Hajj and the Days of Dhul Hijjah

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam for the one who is able. It is a journey of tawheed, obedience, sacrifice, patience, dua, and return to Allah. This page explains where Hajj began, how the Ka‘bah was built, how Umrah is performed, the step-by-step procedure of Hajj, important duas, etiquette, women travelling for Hajj, and what it means when authentic hadith mention sins being forgiven after an accepted Hajj.

Hajj is a pillar of Islam

  • Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for the Muslim who is able. Ability includes Islam, sanity, maturity, physical ability, financial ability, safe travel, and the ability to leave dependents with what they need.Reference: Qur’an 3:97 mentions Hajj to the House as a duty upon people for the one who is able to find a way to it. Sahih al-Bukhari 8 and Sahih Muslim 16 mention Hajj among the five pillars of Islam.
  • Hajj is not only a trip to Makkah. It is worship with fixed times, places, actions, limits, and manners. A pilgrim follows revelation, not personal invention.Reference: Qur’an 2:197 mentions the known months of Hajj and the command to avoid obscenity, sin, and quarrelling during Hajj.
  • The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught the final form of Hajj. During the Farewell Hajj in 10 AH, he showed the Ummah how the rites should be performed and said to learn the rites from him.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1297 mentions the Prophet ﷺ saying, “Learn your rituals from me,” while performing Hajj rites.
  • Hajj must be done sincerely. The body may travel to Makkah, but the heart must travel to Allah through tawheed, repentance, humility, patience, and obedience.

How Hajj started and who first performed it

  • The strongest clear foundation is the story of Ibrahim عليه السلام. Allah commanded Ibrahim عليه السلام to proclaim Hajj to people, and people would come from distant paths.Reference: Qur’an 22:27.
  • The Qur’an confirms that the first House established for humanity is at Bakkah. Bakkah is Makkah. The Ka‘bah is described as blessed and guidance for the worlds.Reference: Qur’an 3:96.
  • Ibrahim and Ismail عليهما السلام raised the foundations of the House. While building, they made dua asking Allah to accept from them.Reference: Qur’an 2:127.
  • Some historical reports mention worship at the House before Ibrahim عليه السلام. But the Qur’an gives us the clear confirmed point: Ibrahim عليه السلام and Ismail عليهما السلام raised the foundations, purified the House, and Ibrahim عليه السلام was commanded to call people to Hajj. Do not present unsupported details as certain.
  • The Hajj known to Muslims was purified through Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Pre-Islamic practices had been mixed with shirk, tribal boasting, and wrong customs. Islam returned Hajj to tawheed, modesty, remembrance, sacrifice, and obedience.
Simple answer: The Qur’an clearly connects the beginning of the public call to Hajj with Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام. The final complete way Muslims perform Hajj is learned from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The building of the Ka‘bah

  • The Ka‘bah is called the first House established for humanity. It is not worshipped. Muslims worship Allah alone, and the Ka‘bah is the qiblah and sacred House connected to tawheed.Reference: Qur’an 3:96 and Qur’an 2:144.
  • Allah made the House a place of return and safety. Ibrahim and Ismail عليهما السلام were commanded to purify it for those who make tawaf, stay in devotion, bow, and prostrate.Reference: Qur’an 2:125.
  • Ibrahim and Ismail عليهما السلام raised the foundations. Their dua while building teaches that even the greatest acts of worship need Allah’s acceptance.Reference: Qur’an 2:127: “Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”
  • The story of Hajar عليها السلام and Ismail عليه السلام is tied to Makkah. Ibrahim عليه السلام left them by the House by Allah’s command, Zamzam was provided, and later Ibrahim and Ismail عليهما السلام raised the foundations of the Ka‘bah.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 3364 narrates the long report about Hajar عليها السلام, Zamzam, and the building of the House.
  • Maqam Ibrahim is connected to this building. Allah mentions taking the standing place of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.Reference: Qur’an 2:125.

Hajj months and the sacred days

Time What happens Main reminder
Shawwal, Dhul Qa‘dah, early Dhul Hijjah These are the known months of Hajj. A person may enter Hajj ihram during these months according to the rules of the Hajj type chosen. Reference: Qur’an 2:197.
First ten days of Dhul Hijjah Among the best days for righteous deeds: salah, dhikr, fasting for non-pilgrims, charity, Qur’an, sacrifice, and repentance. Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 969 mentions the virtue of righteous deeds in these days.
8 Dhul Hijjah Yawm at-Tarwiyah. Pilgrims enter Hajj ihram if needed and go to Mina. Begin with calm, intention, talbiyah, and patience.
9 Dhul Hijjah Day of Arafah. Standing at Arafah is the heart of Hajj. Reference: Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 889 reports “Hajj is Arafah.”
10 Dhul Hijjah Yawm an-Nahr and Eid al-Adha. Stoning, sacrifice, shaving/trimming, Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa‘i occur according to the pilgrim’s situation. The order has ease in many cases, but learn your exact Hajj type.
11, 12, 13 Dhul Hijjah Days of Tashreeq in Mina. Pilgrims stone the three jamarat and remember Allah. Reference: Sahih Muslim 1141a calls these days days of eating, drinking, and remembrance of Allah.
Do not fast on Eid al-Adha and the Days of Tashreeq. These days are for eating, drinking, sacrifice, gratitude, and dhikr. The exception discussed by scholars is for a pilgrim doing Tamattu‘ or Qiran who cannot offer the sacrifice and must fast according to the known rule.

The three types of Hajj

Type What it means Who usually does it?
Tamattu‘ Perform Umrah first in the months of Hajj, exit ihram, then enter ihram again for Hajj on 8 Dhul Hijjah. Sacrifice is due for the one able. Common for many international pilgrims because it separates Umrah and Hajj clearly.
Qiran Combine Umrah and Hajj in one ihram. The pilgrim remains in ihram until the Hajj release. Sacrifice is due for the one able. Chosen by some pilgrims who bring or arrange sacrifice and remain in ihram.
Ifrad Perform Hajj only. No Umrah is included in that ihram. Sacrifice is not required because of Ifrad itself. Often easier for people living near Makkah or those guided to do it by their group.
Most simple guide for first-time pilgrims: Learn the exact type your Hajj group is performing. Many mistakes happen because a person reads Tamattu‘ rules while their group is doing Ifrad or Qiran.

Umrah section: how Umrah is performed

  • 1. Prepare before the miqat. Bathe if possible, clean yourself, wear ihram clothing if you are male, and prepare the heart with repentance and intention. Women wear normal modest clothing and do not wear a special white uniform.
  • 2. Enter ihram at or before the miqat. Make the intention for Umrah in the heart and say the wording of entering Umrah if needed: Allahumma labbayka ‘umrah, meaning: O Allah, here I am for Umrah.
  • 3. Recite the talbiyah often. Continue saying it until you begin Tawaf. Men raise the voice; women say it quietly enough for themselves.
  • 4. Perform Tawaf around the Ka‘bah seven times. Start from the Black Stone line, keep the Ka‘bah on your left, and complete seven circuits. Do not push, harm people, or fight to touch the Black Stone.
  • 5. Pray two rak‘ahs after Tawaf if possible. Pray behind Maqam Ibrahim if easy and safe. If crowded, pray anywhere in the masjid. Do not block people.
  • 6. Drink Zamzam and make dua. Drink with gratitude and ask Allah for beneficial knowledge, healing, provision, and acceptance.
  • 7. Perform Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah seven lengths. Start at Safa and end at Marwah. Safa to Marwah is one, Marwah to Safa is two, until seven are completed.
  • 8. Shave or trim the hair. Men shave or trim, and shaving has greater reward. Women trim a small portion from the ends of their hair. After this, Umrah is complete and the pilgrim exits ihram.
Umrah has no fixed date like Hajj. It can be done at different times of the year, but Umrah performed before Hajj as part of Tamattu‘ must be understood with the Hajj group’s plan.

Step-by-step Hajj procedure

Step What to do Important reminder
Before Hajj Repent, pay debts if due, seek forgiveness from people you harmed, learn your Hajj type, pack simply, and keep documents safe. Hajj begins before the flight. The suitcase travels later; the heart should travel first.
Ihram Enter the state of ihram from the miqat or before passing it. Make intention for your Hajj type and recite talbiyah. Avoid perfume, cutting hair/nails, marital relations, hunting, and other ihram restrictions after entering ihram.
8 Dhul Hijjah: Mina Go to Mina in ihram. Pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr there according to the Hajj arrangement. Use this day for talbiyah, calmness, and preparing for Arafah.
9 Dhul Hijjah: Arafah Stand at Arafah after midday until sunset. Pray, make dua, repent, and remember Allah. This is the heart of Hajj. Missing Arafah means missing Hajj. Reference: Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 889.
Night of 10 Dhul Hijjah: Muzdalifah Leave Arafah after sunset with calmness. Pray Maghrib and Isha in Muzdalifah, rest, remember Allah, and collect pebbles if needed. Do not turn the night into panic. Follow group movement and avoid harming others.
10 Dhul Hijjah: Jamrah Stone Jamrat al-‘Aqabah with seven pebbles, saying Allahu Akbar with each throw. The stones are small pebbles, not angry rocks. This is worship, not violence.
Sacrifice For Tamattu‘ and Qiran, sacrifice is due for the one able. Usually the Hajj authority or approved service arranges it. If unable, fasting rules apply. Learn this before Hajj, not after confusion begins.
Hair Men shave or trim. Women trim a small portion from the ends of the hair. This brings the first release from many ihram restrictions. Do not cut before its correct time. Women do not shave their heads.
Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa‘i Perform Tawaf al-Ifadah in Makkah, then Sa‘i if it is due for your Hajj type and situation. Tawaf al-Ifadah is an essential pillar of Hajj. Do not leave without completing it.
11 and 12 Dhul Hijjah: Mina Stay in Mina and stone the three jamarat after zawal according to group timing. The order is small, middle, then large. Make dua after the first and middle jamrah where possible. Do not make drama at the jamarat.
Leaving on 12 or staying to 13 A pilgrim may leave Mina on 12 Dhul Hijjah if leaving within the proper time, or stay and stone again on 13 Dhul Hijjah. Both are allowed. Follow your group and do not create hardship.
Tawaf al-Wada‘ Before leaving Makkah, perform the farewell Tawaf unless excused, such as a menstruating woman according to the authentic concession. Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1755 and Sahih Muslim 1328 mention the farewell Tawaf and the concession for menstruating women.

Important duas and dhikr for Hajj and Umrah

Transliteration: Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka Antas-Sami‘ul-‘Alim.

Meaning: Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

When: After worship, during Hajj, after Tawaf, after sacrifice, and whenever asking Allah for acceptance.

Source: Qur’an 2:127.

Between the Yemeni Corner and Black Stone

Meaning: Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

When: Commonly recited between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone during Tawaf.

Source: Qur’an 2:201; Sunan Abi Dawud 1892 reports its recitation in Tawaf.

At Safa and Marwah

Meaning: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs dominion and praise, and He has power over all things.

When: At Safa and Marwah, while facing the qiblah and making dua.

Source: Sahih Muslim 1218a describes the Prophet’s ﷺ dhikr and dua at Safa and Marwah.

Dua of Arafah

Meaning: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs dominion and praise, and He has power over all things.

When: On the Day of Arafah, with much personal dua.

Source: Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3585 reports this among the best words said by the Prophet ﷺ and the prophets before him on Arafah.

Ask for repentance and mercy

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا وَإِنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ

Transliteration: Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa in lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakunanna minal-khasirin.

Meaning: Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.

When: During Arafah, Tawaf, Sa‘i, Mina, and any moment of repentance.

Source: Qur’an 7:23.

No fixed dua for every Tawaf circuit is required. A pilgrim may recite Qur’an, make dhikr, and make personal dua in any language. Do not think a printed booklet’s seven-circuit duas are compulsory.

Etiquette of Hajj and Umrah

  • Guard tawheed. Do not call upon the Ka‘bah, the Black Stone, graves, people, or objects. Dua is for Allah alone.
  • Guard the tongue. Hajj is not a place for shouting, insulting, gossip, lying, complaining all day, or fighting over space.Reference: Qur’an 2:197 commands the pilgrim to avoid obscenity, sin, and quarrelling.
  • Do not harm people for a Sunnah act. Kissing the Black Stone is Sunnah when possible, but pushing, elbowing, or hurting people is not piety.
  • Follow crowd control and group instructions. Hajj has millions of people. Discipline can become worship when it protects life, safety, and calm.
  • Be gentle with elderly pilgrims. Give space, lower the ego, help others, and remember that a tired pilgrim may be carrying a lifetime of dua.
  • Keep modesty. Men and women should lower the gaze, avoid unnecessary mixing, and keep clothing modest and clean.
  • Avoid photography obsession. Recording every second can steal the heart from dua. Take what is needed, but do not turn worship into a travel show.
  • Learn before going. Do not depend only on hearsay in the hotel lobby. Study your Hajj type and ask reliable scholars or trained guides.

Ihram rules in simple points

Area Rule Reminder
Perfume Do not apply perfume after entering ihram. Before ihram, perfume is mentioned in authentic reports for men before entering ihram, not after it begins.
Hair and nails Do not cut hair or nails after entering ihram until release. Trim before ihram if needed.
Marital relations Not allowed during ihram. Sexual speech and actions are also to be avoided. Reference: Qur’an 2:197.
Men’s clothing Men wear two unstitched cloths and avoid normal fitted clothing, head covering, and covered footwear according to ihram rules. Ask your scholar about belts, sandals, medical needs, and exceptions.
Women’s clothing Women wear normal modest clothing. They do not wear niqab or gloves in ihram, but may cover the face when needed in the presence of non-mahram men according to scholarly explanation. There is no special white dress required for women.
Arguments Quarrelling is forbidden in spirit and wording during Hajj. The real test may be the bus queue, not the mountain.
Mistakes If a mistake happens, do not guess the penalty. Ask a scholar with the exact details. Hajj rulings have differences and details. Precision matters.

Women performing Hajj without a mahram

  • The hadith about a woman travelling with a mahram is authentic and serious. The Prophet ﷺ said that a woman should not travel except with a mahram, and when a man mentioned that his wife had gone for Hajj while he was assigned elsewhere, the Prophet ﷺ told him to go and perform Hajj with his wife.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim wording is quoted in Riyad as-Salihin 990 and similar narrations.
  • Scholars differed on the obligatory Hajj case. Some scholars require a mahram for Hajj travel. Other scholars allow a woman to perform the obligatory Hajj with trustworthy safe company when safety is established.
  • The stricter view is common in Hanafi and Hanbali fiqh. It treats the mahram condition as general for travel, including Hajj and Umrah.
  • The allowance with safe company is known in Maliki and Shafi‘i discussions and among many contemporary fatwa bodies. This is usually discussed for obligatory Hajj, not casual unsafe travel.
  • A woman should not make this decision from social media comments. She should ask a trusted scholar according to the fiqh she follows, her safety, her age, her group, her country’s Hajj rules, and her family situation.
Balanced wording for the page: A mahram is strongly established in authentic hadith, while some scholars allow obligatory Hajj with safe trustworthy company. The reader should follow qualified guidance and not treat the issue casually.

Which sins are washed away after Hajj?

  • An accepted Hajj has an enormous reward. The Prophet ﷺ said that the reward of Hajj Mabrur is nothing except Paradise.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1773 and Sahih Muslim 1349.
  • Hajj performed sincerely and properly brings forgiveness. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever performs Hajj for Allah, avoids marital relations and sin, returns like the day his mother gave birth to him.Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1521 and Sahih Muslim 1350.
  • This is not a license to plan sins before or after Hajj. A person cannot say, “I will oppress people, then Hajj will erase it.” That is not repentance; that is playing with worship.
  • Rights of people must be returned. If someone stole, cheated, slandered, abused, withheld money, or broke a trust, they must repent to Allah and also fix the right of the person as much as possible.
  • Major sins require sincere tawbah. Hajj is a great door of forgiveness, but the pilgrim should go with repentance, regret, stopping the sin, and firm intention not to return to it.
  • A sign of accepted Hajj is change after Hajj. More salah, cleaner income, softer tongue, better hijab/modesty, more honesty, more mercy, and less arrogance are all signs of a heart that brought Hajj home.

Day of Arafah: the heart of Hajj

  • Standing at Arafah is essential. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Hajj is Arafah.” A pilgrim must be within Arafah at the required time.Reference: Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 889 and Sunan an-Nasa’i 3016.
  • Arafah is a day of dua. Do not spend it sleeping unnecessarily, scrolling, chatting, or filming. Raise your hands, confess your need, and ask Allah with humility.
  • Ask for everything good. Tawheed, forgiveness, Jannah, protection from the Fire, accepted salah, halal rizq, guidance, family rectification, healing, good ending, and steadfastness.
  • Non-pilgrims may fast the Day of Arafah. It is highly virtuous for those not performing Hajj. Pilgrims at Arafah generally do not fast so they have strength for dua and worship.Reference: Sahih Muslim 1162a mentions the reward of fasting Arafah for non-pilgrims. Sahih al-Bukhari 1988 mentions the Prophet ﷺ not fasting at Arafah during Hajj.

Eid al-Adha and sacrifice during Hajj

  • 10 Dhul Hijjah is Yawm an-Nahr and Eid al-Adha. For pilgrims, it is a day of major Hajj rites. For Muslims outside Hajj, it is Eid, prayer, sacrifice for those able, gratitude, and remembrance.
  • Sacrifice is connected to obedience, not meat alone. Allah says that neither the meat nor the blood reaches Him, but taqwa reaches Him.Reference: Qur’an 22:37.
  • Pilgrims doing Tamattu‘ or Qiran have the Hajj sacrifice. If they cannot offer it, the Qur’an mentions fasting three days during Hajj and seven after returning, making ten in total.Reference: Qur’an 2:196.
  • The Days of Tashreeq are days of dhikr. After Eid, the pilgrim continues stoning in Mina and remembering Allah in the appointed days.Reference: Qur’an 2:203 and Sahih Muslim 1141a.

Common mistakes and wrong claims

  • Claim: “Hajj erases everything, even unpaid rights of people, without fixing anything.” Wrong. Hajj is a mighty door of forgiveness, but oppression and people’s rights must be corrected.
  • Claim: “Every Tawaf round has a compulsory special dua.” Wrong. There are authentic duas and dhikr, but no compulsory fixed booklet formula for every round.
  • Claim: “Touching the Ka‘bah or Black Stone is worth harming people.” Wrong. Do not push, fight, scream, or harm pilgrims for something you cannot do safely.
  • Claim: “Women must wear white ihram like men.” Wrong. Women wear normal modest clothing and follow women’s ihram rules.
  • Claim: “Arafah is just a sightseeing mountain.” Wrong. The worship is standing within Arafah and making dua. Do not treat it like a tourist stop.
  • Claim: “Bigger stones at Jamarat are better.” Wrong. Use small pebbles. Throwing in anger or using large stones contradicts calm worship.
  • Claim: “Mina, Muzdalifah, and Arafah are optional if Tawaf is done.” Wrong. Hajj has required rites. Do not reduce Hajj to only Tawaf.
  • Claim: “Umrah and Hajj are exactly the same.” Wrong. Umrah has ihram, Tawaf, Sa‘i, and hair cutting/trimming. Hajj has fixed days and additional rites: Mina, Arafah, Muzdalifah, jamarat, sacrifice according to type, Tawaf al-Ifadah, and more.

Simple preparation checklist

Before going During Hajj After returning
Learn your Hajj type: Tamattu‘, Qiran, or Ifrad. Keep saying talbiyah and dhikr. Guard the new clean page Allah gave you.
Repent and return people’s rights. Follow your group and avoid dangerous crowd choices. Keep salah on time and improve character.
Write a dua list for Arafah. Do not waste Arafah in phones and chatter. Make a plan to leave old sins properly.
Carry simple medication and ask doctors for health issues. Be patient with heat, delays, crowds, and tiredness. Stay humble. Hajj should reduce pride, not feed it.
Pack light and keep documents secure. Ask scholars for exact mistakes instead of guessing. Keep dua for acceptance alive long after the journey.

What Hajj should build in the heart

  • Tawheed. Millions face one House but worship one Lord. The Ka‘bah unites direction; Allah alone receives worship.
  • Humility. Ihram removes fashion, status, and display. A king and a poor pilgrim stand in the same dust of need.
  • Patience. Hajj squeezes the ego through queues, heat, waiting, hunger, noise, and tired feet. That is not a side quest. That is part of the training.
  • Repentance. The pilgrim should return cleaner in salah, speech, earnings, family manners, and private life.
  • Love for the Prophets. Hajj connects the believer to Ibrahim, Ismail, Hajar, and Muhammad ﷺ through obedience, sacrifice, tawheed, and trust in Allah.
  • Hope. The hadith about Hajj Mabrur is a mercy-door. A believer should never think their sins are too large for Allah’s forgiveness when they come with sincere repentance.

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds.
