What is Muharram?

• Muharram is the first month of the Hijri calendar. The Islamic year begins with Muharram, but the month itself is not treated as an Eid, festival, or fixed annual celebration in the authentic Sunnah.
• Muharram is one of the four sacred months. Allah says that the year has twelve months, and four of them are sacred. The Prophet ﷺ named them as Dhul Qa‘dah, Dhul Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab.Reference: Qur’an 9:36; Sahih al-Bukhari 3197.
• It is called the month of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ described Muharram as “Allah’s month” when speaking about the virtue of fasting in it.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1163a.
• Sacred means extra caution. Allah said, “Do not wrong yourselves during them.” So a believer should be more careful with sins, injustice, arguments, oppression, and careless worship in Muharram.Reference: Qur’an 9:36.

What is Ashura?

• Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram. The name is linked to the number ten, and in Islamic practice it refers to the tenth of Muharram.
• Ashura is connected to Musa عليه السلام. When the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah, he found the Jews fasting Ashura. They said it was the day Allah saved Musa عليه السلام and drowned the people of Fir‘awn. The Prophet ﷺ said that Muslims are closer to Musa عليه السلام, so he fasted and commanded fasting.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 3397; Sahih Muslim 1130.
• Before Ramadan became obligatory, Ashura fasting had a stronger status. After Ramadan fasting was prescribed, Ashura became voluntary. The reward remained great, but it was no longer compulsory.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1892 and Sahih al-Bukhari 1893.
• Fasting Ashura wipes away the sins of the previous year. This refers to minor sins according to the explanation of scholars; major sins require sincere tawbah, and people’s rights must be restored.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1162b.

Why do Muslims fast Ashura?

• We fast because the Prophet ﷺ fasted it. The strongest reason is not culture, tribe, country, or family habit. It is Sunnah.
• We fast as gratitude to Allah. Musa عليه السلام fasted in thankfulness when Allah saved him and his people. The Prophet ﷺ affirmed that the believers have a strong connection to Musa عليه السلام and his message of tawhid.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 3397.
• We fast because it brings forgiveness. The Prophet ﷺ said fasting Ashura expiates the previous year.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1162b.
• We fast with Islamic identity. The Prophet ﷺ intended to add the ninth day with Ashura, so Muslims would not copy the exact form of other communities.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1134a.

How Ashura forgives sins

• The hadith gives a real promise. The Prophet ﷺ said fasting Ashura expiates the previous year.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1162b.
• Scholars explain this primarily as minor sins. Major sins require tawbah: stopping the sin, regretting it, resolving not to return, and restoring people’s rights where rights were taken.
• Fasting is not a trick to keep sinning. A person should not fast Ashura while planning to continue haram without repentance. Worship should break sin, not perfume it.
• Rights of people are serious. If money, honour, safety, or trust was violated, the servant should repair what is possible. Voluntary fasting does not turn injustice into dust.
• Allah’s mercy is vast. A believer should fast with hope, humility, and the intention to start the year cleaner than before.

Duas to make in Muharram and Ashura

Muharram is not an Eid

• The Islamic year beginning is not a third Eid. Muslims have two annual Eids: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Muharram is honoured through worship, not invented festival practices.
• Do not invent “New Year worship” as if it is Sunnah. Praying, fasting, making dua, giving charity, and repenting are always good, but assigning fixed special formulas or guaranteed rewards needs evidence.
• Good greetings are allowed as general kindness. Saying a general dua like “May Allah make this year blessed” is not the same as claiming a special prophetic ritual.
• Do not imitate non-Islamic excess. A sacred month should not begin with waste, display, neglect of salah, or sin wrapped in “celebration” paper.

Karbala and Ashura: what to understand carefully

• Al-Husayn ibn Ali رضي الله عنهما is from the beloved family of the Prophet ﷺ. Loving him and honouring the Ahl al-Bayt is part of the respect and love a Muslim carries for the Prophet ﷺ.
• The tragedy of Karbala occurred on Ashura in 61 AH. This was a painful event in Muslim history, and the martyrdom of al-Husayn رضي الله عنه is not treated lightly by sincere believers.
• But Ashura fasting was already established before Karbala. The Prophet ﷺ fasted Ashura and taught its virtue long before that later historical tragedy. So the Sunnah fast of Ashura is linked to Musa عليه السلام and gratitude to Allah.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 3397; Sahih Muslim 1162b.
• Do not turn grief into forbidden actions. Islam teaches patience, truth, justice, dua, and love for the righteous, not self-harm, false stories, cursing, sectarian abuse, or rituals without evidence.
• Do not turn Ashura into a party either. Some people react to one extreme by making another. The balanced path is Sunnah fasting, gratitude, repentance, and respectful remembrance without invented practices.

Common wrong claims about Muharram and Ashura

• Claim: “You must fast the whole month of Muharram.” Not correct. Fasting more in Muharram is excellent, but the whole month is not obligatory. Ashura is especially emphasised as a voluntary fast.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1163a; Sahih Muslim 1162b.
• Claim: “Ashura is only about Karbala.” Not correct. Karbala happened later. The Prophet’s ﷺ teaching on Ashura is connected to Musa عليه السلام and fasting in gratitude.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 3397.
• Claim: “Ashura fasting forgives every sin with no repentance.” Not correct. The hadith promises expiation, while major sins and people’s rights require sincere tawbah and repair.
• Claim: “There is a compulsory Muharram dua.” Not proven. Make sincere duas, especially Qur’anic and authentic duas, but do not invent a fixed ritual.
• Claim: “Spending extra on family on Ashura is definitely authentic.” Reports about this are discussed by scholars, and many do not treat them like the clear authentic hadith on fasting. Do not present doubtful material as equal to Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
• Claim: “You cannot fast only the 10th.” Not correct. Fasting only the 10th is valid, though adding the 9th is better when possible.
• Claim: “Muharram is unlucky for marriage, travel, business, or moving home.” This is superstition. Muharram is sacred, not cursed.
• Claim: “The first ten days of Muharram are like the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.” The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah have specific virtues. Muharram has its own virtue, especially fasting and Ashura, but do not merge separate rulings.

Etiquette of a sacred month

• Guard salah. A sacred month should not pass while prayers are treated casually.
• Fast if able. Fast Ashura and add the ninth when possible. Also consider extra voluntary fasts in Muharram according to your strength.
• Make tawbah early in the year. Begin with repentance before sins become old furniture in the heart.
• Avoid wronging people. Qur’an 9:36 specifically warns against wronging yourselves in sacred months, and harming people is a serious way of wronging the soul.
• Lower the temperature of arguments. Sacred time is not only about more worship; it is also about less poison from the tongue.
• Give charity quietly. Charity is always good, especially when it softens the heart and helps people without display.
• Read the story of Musa عليه السلام with reflection. Ashura is not just a date. It is a reminder that Allah’s help can arrive from a direction no one predicted.

What Muharram should build in the heart

• Respect for sacred time. A Muslim does not treat all days as spiritually identical when Allah has honoured certain times.
• Hope in Allah’s rescue. Ashura teaches that the sea can become a road when Allah wills.
• Gratitude after difficulty. Musa عليه السلام fasted in gratitude, so hardship should not erase thankfulness from the believer.
• Love for all prophets. The Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ honours Musa عليه السلام, Isa عليه السلام, Ibrahim عليه السلام, and all prophets without division in their message of tawhid.
• A clean beginning. Start the year by leaving at least one sin, fixing one relationship, protecting one prayer, and fasting for Allah if able.
