His story in detail

From the Prophet’s ﷺ household to the reconciliation that fulfilled a Prophetic sign.

Story Step

A child of the Prophet’s ﷺ household

Hasan ibn Ali رضي الله عنهما was born into the noblest household of this Ummah. His father was Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه, and his mother was Fatimah رضي الله عنها, the daughter of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Through him, the reader sees the tenderness of the Prophet ﷺ with children, the honour of Ahl al-Bayt, and the strength of peacemaking when the Ummah was wounded by division.

Story Step

Born in Madinah

Historical and biographical works commonly place his birth in Madinah in 3 AH / 625 CE, often mentioning Ramadan. Exact birth-day details are reported in later historical works, so the safest wording is to mention the year and say that the exact day is commonly reported but not established through Qur’an or sound hadith.

Story Step

His name

His name was al-Hasan رضي الله عنه. Seerah works mention that the Prophet ﷺ loved him and that his naming is connected to the household of the Prophet ﷺ. When using detailed naming stories, write them as Seerah and biographical reports unless a specific authentic chain is being quoted.

Story Step

Grandson of the Messenger ﷺ

Hasan رضي الله عنه was the son of the Prophet’s ﷺ daughter, Fatimah رضي الله عنها. The Prophet ﷺ did not treat him as distant family. He carried him, embraced him, kissed him, placed him near himself, and taught the Ummah through visible mercy toward him.

Story Step

Son of Ali and Fatimah رضي الله عنهما

His parents were among the closest people to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Ali رضي الله عنه was raised close to the Prophet ﷺ and became his son-in-law. Fatimah رضي الله عنها was deeply beloved to her father ﷺ. Hasan رضي الله عنه therefore grew up inside a home of worship, courage, patience, modesty, and nearness to revelation.

Story Step

Brother of Husayn رضي الله عنهما

Hasan and Husayn رضي الله عنهما are often mentioned together in hadith because both carried the love of the Prophet ﷺ and the honour of Ahl al-Bayt. Still, each life must be written separately. Hasan رضي الله عنه is especially connected to mercy, leadership, and bringing peace between Muslims.

Story Step

The Prophet ﷺ kissed Hasan رضي الله عنه

Sahih al-Bukhari records that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissed Hasan ibn Ali رضي الله عنه while al-Aqra ibn Habis was sitting nearby. When al-Aqra said he had ten children and had never kissed any of them, the Prophet ﷺ replied that whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy. Hasan رضي الله عنه became part of a living lesson in tenderness.

Story Step

Mercy was taught through him

This report is not only a family moment. It corrects hardness in parenting. The Prophet ﷺ did not hide affection from children in the name of seriousness. He showed love openly. Hasan رضي الله عنه became a small lantern through which the Sunnah taught fathers, mothers, elders, and leaders that mercy is not weakness.

Story Step

The Prophet ﷺ loved him

Sahih al-Bukhari records that the Prophet ﷺ called Hasan رضي الله عنه, embraced him, and made dua: O Allah, I love him, so love him and love those who love him. This is one of the clearest authentic virtues of Hasan رضي الله عنه and should be kept visible on his page.

Story Step

Love for him is connected to love of the Prophet ﷺ

The Prophet’s ﷺ dua teaches that love for Hasan رضي الله عنه is not a cultural decoration. It is part of honouring the Messenger’s ﷺ family with faith, balance, and respect. That love must never become exaggeration, and it must never become neglect. It should remain Sunnah-shaped love.

Story Step

Hasan and Husayn رضي الله عنهما as sweet basils

Sahih al-Bukhari records that the Prophet ﷺ described Hasan and Husayn رضي الله عنهما as his two sweet basils in this world. The wording carries tenderness. These two grandsons were a source of joy, fragrance, and comfort to the Messenger ﷺ in the life of this world.

Story Step

Ahl al-Bayt under the cloak

Sahih Muslim records the cloak report in which the Prophet ﷺ gathered Hasan, Husayn, Fatimah, and Ali رضي الله عنهم and made dua for his household. This report is a major source for mentioning Hasan رضي الله عنه among the honoured Ahl al-Bayt.

Story Step

The Mubahalah connection

Sahih Muslim also records the report connected to Qur’an 3:61, where the Prophet ﷺ called Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn رضي الله عنهم and said: O Allah, these are my family. This gives Hasan رضي الله عنه a special public place in the Prophet’s ﷺ family during a major moment of truth.

Story Step

Qur’an 3:61 and careful wording

Qur’an 3:61 itself does not name Hasan رضي الله عنه directly. The connection comes through authentic hadith explaining who the Prophet ﷺ called. So the page should say: the hadith connects Hasan رضي الله عنه to the event of Mubahalah, not that his name appears in the verse.

Story Step

A child who saw the Prophet ﷺ

Hasan رضي الله عنه was young during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, but authentic reports show that he directly experienced the Prophet’s ﷺ affection. His childhood is therefore not a blank page. It is filled with moments of embrace, dua, mercy, and public honour.

Story Step

Raised in the shadow of revelation

Hasan رضي الله عنه grew up in Madinah, where Qur’an was being revealed and the Sunnah was being lived. His earliest memories were not surrounded by palace customs or tribal vanity, but by prayer, simplicity, charity, patience, and the Messenger ﷺ teaching the Ummah.

Story Step

His mother Fatimah رضي الله عنها

Fatimah رضي الله عنها was the mother of Hasan رضي الله عنه. Her home was known for worship, restraint, sacrifice, and closeness to the Prophet ﷺ. When writing Hasan’s page, her role should be mentioned with honour but not turned into a separate biography. The focus stays on Hasan رضي الله عنه.

Story Step

His father Ali رضي الله عنه

Ali رضي الله عنه was his father and one of the earliest believers, a scholar, warrior, judge, and khalifah. Hasan رضي الله عنه inherited a legacy of knowledge and courage, but his own most visible historical act became peacemaking rather than extending conflict.

Story Step

The Prophet ﷺ called him a sayyid

Sahih al-Bukhari records that the Prophet ﷺ looked at Hasan رضي الله عنه and at the people while on the pulpit and said that this son of his was a sayyid, a noble leader. This was not an empty compliment. It pointed to a future event that would shape Muslim history.

Story Step

The prophecy of reconciliation

In the same hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said that Allah may bring peace between two large groups of Muslims through Hasan رضي الله عنه. This became one of the clearest signs of his virtue. His honour was not only in being born into a blessed family, but in choosing peace when power was in his hand.

Story Step

After Ali رضي الله عنه returned to Allah

When Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه returned to Allah in 40 AH / 661 CE, many Muslims in Iraq gave allegiance to Hasan رضي الله عنه. The Ummah was already bruised by conflict, and the political situation was tense. Hasan رضي الله عنه stood at a crossroads between continued fighting and reconciliation.

Story Step

Leadership with restraint

Hasan رضي الله عنه had supporters and a claim to leadership. Yet the Prophetic praise about him came to life when he chose the path that stopped wider Muslim bloodshed. His leadership was not measured only by how long he ruled, but by what he prevented.

Story Step

The year of unity

The reconciliation with Mu‘awiyah رضي الله عنه is commonly placed in 41 AH / 661 CE and is often called the year of unity. Wording should remain respectful. The purpose of this page is not to reopen political wounds, but to show how Hasan رضي الله عنه fulfilled a Prophetic sign by bringing peace between large Muslim groups.

Story Step

Why the reconciliation matters

Many people imagine courage only as fighting. Hasan رضي الله عنه teaches another form of courage: surrendering personal position to protect the Ummah from greater harm. His decision was not weakness. It was disciplined mercy, like a sword returned to its sheath before it wounds the house it was meant to protect.

Story Step

Do not write this as defeat

The Prophet ﷺ had already praised Hasan رضي الله عنه for this future peacemaking. Therefore, his reconciliation should not be written as humiliation or loss. It should be written as honour, wisdom, sacrifice, and fulfilment of the Messenger’s ﷺ words.

Story Step

His life after reconciliation

After the reconciliation, Hasan رضي الله عنه lived away from political confrontation, mainly in Madinah according to the well-known historical account. His later life should be written simply, without loading the page with disputed reports unless the purpose is to clarify what is not established.

Story Step

His children and descendants

Hasan رضي الله عنه had descendants, and many later families are connected to him through the Hasanid line. However, detailed lists of his children differ across historical works. On this Sahabah page, mention the existence of his descendants briefly and avoid making a long unsourced list.

Story Step

His character

The strongest image of Hasan رضي الله عنه is a noble grandson loved by the Prophet ﷺ, raised in Ahl al-Bayt, and known for dignity, generosity, patience, and reconciliation. Reports about generosity are common in biographical literature, but should be separated from authentic hadith virtues.

Story Step

His relationship to the Sahabah

Hasan رضي الله عنه lived among the Companions and was himself a Companion. He was respected because of his faith, family, and position. The page should not present Sahabah history as a battlefield of insults. Keep the tone dignified and united upon love for the Prophet ﷺ and his family.

Story Step

His return to Allah

Historical works commonly place Hasan رضي الله عنه returning to Allah in Madinah in 49 or 50 AH, with 50 AH / 670 CE often mentioned. Some later reports mention poisoning, but details naming the person responsible are disputed and should not be stated as certain without strong proof.

Story Step

Burial in al-Baqi

Biographical works mention that Hasan رضي الله عنه was buried in al-Baqi in Madinah. This detail is widely reported historically. Keep the wording simple and avoid turning the final section into polemics or dramatic storytelling.

Story Step

His place in Sunni Muslim love

Loving Hasan رضي الله عنه is part of loving the family of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Sunni love for Ahl al-Bayt is firm, reverent, and balanced. It avoids exaggeration, avoids neglect, and avoids using the family of the Prophet ﷺ as a weapon against the rest of the Sahabah.

Story Step

What his life teaches

Hasan رضي الله عنه teaches mercy with children, love for Ahl al-Bayt, nobility without arrogance, leadership without greed, and peace without cowardice. His greatest public act shows that sometimes the most powerful hand is the one that refuses to keep the fire burning.

Story Step

Why his page matters

A focused page on Hasan رضي الله عنه gives readers a clear Islamic picture: he was the Prophet’s ﷺ beloved grandson, from Ahl al-Bayt, praised in authentic hadith, connected to Mubahalah, and the noble leader through whom Allah brought reconciliation between Muslims.

The Prophet’s ﷺ love for Hasan رضي الله عنه

The authentic hadith reports about Hasan رضي الله عنه are filled with warmth. The Prophet ﷺ kissed him, embraced him, loved him, and made dua that Allah love him and love those who love him. These reports teach the Ummah how mercy looks when it is lived, not merely spoken.

This love must be written with balance. Hasan رضي الله عنه is honoured because the Prophet ﷺ honoured him, and because Allah raised him through faith, family, patience, and reconciliation. The page should avoid both dry biography and emotional exaggeration.

Important wording

Say: Hasan رضي الله عنه was the grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through Fatimah رضي الله عنها. Do not call him the Prophet’s ﷺ biological son, but it is correct to say the Prophet ﷺ called him “this son of mine” in the known hadith wording as an expression of close family honour.

Ahl al-Bayt and Mubahalah

Hasan رضي الله عنه is among the honoured Ahl al-Bayt. Sahih Muslim records the cloak report with Hasan, Husayn, Fatimah, and Ali رضي الله عنهم. Sahih Muslim also records the report connected to Qur’an 3:61, where the Prophet ﷺ called Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn رضي الله عنهم and said they were his family.

This should be written carefully. The Qur’an verse itself does not list their names inside the ayah. The authentic hadith explains the people called by the Prophet ﷺ for that event. This keeps the page strong, accurate, and respectful.

The reconciliation in 41 AH

After Ali رضي الله عنه returned to Allah, Hasan رضي الله عنه received allegiance from many Muslims. The Ummah was in a fragile period after years of internal conflict. In 41 AH / 661 CE, he reached reconciliation with Mu‘awiyah رضي الله عنه, and this year became known in many historical writings as the year of unity.

This moment should be understood through Sahih al-Bukhari 2704. The Prophet ﷺ had already said that Allah may bring peace between two large Muslim groups through Hasan رضي الله عنه. So his decision is not a small political footnote. It is one of the greatest public virtues in his life.
