بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Mother of the Believers

Khadijah رضي الله عنها

The first believer, the Prophet’s ﷺ honoured wife, his support in Makkah, the mother of his children, and one of the greatest women in Islam.

Name01

Khadijah bint Khuwaylid

She was from Quraysh, from Banu Asad, and was known in Makkah for honour, intelligence, and noble character.

Honour02

Honoured in Makkah

She was respected for dignity, wisdom, wealth, trustworthiness, and pure character before Allah honoured her with the most blessed marriage.

Rank03

One of the best women

Authentic hadith mention her among the greatest women, with Maryam عليها السلام, Asiyah رضي الله عنها, and Fatimah رضي الله عنها.

Her noble background in Makkah

Khadijah رضي الله عنها was Khadijah bint Khuwaylid ibn Asad ibn Abd al-Uzza. She belonged to Quraysh, from Banu Asad, and came from a respected family in Makkah. Before Islam, she was known for dignity, wisdom, business ability, trustworthiness, and noble character.

She was a successful businesswoman whose trade was handled through trustworthy people. In a society where many leaders chased status, Allah gave her honour without lowering her modesty or dignity. She dealt with people through trust, responsibility, and good judgement.

Before marrying the Prophet ﷺ, she had been married before and was a widow. Biographical reports mention that she had children from earlier marriage, including Hind and Halah in some narrations, while other reports differ in details of names and order. Because these details come from Seerah and biographical reports, they are mentioned with care, not as Qur'an or hadith-level certainty.

Reports also mention that she was known as al-Tahirah, meaning the pure woman, because of her noble reputation. This title is from biographical reports, not a Qur'anic title, so it is mentioned with careful wording.

Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Hisham, Ibn Sa'd, Ibn Hajar, al-Tabari

Her marriage to the Prophet ﷺ

Before prophethood, the Prophet ﷺ was already known in Makkah as al-Amin, the trustworthy one. Khadijah رضي الله عنها heard of his honesty and entrusted him with trade work. Reports mention that her servant Maysarah travelled with him and observed his honesty, noble manners, and excellent character during the journey.

When Maysarah returned, the reports say he spoke about what he had seen of the Prophet’s ﷺ truthfulness and noble conduct. Khadijah رضي الله عنها was a woman of intelligence and strong judgement. She did not look only at trade profit; she recognised character, honesty, and trustworthiness.

Reports mention that Nafisah bint Munyah, a woman known to Khadijah رضي الله عنها, helped carry the matter forward. She spoke to the Prophet ﷺ and then the proposal moved in a dignified way through family and guardians. This detail is from Seerah reports, so it should be taught as a reported account, not as a Qur'anic or hadith text.

The marriage took place before revelation, around 595 CE, when the Prophet ﷺ was about twenty-five years old. Khadijah رضي الله عنها was older than him and had been married before, but these details must be mentioned with honour, because Allah chose her for the most blessed home. Their marriage was built on truthfulness, trust, respect, mercy, and the excellent character Allah had placed in both of them.

The marriage was blessed. For many years, the Prophet ﷺ did not marry anyone else while she was alive. This shows her special place in his life and the peace Allah placed in that household.

Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Hisham, Ibn Sa'd, Ibn Hajar; Sahih Muslim 2436

Mother of the Prophet’s ﷺ children

Khadijah رضي الله عنها was the mother of the Prophet’s ﷺ children, except Ibrahim رضي الله عنه. Their children were al-Qasim رضي الله عنه, Zaynab رضي الله عنها, Ruqayyah رضي الله عنها, Umm Kulthum رضي الله عنها, Fatimah رضي الله عنها, and Abdullah رضي الله عنه.

Al-Qasim رضي الله عنه and Abdullah رضي الله عنه returned to Allah in childhood. The daughters lived into Islam and each has her own place in the Seerah. Fatimah رضي الله عنها remained after the Prophet ﷺ for a short time and is among the greatest women of the Ummah.

This makes Khadijah رضي الله عنها central not only as the first believer, but also as the honoured mother of the Prophet’s ﷺ household in Makkah.

Ibn Sa'd, Ibn Hajar, Seerah reports

The wives of the Prophet ﷺ have a special rank

النَّبِيُّ أَوْلَىٰ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ ۖ وَأَزْوَاجُهُ أُمَّهَاتُهُمْ

Meaning: “The Prophet is closer to the believers than themselves, and his wives are their mothers.”

Qur'an 33:6

The first revelation and her support

When the Prophet ﷺ received the first revelation in Cave Hira, he returned to Khadijah رضي الله عنها shaken by the greatness of what had happened. He said words meaning, “Cover me, cover me.” She covered him, comforted him, and listened.

Her reply is one of the most beautiful moments in the Seerah. She told him that Allah would never disgrace him, because he kept family ties, carried the weak, helped those in need, honoured guests, and supported truth.

This was not an ordinary comfort. Khadijah رضي الله عنها understood his character. She judged the moment through what she knew of his truthfulness, mercy, and service. Then she took him to Waraqah ibn Nawfal, who recognised the matter as revelation.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3; Sahih Muslim 160

The first revealed words

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ

Meaning: “Read in the name of your Lord who created.”

Qur'an 96:1

The first believer

Khadijah رضي الله عنها believed in the Prophet ﷺ at the very beginning. She did not demand worldly proof, status, or public approval. She knew his truthfulness and accepted the message when others had not yet heard it.

Her iman came at the most delicate stage of Islam, when the Prophet ﷺ had not yet been publicly supported by a community. Her heart became the first safe home of the message.

Because of this, she is remembered as the first believer and the first person to support the Messenger ﷺ in his mission.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3; Ibn Hisham; Ibn Sa'd

She strengthened the Prophet ﷺ

In the earliest days of revelation, Khadijah رضي الله عنها gave the Prophet ﷺ emotional strength, household peace, and complete loyalty. She did not make his burden heavier. She made home a place of mercy.

Her support shows that a righteous spouse can become a fortress of iman during the hardest moments.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3; Sahih Muslim 160

She used her wealth for Islam

Biographical reports mention that Khadijah رضي الله عنها supported the Prophet ﷺ with her wealth. In the Makkan years, this support mattered deeply because the believers faced pressure, isolation, and hardship.

Her wealth was not merely business success. It became service to Allah’s religion.

Ibn Hisham; Ibn Sa'd; Seerah reports

Prayer in the earliest days

Reports mention that Khadijah رضي الله عنها prayed with the Prophet ﷺ in the early period of Islam. The full rules of the five daily prayers were established later, but worship and prayer existed from the beginning of revelation.

This shows her early submission and her closeness to the Prophet ﷺ in faith and worship. She was not only a supporter from the outside. She was a believer who stood with him in obedience to Allah.

Seerah reports; prayer establishment later connected to Isra and Mi'raj reports in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

Dua for righteous family

رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ

Meaning: “Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and our children comfort of eyes.”

Qur'an 25:74

The boycott and the years of pressure

When Quraysh intensified their pressure, the Prophet ﷺ, Banu Hashim, and those connected to them endured the boycott in the valley of Abu Talib. Khadijah رضي الله عنها stood through this painful period with the Prophet ﷺ.

She had once lived with comfort and honour in Makkah, yet she chose loyalty to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ over ease. This stage shows the weight of her sacrifice. She did not support Islam only when it was quiet and safe. She remained firm when the cost became heavy.

The boycott lasted for years according to Seerah reports, ending before the Year of Sorrow. Soon after that, Khadijah رضي الله عنها returned to Allah.

Ibn Hisham; Ibn Sa'd; Seerah reports

Glad tidings from Allah

Jibril عليه السلام came to the Prophet ﷺ and said that Khadijah رضي الله عنها was coming with a vessel of food or drink. He told the Prophet ﷺ to give her salam from her Lord and from Jibril, and to give her glad tidings of a house in Paradise made of qasab, where there would be no noise and no fatigue.

This hadith shows her rank with Allah. The salam from Allah is an honour beyond ordinary praise, and the glad tidings match her life: she gave the Prophet ﷺ peace in this world, so Allah promised her a house of peace in Paradise.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3820; Sahih Muslim 2432

Allah gives glad tidings to the believers

لَهُمُ الْبُشْرَىٰ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ

Meaning: “For them are glad tidings in the worldly life and in the Hereafter.”

Qur'an 10:64

The Prophet’s ﷺ love for her

The Prophet ﷺ remembered Khadijah رضي الله عنها with deep love after she returned to Allah. Aishah رضي الله عنها said she did not feel protective about any woman as she did about Khadijah رضي الله عنها, because the Prophet ﷺ mentioned her often.

When a sheep was slaughtered, he would send portions to Khadijah’s friends. This was loyalty after separation. He did not forget her companionship, sacrifice, or love.

He ﷺ said that she believed in him when people disbelieved, she affirmed him when people rejected him, she supported him with her wealth when people denied him, and Allah granted him children through her.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3818; Sahih Muslim 2435; Musnad Ahmad reports

Her place among the greatest women

The Prophet ﷺ mentioned the excellence of Khadijah رضي الله عنها. Authentic reports name her among the best women. She stands with Maryam عليها السلام, Asiyah رضي الله عنها, and Fatimah رضي الله عنها in the highest examples of believing women.

Her greatness was not only because she was married to the Prophet ﷺ. Her greatness was in her iman, truthfulness, sacrifice, support, patience, and the honour Allah gave her.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3815; Sahih Muslim 2430; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3878

Examples for believers

وَضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا

Meaning: “And Allah presents an example for those who believe.”

Qur'an 66:11

The Year of Sorrow

Khadijah رضي الله عنها returned to Allah in Makkah before Hijrah, around the tenth year of prophethood, commonly placed around 619 CE. In the same period, Abu Talib also left this world. Because of these heavy losses, this period became known in the Seerah as the Year of Sorrow.

The Prophet ﷺ lost his closest household support and the family protection of Abu Talib in the same painful period. Yet he continued calling to Allah with patience.

Khadijah رضي الله عنها had stood with him from the first revelation until her final days. Her story closes in Makkah, but her honour remains alive in every generation that learns the Seerah.

What her story teaches

Khadijah رضي الله عنها teaches that the first support of a great mission may come from a quiet, truthful heart inside the home. She believed early, stood firm, used her wealth for good, comforted the Prophet ﷺ, and remained loyal through hardship.

Her life also teaches that marriage in Islam is not only companionship. At its best, it is mercy, trust, worship, sacrifice, and helping one another obey Allah.

She is loved by the Ummah because Allah honoured her, Jibril عليه السلام conveyed salam to her, the Prophet ﷺ loved her deeply, and her iman shone at the very beginning of Islam.
