana idha hum minha yarkudun.
Then when they sensed Our punishment, suddenly they were fleeing from it.

لَا تَرْكُضُوا۟ وَٱرْجِعُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ مَآ أُتْرِفْتُمْ فِيهِ وَمَسَـٰكِنِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُسْـَٔلُونَ ١٣
La tarkudu warji‘u ila ma utriftum fihi wa masakinikum la‘allakum tus’alun.
“Do not flee, but return to what luxury you were given and to your homes, so that you may be questioned.”

Have those who disbelieved not seen that the heavens and the earth were joined together, then We split them apart, and We made from water every living thing? Will they not then believe?

And when those who disbelieve see you, they take you only in mockery, saying, “Is this the one who mentions your gods?” And they are, at the mention of the Most Merciful, disbelievers.

Law ya‘lamul-ladhina kafaru hina la yakuffuna ‘an wujuhihimun-nara wa la ‘an zuhurihim wa la hum yunsarun.
If only those who disbelieved knew the time when they will not be able to keep the Fire away from their faces or from their backs, nor will they be helped.

Wa laqadis-tuhzi’a birusulim-min qablika fahaqa bil-ladhina sakhiru minhum ma kanu bihi yastahzi’un.
And messengers before you were certainly mocked, but those who ridiculed them were surrounded by what they used to mock.

Bal matta‘na ha’ula’i wa aba’ahum hatta tala ‘alaihimul-‘umur, afala yarawna anna na’til-arda nanqusuha min atrafiha, afahumul-ghalibun.
Rather, We gave enjoyment to these and their fathers until life became long for them. Do they not see that We come to the land, reducing it from its edges? So are they the ones who will overcome?

Wa nada‘ul-mawazinal-qista liyawmil-qiyamati fala tuzlamu nafsun shai’a, wa in kana mithqala habbatim-min khardalin ataina biha, wa kafa bina hasibin.
And We will place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be wronged at all. And even if it is the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountants.

And We certainly gave Musa and Harun the criterion, a light, and a reminder for the people of taqwa.

And We had certainly given Ibrahim his sound judgment before, and We were knowing of him.

فَرَجَعُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ فَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّكُمْ أَنتُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ٦٤
Faraja‘u ila anfusihim faqalu innakum antumuz-zalimun.
So they returned to themselves and said, “Indeed, you yourselves are the wrongdoers.”

Wa Lutan atainahu hukmaw-wa ‘ilmaw-wa najjainahu minal-qaryatil-lati kanat ta‘malul-khaba’ith, innahum kanu qawma saw’in fasiqin.
And Lut, We gave him judgment and knowledge, and We saved him from the town that used to commit wicked deeds. Indeed, they were an evil, defiantly disobedient people.

And We supported him against the people who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were an evil people, so We drowned them all together.

And Dawud and Sulayman, when they judged concerning the field, when the sheep of a people had grazed in it by night, and We were witness to their judgment.

Fa fahhamnaha Sulaiman, wa kullan ataina hukmaw-wa ‘ilma, wa sakhkharna ma‘a Dawudal-jibala yusabbihna wat-tair, wa kunna fa‘ilin.
So We gave understanding of it to Sulayman, and to each We gave judgment and knowledge. And We subjected the mountains to glorify with Dawud, and the birds as well; and We were the Doer.

Wa li Sulaimanar-riha ‘asifatan tajri bi amrihi ilal-ardil-lati barakna fiha, wa kunna bikulli shai’in ‘alimin.
And to Sulayman We subjected the strong wind, blowing by his command toward the land which We had blessed. And We were knowing of all things.

Wa minash-shayatini may-yaghusuna lahu wa ya‘maluna ‘amalan duna dhalik, wa kunna lahum hafizin.
And among the devils were those who would dive for him and do work other than that. And We were guarding them.

وَذَا ٱلنُّونِ إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَـٰضِبًۭا فَظَنَّ أَن لَّن نَّقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ فَنَادَىٰ فِى ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ أَن لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ ٨٧
Wa Dhan-Nuni idh dhahaba mughadiban fazanna an lan naqdira ‘alaihi fanada fiz-zulumati an la ilaha illa Anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin.
And Dhun-Nun, when he went away in anger and thought that We would not restrict him, then he called out in the darknesses: “There is no god worthy of worship except You. Exalted are You. Indeed, I was among the wrongdoers.”

| لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ | La ilaha illa Anta | There is no god worthy of worship except You. |

Simple Explanation
Dhun-Nun refers to Yunus عليه السلام. He left his people in anger before Allah gave him permission to leave. Allah then tested him, and he found himself in layers of darkness: the darkness of the night, the sea, and the belly of the fish.

Waqtarabal-wa‘dul-haqqu fa idha hiya shakhisatun absarul-ladhina kafaru, ya wailana qad kunna fi ghaflatim-min hadha bal kunna zalimin.
And the true promise will draw near, then suddenly the eyes of those who disbelieved will stare fixedly. “Woe to us! We were certainly heedless of this. Rather, we were wrongdoers.”

لَوْ كَانَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ءَالِهَةًۭ مَّا وَرَدُوهَا ۖ وَكُلٌّۭ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ٩٩
Law kana ha’ula’i alihatam-ma waraduha, wa kullun fiha khalidun.
If these had truly been gods, they would not have entered it. And all will remain there forever.

But if they turn away, then say, “I have announced to you all equally. And I do not know whether what you are promised is near or far.”

This means comfort, delay, and worldly enjoyment are not always signs of Allah’s approval. They can be tests. A person may be given time, but that time is not endless.
The ayah teaches that dunya enjoyment should never make us careless. If Allah gives time, health, money, or ease, the wise person uses it to repent, obey, and prepare before the appointed time arrives.

قَـٰلَ رَبِّ ٱحْكُم بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ وَرَبُّنَا ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ ٱلْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ ١١٢
Qala Rabbihkum bil-haqq, wa Rabbunar-Rahmanul-musta‘anu ‘ala ma tasifun.
He said, “My Lord, judge with truth. And our Lord is the Most Merciful, the One whose help is sought against what you describe.”

Simple Explanation
The surah ends with a powerful dua: “My Lord, judge with truth.” After warnings, arguments, mockery, rejection, and false claims, the final judgment belongs to Allah alone.
The Prophet ﷺ is taught to place the matter before Allah. Allah is Ar-Rahman, the Most Merciful, and He is the One whose help is sought against the false descriptions and accusations of people.
This ending teaches calm strength. When people distort truth, mock faith, or describe Allah and His message falsely, the believer seeks Allah’s help and trusts His judgment.
