The Unseen World

The Reality of Jahannam

Jahannam is real. It is not a myth, joke, metaphor, or story used only to frighten children. Allah mentions it as a warning so hearts return to Him, leave sin, seek forgiveness, protect others from oppression, and beg Allah for safety from the Fire.

Start Here A real warning

What is Jahannam?

  • Jahannam is the Fire prepared by Allah as punishment. It is part of belief in the Hereafter and cannot be reduced to a symbol or emotion.
  • Allah warns people before punishment. The keepers of Hell will ask its people whether messengers came and warned them, and they will admit that the warning came.
  • Its mention is mercy before the Day comes. The Qur’an warns us now so that a person can repent now, change now, return stolen rights now, and leave arrogance now.
  • Do not describe Jahannam for entertainment. This topic is not horror content. It is a serious unseen reality that should create fear of Allah, hope in His mercy, and urgency to obey Him.
  • Do not despair because of this topic. The same revelation that warns us of Jahannam also opens the door of tawbah, forgiveness, mercy, and Jannah.

Gates Keepers

The gates, keepers, and guardians of Jahannam

  • Jahannam has seven gates. Allah says it has seven gates, and each gate has a designated portion.
  • People will be driven in groups. The Qur’an describes groups reaching it, its gates opening, and its keepers questioning them about the messengers who warned them.
  • The keepers are angels. They are not weak, emotional, bribable, or disobedient. They carry out Allah’s command.
  • Over Saqar are nineteen. Allah mentions the number nineteen and says the guardians of the Fire are angels.
  • Malik is mentioned by name. The people of Hell will call out to Malik asking that their Lord put an end to them, and he will answer that they will remain.
  • Do not invent gate charts. It is not safe to assign every person, country, sect, or sin to a specific gate without clear proof.

Severity Authentic hadith

The severity, heat, and depth of Jahannam

  • The Fire of this world is only one part. The Prophet ﷺ said worldly fire is one of seventy parts of the Fire of Jahannam.
  • Jahannam will be brought on the Day of Resurrection. The Prophet ﷺ described it being brought with seventy thousand reins, each rein pulled by seventy thousand angels.
  • Its depth is terrifying. In an authentic narration, the Prophet ﷺ explained a sound by saying it was a stone thrown into Hell seventy years earlier that had only then reached its bottom.
  • Its punishment differs between people. Some will be covered by the Fire more than others. Punishment is not random, because Allah does not wrong anyone.
  • The least punishment is still unbearable. The Prophet ﷺ described the least punished person as one whose punishment makes his brain boil, even though he thinks no one is punished more severely than him.
  • Do not use these narrations to make people hopeless. Use them to wake the heart, stop sin, return rights, and beg Allah for protection.

Punishment Qur’anic descriptions

What punishment is described in the Qur’an?

  • Skins replaced so punishment is tasted. Allah mentions that whenever the skins are burned, they are replaced so the punishment is tasted.
  • Garments of fire and boiling water. The Qur’an mentions garments cut out of fire and boiling water poured over heads.
  • Chains and shackles. The Qur’an mentions chains, shackles, and being seized as punishment for arrogance and rejection.
  • Black smoke and scorching heat. Some descriptions mention shade that is not cool and not comfortable.
  • No true rest. The people of Hell ask for relief, but the punishment is not removed from those for whom eternity in it has been decreed.
  • The worst loss is Allah’s anger and distance. The physical descriptions are terrifying, but the spiritual disaster is even greater: rejection, disgrace, regret, and being veiled from honour.

  • Qur’an 4:56: Mentions skins being replaced so the punishment is tasted.
  • Qur’an 22:19-22: Mentions garments of fire and boiling water.

  • Qur’an 35:36: Mentions that the punishment will not be lightened for the disbelievers and they will not be ended there.
Food and Drink No comfort

Food and drink of the people of Jahannam

  • Zaqqum is mentioned in the Qur’an. It is described as a tree that grows from the bottom of Hell, and the people of Hell will eat from it.
  • Its food does not nourish. The Qur’an mentions food that neither nourishes nor benefits against hunger.
  • Boiling water is mentioned repeatedly. They will be given intensely boiling water and bitter drink as part of punishment.
  • Ghislin is mentioned. The Qur’an mentions foul food for the sinners in Surah al-Haqqah.
  • There is thirst without relief. This is not ordinary thirst followed by comfort. It is need turned into punishment.
  • Do not turn the descriptions into cartoon images. Believe what Allah said, fear it, and avoid exaggerations from weak tales.

Who Enters Do not guess names

Who is warned with Jahannam?

  • Disbelief and shirk are the greatest dangers. The Qur’an repeatedly warns those who reject Allah, deny His signs, and meet Him without faith.
  • Hypocrisy is severely warned against. The Qur’an warns the hypocrites with the lowest depth of the Fire.
  • Arrogance leads to destruction. Iblis refused truth out of pride, and arrogance is repeatedly connected to rejection.
  • Oppression is a serious danger. Wronging people, taking rights, shedding blood unjustly, slandering, abusing, cheating, and refusing to repent are not small matters.
  • Neglect of salah and the poor is mentioned. The people of Saqar will say they were not among those who prayed and they did not feed the poor.
  • Mocking truth is dangerous. Wading with those who speak falsehood and denying the Day of Judgment are also mentioned in the same Qur’anic passage.
  • Do not declare specific living people to be from Hell. We warn with the categories Allah warned against, but the final judgment of individuals belongs to Allah unless revelation states it.

Source for this section

  • Qur’an 4:48: Allah does not forgive shirk for the one who meets Him upon it, but forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.
  • Qur’an 4:145: The hypocrites are in the lowest depth of the Fire.
  • Qur’an 74:42-47: Mentions reasons people entered Saqar: abandoning prayer, not feeding the poor, wading in falsehood, and denying the Day of Judgment.
  • Sahih Muslim 2581: The bankrupt person loses good deeds to those he wronged, then may carry their sins if his good deeds run out.
  • Sahih Muslim 2578: Oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection.
Specific Cases Only by revelation

Specific people mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ

  • The Prophet ﷺ did not speak about the unseen from himself. Matters of the Hereafter are known only through what Allah revealed.
  • There is an authentic narration about his father. A man asked the Prophet ﷺ about his own father, and the Prophet ﷺ answered him. When the man turned away, the Prophet ﷺ called him and said that his father and the man’s father were in the Fire.
  • There is also an authentic narration about his mother’s grave. The Prophet ﷺ visited his mother’s grave and wept. He said he asked permission from Allah to seek forgiveness for her, but permission was not granted; he asked permission to visit her grave, and permission was granted.
  • Speak about this with adab. These narrations are not for arguments, mockery, or harsh speech. They show that guidance, salvation, and final judgment belong to Allah, not to family status or emotion.
  • Do not add more than the authentic wording. For the father, the hadith wording is explicit. For the mother, the hadith wording mentions that permission to seek forgiveness was not granted, so we stop where the narration stops.
  • The lesson is serious. If closeness to the best of creation ﷺ does not save without faith, then no one should rely on lineage, culture, tribe, family, or labels while neglecting tawhid and obedience.

  • Sahih Muslim 203: Mentions the Prophet ﷺ saying, “My father and your father are in the Fire.”
  • Sahih Muslim 976a and 976b: Mention the Prophet ﷺ visiting his mother’s grave, weeping, being granted permission to visit it, and not being granted permission to seek forgiveness for her.
  • Qur’an 53:3-4: The Prophet ﷺ did not speak from desire in matters of revelation.
Eternity Mercy and justice

Who will remain in Jahannam forever?

  • Those who die upon disbelief remain forever. The Qur’an repeatedly says that those who reject Allah and meet Him upon disbelief will abide in the Fire.
  • Major hypocrisy is also a severe eternal danger. The hypocrites who outwardly showed Islam while inwardly rejecting faith are warned with the lowest depth of the Fire.
  • Shirk is the greatest danger. Whoever meets Allah upon shirk without repentance is not forgiven, while Allah may forgive what is less than that for whom He wills.
  • There is no second worldly test after judgment. Regret on that Day will not create another chance to return and redo worldly life.
  • Sinful people of tawhid are not judged like disbelievers. A person who dies with tawhid but has major sins is under Allah’s will: Allah may forgive, may punish, and may later remove him by His mercy.
  • Do not name people without revelation. We warn with the categories Allah warned against, but we do not declare a specific person from the people of Jahannam unless Allah and His Messenger ﷺ informed us.
  • Eternity will be announced. After the people of Jannah enter Jannah and the people of Jahannam enter Jahannam, mortality will be brought to an end and each group will be told that it will remain forever.

  • Qur’an 2:39, 4:169, and 98:6: Mention the abiding punishment of those who reject Allah and meet Him upon disbelief.
  • Qur’an 4:48: Allah does not forgive shirk for the one who meets Him upon it, but forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.
  • Qur’an 4:145: The hypocrites are in the lowest depth of the Fire.
  • Sahih al-Bukhari 4730 and Sahih Muslim 2849a: Mortality will be brought to an end, and eternity will be announced for the people of Jannah and the people of Jahannam.
Believers Removed by mercy

How sinful believers may enter Jannah after punishment

  • Some people of tawhid may enter Jahannam because of sins. This is why major sins, oppression, neglecting duties, and careless living must never be treated lightly.
  • They will not remain forever if Allah saves them upon tawhid. Authentic narrations mention people being brought out from the Fire by Allah’s mercy and by intercession that Allah permits.
  • They will be removed after punishment and purification. The narration mentions people being taken out after they had been touched by the Fire, then Allah restores them by His mercy.
  • They will be placed in the River of Life. The hadith describes them growing again like seeds carried by a flood, then coming out like pearls.
  • They will then enter Jannah. The people of Jannah will recognize them as those freed by ar-Rahman, meaning Allah saved them by His mercy after the Fire.
  • Intercession does not work without Allah’s permission. The angels, Prophets, and believers may intercede only as Allah allows, then Allah’s mercy is even greater.
  • This should create fear and hope together. Hope: Allah can save people after terrible sins. Fear: no one knows whether he can bear even a moment of Jahannam.

  • Sahih al-Bukhari 7439: Mentions people being taken out of the Fire, growing by the River of Life, entering Jannah, and being known as those freed by the Most Merciful.
  • Sahih Muslim 183: Mentions intercession and Allah bringing out people from the Fire by His mercy.
  • Qur’an 20:109 and 39:44: Intercession belongs to Allah and only benefits by His permission.
Allah’s Mercy Authentic hadith

The last person to come out of Jahannam

  • This hadith is very authentic and full of hope. The Prophet ﷺ said he knew the last person who would come out of the Fire and the last person who would enter Jannah.
  • He will come out in a broken state. One narration describes him coming out crawling, and another mentions that he will walk, stumble, and be touched by the Fire until Allah saves him from it.
  • He will first feel only relief from Jahannam. When he gets beyond it, he will praise Allah for saving him from it, because even leaving the Fire is a mercy beyond imagination.
  • Allah will bring him closer step by step. In the longer narration, he asks to be brought near a tree for shade and water, then another tree, then closer to the gate of Jannah. Each time he promises not to ask for more, but the beauty of Allah’s mercy keeps opening doors for him.
  • He will think Jannah is already full. In the narration, he is told to enter Jannah, but he imagines it is full and returns saying he found it full.
  • Allah will give him an enormous reward. Allah will tell him to enter Jannah, and he will have what equals the world and ten times as much. This is the lowest person of Jannah, yet his reward is greater than worldly imagination.
  • The Prophet ﷺ smiled when narrating it. The narration mentions the Prophet ﷺ smiling when describing the man’s astonishment at Allah’s generosity.
  • This does not make Jahannam light. The hadith should increase hope in Allah’s mercy, but it should never become a reason to take sins lightly. This man is saved after a terrifying punishment, not through careless confidence.
  • Only Allah decides who is removed. This applies to people whom Allah saves by His mercy, tawhid, and intercession. It does not cancel the Qur’anic warning that those who die upon disbelief remain in the Fire.

  • Sahih al-Bukhari 6571: The Prophet ﷺ said he knew the last person to come out of the Fire and the last to enter Paradise, and mentioned that Allah would give him what equals the world and ten times as much.
  • Sahih Muslim 187: Mentions the last person to enter Paradise walking, stumbling, being touched by the Fire, then being moved by Allah’s mercy until he enters Paradise.
  • Sahih al-Bukhari 806 and Sahih al-Bukhari 6573: Mention details of the last person from the people of the Fire to enter Paradise and Allah granting him more than he expected.
Cries Regret

The regret and speech of the people of Jahannam

  • They will admit the warning came. The people of Jahannam will not be able to say they were wronged by Allah.
  • They will ask to be returned. The Qur’an mentions people asking to return and do righteous deeds, but that request will be refused after the chance has ended.
  • They will call upon Malik. They will ask Malik that their Lord put an end to them, but the answer will be that they will remain.
  • They will ask for relief. The Qur’an describes requests for relief, water, and reduction, but those requests will not save those for whom punishment is decreed.
  • They will blame one another. Followers and leaders will dispute, but blame will not remove accountability.
  • This is why repentance must happen now. The door of repentance is open in worldly life before the soul reaches the throat and before the final signs close the door.

  • Qur’an 39:71: They admit that messengers came with warning.
  • Qur’an 23:99-108: Mentions the request to return and the answer given to them.

  • Qur’an 40:47-50: Mentions the people of Hell disputing and asking the keepers to call upon Allah for relief.
  • Qur’an 14:21-22: Mentions followers and leaders disputing, and Shaytan disowning those who followed him.
Misused Hadith Teach carefully

The hadith about many women in Hell

  • This hadith is authentic, but many people misuse it. The Prophet ﷺ warned women because of specific sins mentioned in the narration, not because women are hated or spiritually inferior.
  • The warning mentions ingratitude and harmful speech. In the narration, the Prophet ﷺ mentioned women cursing frequently and being ungrateful to their husbands.
  • Men also have many severe warnings. Arrogance, oppression, neglecting salah, cheating, consuming haram, abusing others, and rejecting truth can destroy anyone.
  • Do not use this hadith to insult women. A warning from revelation is a medicine, not a weapon for mockery.
  • Women can be among the highest people of Jannah. The Qur’an addresses believing men and believing women with reward, mercy, forgiveness, and eternal honour.
  • The correct lesson is self-accountability. Every reader should ask: what sin am I being warned away from?

Source for this section

  • Sahih al-Bukhari 29 and Sahih Muslim 79: Mention the Prophet ﷺ warning women and explaining some causes.
  • Qur’an 33:35: Allah mentions believing men and believing women together with forgiveness and great reward.
  • Qur’an 40:40: Whoever does righteousness, male or female, while believing, will enter Paradise and be provided for without account.
Protection Duas

Duas for protection from Jahannam

After the final tashahhud, before salam

Transliteration: Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika min ‘adhabi Jahannam, wa min ‘adhabil-qabr, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-Masihid-Dajjal.

Meaning: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Jahannam, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and passing, and from the evil trial of the False Messiah.

Qur’anic dua for this world, the Hereafter, and the Fire

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Transliteration: Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.

Meaning: Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Dua of the servants of ar-Rahman

رَبَّنَا اصْرِفْ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا

Transliteration: Rabbana isrif ‘anna ‘adhaba Jahannam, inna ‘adhabaha kana gharama.

Meaning: Our Lord, turn away from us the punishment of Jahannam. Indeed, its punishment is ever clinging.

Dua while reflecting on creation

رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَٰذَا بَاطِلًا سُبْحَانَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Transliteration: Rabbana ma khalaqta hadha batila, subhanaka faqina ‘adhaban-nar.

Meaning: Our Lord, You did not create this without purpose. Glory be to You, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Source for these duas

  • Sahih Muslim 588: The Prophet ﷺ taught seeking refuge from the punishment of Jahannam, punishment of the grave, trials of life and passing, and the trial of the Dajjal before salam.
  • Qur’an 2:201: The dua asking for good in this world, good in the Hereafter, and protection from the Fire.
  • Qur’an 25:65-66: The dua of the servants of ar-Rahman asking Allah to turn away the punishment of Jahannam.
  • Qur’an 3:191: The dua while reflecting on creation and asking protection from the Fire.
Wrong Claims Avoid extremes

Wrong claims people make about Jahannam

  • Claim: “Jahannam is only a metaphor.” This is false. The Qur’an and authentic Sunnah speak of it as a real creation and real punishment.
  • Claim: “Everyone will leave Jahannam eventually.” This is false. The disbelievers who die upon disbelief are described as abiding forever.
  • Claim: “No Muslim can ever enter Jahannam.” This is unsafe. Major sins are serious, and sinful people of tawhid are under Allah’s will.
  • Claim: “The narrations about the Prophet’s ﷺ parents should be hidden or mocked.” Both extremes are wrong. Authentic hadith should be taught with respect, careful wording, and no harshness.
  • Claim: “I can sin now and rely on intercession later.” This is spiritual gambling with the Fire. Intercession is by Allah’s permission, not a license to rebel.
  • Claim: “Every scary story about Jahannam is authentic.” No. Many popular stories about snakes, valleys, exact levels, and named punishments circulate without reliable proof.
  • Claim: “We can say this living person is definitely from Hell.” Do not speak on Allah’s behalf. Warn with revelation, but leave the final judgment of individuals to Allah unless revelation named them.
  • Claim: “Talking about Jahannam means ignoring Allah’s mercy.” False. A balanced heart fears Allah’s warning and hopes in His mercy together.
Lessons For the heart

What belief in Jahannam should change in us

  • Repent quickly. Do not wait for the heart to become hard. Tawbah is a door Allah opened before the Day comes.
  • Protect your salah. Salah is the first deed judged and neglect of prayer is among the dangers mentioned by the people of Saqar.
  • Return people’s rights. Oppression can take away good deeds on the Day when good deeds are needed most.
  • Do not mock sin. A sin laughed at becomes heavier on the heart than a sin cried over.
  • Balance fear and hope. Fear without hope can crush a person; hope without fear can make a person careless. A believer walks with both.
  • Ask Allah for protection often. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to seek refuge from Jahannam, so no believer should feel above that dua.

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds.
