Umm Sulaym رضي الله عنها
One of the noble women of Madinah, mother of Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه, wife of Abu Talhah رضي الله عنه, a woman of deep faith, patience, courage, service, and remarkable wisdom in family life.
Umm Sulaym
She is commonly known as Umm Sulaym رضي الله عنها. Her personal name is reported as Rumaysa, Rumaylah, or Sahlah, with variation in biographical sources.
Mother of Anas رضي الله عنه
She brought Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه to serve the Prophet ﷺ, giving her son to a household of revelation and learning.
Islam as her mahr
When Abu Talhah رضي الله عنه wished to marry her, she would not accept until he embraced Islam. His Islam became her mahr.
Her identity and family
Umm Sulaym رضي الله عنها was from the Ansar of Madinah, from Banu Najjar. She is best known by her kunyah, Umm Sulaym, and biographical works mention different reports about her personal name, including Rumaysa, Rumaylah, and Sahlah.
She was the mother of Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه, one of the famous servants and narrators of hadith from the Prophet ﷺ. Her brother was Haram ibn Milhan رضي الله عنه, a Companion remembered in the reports of Bi'r Ma'unah.
Her home became a place connected to service, knowledge, courage, and love for the Prophet ﷺ.

Qur'an 49:13Early faith in Madinah
Umm Sulaym رضي الله عنها accepted Islam early in Madinah. Her first husband, Malik ibn an-Nadr, did not accept her Islam and became upset with her choice according to reports. He later left Madinah and returned to Allah outside the city.
She remained firm upon Islam and raised Anas رضي الله عنه in faith. Her firmness shows that a woman’s Islam is not dependent on the approval of the people around her.
This part of her life should be taught with dignity: she was a mother, a believer, and a woman who chose Allah even when family life became difficult.
Ibn Sa'd; Ibn Hajar; Ibn Abd al-Barr; Seerah reportsShe gives Anas رضي الله عنه to serve the Prophet ﷺ
When the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah, Umm Sulaym رضي الله عنها brought her young son Anas رضي الله عنه to him and offered his service. She wanted her child to be close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and learn from him.
Anas رضي الله عنه served the Prophet ﷺ for ten years and later narrated many hadith. This means Umm Sulaym’s رضي الله عنها decision became a major source of knowledge for the Ummah.
Her gift was not wealth. It was her beloved son, placed in the service of the Prophet ﷺ with trust and sincerity.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6038; Sahih Muslim 2309; Sahih Muslim 2481; biographical reportsDua for good offspring

She told him that a man like him should not be rejected, but he was not Muslim, and she was a Muslim woman. Reports mention that she accepted his Islam as her mahr, making this one of the most beautiful marriage stories among the Companions.
This was not a bargain with religion. It was a sign of what she valued most. Faith was worth more to her than wealth, display, or social advantage.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 3341; Musnad Ahmad; Ibn Sa'd; Ibn Hajar; reports widely citedThe passing of her child and her patience
One of the most famous reports about Umm Sulaym رضي الله عنها is her patience when her young child with Abu Talhah رضي الله عنه became ill and returned to Allah. When Abu Talhah came home, she did not shock him immediately. She prepared him with wisdom and then informed him with calm trust in Allah.
Abu Talhah رضي الله عنه later told the Prophet ﷺ what had happened. The Prophet ﷺ supplicated for them, and Allah blessed them with another child. That child, Abdullah, later had many righteous descendants according to reports.
This story must be taught with tenderness. It is not a demand that every grieving person must act the same way. It shows one woman’s extraordinary patience, wisdom, and trust in Allah in a painful test.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1301; Sahih Muslim 2144; biographical reportsReturning what belongs to Allah
