Tabuk and the Year of Difficulty

This chapter covers the expedition of Tabuk: the heat, distance, shortage, open call to prepare, the generosity of the Companions, the hypocrites’ excuses, the sincere believers who could not find mounts, the Prophet’s ﷺ leadership on the journey, and the repentance of the three who stayed behind.

Where This Chapter Fits

After Hunayn and Ta'if, the Prophet ﷺ faced one of the hardest expeditions of his life. Tabuk came in extreme heat, at a time of fruit harvest, long distance, and real hardship.

Before01

Hunayn and Ta'if

The believers were tested after Makkah opened and learned reliance upon Allah.

This stage02

Tabuk

A long expedition exposed sincerity, excuses, sacrifice, and patience.

After03

Ibrahim

The next chapter returns to the Prophet’s ﷺ household and his son Ibrahim

Why Tabuk Was So Difficult

Tabuk was not like a short local movement around Madinah. It was a long journey north, in intense heat, at a time when people naturally wanted shade and harvest.

The expedition is remembered as part of the “Hour of Difficulty.” The Qur'an speaks of Allah turning in mercy to the Prophet ﷺ, the Muhajirun, and the Ansar who followed him in that difficult hour.

This was a test of sincerity. The road itself became a mirror: some hearts rushed toward Allah, some looked for excuses, and some were exposed.

Qur'an 9:117; Sahih al-Bukhari 4418; Sahih Muslim 2769

The Hour of Difficulty

Meaning: “Allah has certainly turned in mercy to the Prophet, the Muhajirun, and the Ansar who followed him in the hour of difficulty.”

Qur'an 9:117

An Open Call to Prepare

In many expeditions, the Prophet ﷺ could use strategic concealment. For Tabuk, the distance and hardship were so great that he made the matter clear so people could prepare properly.

The call exposed what each person valued. It was easy to speak of loyalty in comfort. Tabuk asked people to leave shade, food, family, and harvest for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.

This is why Tabuk is not remembered only as a military expedition. It is remembered as a test of truthfulness.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4418; Sahih Muslim 2769; Seerah reports

Go Forth Light or Heavy

Meaning: “Go forth, light or heavy, and strive with your wealth and yourselves in the way of Allah.”

Qur'an 9:41

Reports mention the great generosity of Uthman ibn Affan رضي الله عنه in preparing the army of difficulty. He gave wealth, animals, and equipment for the expedition.

His giving became a shining example of spending when the Ummah needed support most.

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3700; Musnad Ahmad reports; Seerah reports

Abu Bakr and Umar

Reports mention that Umar رضي الله عنه brought half of his wealth, hoping to surpass Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه brought all that he had, leaving Allah and His Messenger ﷺ for his family.

This was not competition for pride. It was a race of love for Allah.

Sunan Abi Dawud 1678; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3675

Spend in Allah’s Way

Meaning: “Whatever good you spend, Allah knows it well.”

Qur'an 2:273

The Believers Who Could Not Find Mounts

Some sincere believers came to the Prophet ﷺ asking for mounts so they could join the expedition. The Prophet ﷺ had nothing to carry them on.

They turned back with their eyes overflowing with tears because they could not find anything to spend or ride. The Qur'an recorded their sincerity forever.

This is one of Tabuk’s most tender scenes: some people stayed behind with excuses, while others wept because they could not go.

Qur'an 9:92; Sahih al-Bukhari 4423; Seerah reports

Eyes Overflowing with Tears

Meaning: “They turned away while their eyes overflowed with tears, grieving that they could not find anything to spend.”

Qur'an 9:92

Excuses and Hypocrisy Exposed

Surah at-Tawbah exposed the hypocrites who looked for excuses to remain behind. Some mocked the believers who gave charity, and some discouraged others from going out in the heat.

The Qur'an answered them with words that cut through comfort: the Fire of Hell is hotter, if only they understood.

Tabuk therefore became a purifier. It separated sincere weakness from false excuses, and real inability from hidden hypocrisy.

Qur'an 9:38-39; Qur'an 9:79-81; Sahih al-Bukhari 4668

The Fire Is Hotter

Meaning: “Say: the Fire of Hell is more intense in heat, if only they understood.”

Qur'an 9:81
Heat01

The road was hard

Tabuk came in heat, distance, and shortage.

Giving02

The truthful gave

Companions prepared the army with wealth, animals, and sacrifice.

Sincerity03

Hearts were revealed

Tabuk separated excuses from genuine faith.

Remains in Madinah

The Prophet ﷺ left Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه in charge of Madinah during Tabuk. Some hypocrites tried to hurt him with words, so Ali رضي الله عنه followed the Prophet ﷺ and expressed what had been said.

The Prophet ﷺ comforted him with a famous statement: “Are you not pleased that you are to me like Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me?”

This protected Ali’s رضي الله عنه honour and made clear that remaining in Madinah was not a sign of weakness, but a trusted assignment from the Messenger ﷺ.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4416; Sahih Muslim 2404

No Prophet After Him ﷺ

Meaning: “Rather, he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets.”

Qur'an 33:40

The Journey to Tabuk

The army travelled through hardship. Reports mention shortage of water and food, and the Prophet ﷺ gave instructions about places they passed, including warning the Companions when passing the dwellings of earlier punished people.

He ﷺ taught them not to enter such places casually, but to pass with humility and fear of Allah, so that they would not be heedless.

Even geography became a lesson. The land itself reminded the believers that past nations were not stories for entertainment; they were warnings for living hearts.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3378; Sahih Muslim 2980; Seerah reports

Travel Through the Earth and Reflect

Meaning: “Say: travel through the earth and observe.”

Qur'an 30:42

At Tabuk

The Prophet ﷺ reached Tabuk and stayed there for a period. The expected major confrontation did not take place, but the expedition still achieved important aims.

It demonstrated Muslim strength after Makkah and Hunayn, secured agreements with some regional communities, and showed that the Muslims could move far beyond Madinah when needed.

The value of Tabuk was not measured only by battle. It was measured by obedience, deterrence, treaties, exposure of hypocrisy, and the purification of the community.

Sahih Muslim 1392; Seerah reports in Ibn Hisham and Ibn Sa'd

Prepare What You Are Able

Meaning: “Prepare against them whatever force you are able.”

Qur'an 8:60

The Return to Madinah

On the way back, the Prophet ﷺ said that in Madinah there were people who had shared the reward of the journey. They had been held back by valid reasons, but their sincere intention kept them connected to the expedition.

This is one of the most hopeful lessons of Tabuk. Allah does not only see footsteps. He sees the truthful heart that would have walked if it could.

Tabuk therefore teaches both sacrifice and mercy: those able must go forward, and those truly unable are not forgotten by Allah.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4423; Sahih Muslim 1911

Allah Knows What Is in the Hearts

Meaning: “And Allah knows what is within the hearts.”

Qur'an 3:154

The Three Who Stayed Behind

Ka'b ibn Malik, Murarah ibn ar-Rabi', and Hilal ibn Umayyah رضي الله عنهم were sincere believers who stayed behind without a valid excuse. They did not lie when the Prophet ﷺ returned, unlike the hypocrites who offered false excuses.

The Prophet ﷺ instructed the Muslims to wait regarding them. The three lived through a severe period of social separation until the earth felt narrow to them despite its vastness.

Then Allah accepted their repentance. Their honesty became the reason their story was preserved in Qur'an, teaching the Ummah that truthfulness saves even when it hurts.

Qur'an 9:118; Sahih al-Bukhari 4418; Sahih Muslim 2769

Allah Accepted Their Repentance

Meaning: “And upon the three who were left behind, until the earth became tight for them despite its vastness...”

Qur'an 9:118

Chooses Truth

Ka'b رضي الله عنه narrated his own story in detail. He admitted that he had been strong and able, but delayed until the army had gone. When the Prophet ﷺ returned, Ka'b رضي الله عنه chose truth instead of inventing an excuse.

The test that followed was severe, but Allah made his honesty a path to forgiveness. When the news of repentance came, he gave charity in gratitude and held tightly to truthfulness.

His story is one of the greatest Seerah lessons about repentance: a bitter truth is better than a sweet lie.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4418; Sahih Muslim 2769

Be with the Truthful

Meaning: “O you who believe, be mindful of Allah and be with the truthful.”

Qur'an 9:119

Why Tabuk Matters

Tabuk matters because it revealed what was inside people. Some gave wealth, some wept because they could not go, some were given valid excuse, some lied, and some sinned but told the truth and returned to Allah.

It also showed the Prophet’s ﷺ leadership at the edge of empire: he moved a large army through difficulty, protected Madinah through trusted appointment, taught lessons from the lands of earlier nations, and returned with the community spiritually clearer than before.

Tabuk is therefore a chapter of heat, dust, tears, excuses, charity, truthfulness, and repentance. It is a mirror for every believer who claims love for Allah when the road becomes hard.

Dua for Repentance and Mercy

Meaning: “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.”

Qur'an 7:23

Keep sincerity central

Tabuk is a test of hearts more than a simple campaign report.

Keep the three included

Their repentance is one of the most important Qur'anic lessons from this stage.

Keep valid inability honoured

The believers who truly could not go were not equal to those who made false excuses.

What This Stage Led To

Tabuk exposed hypocrisy, honoured sacrifice, and taught the Ummah truthfulness in repentance. The next chapter returns to the Prophet’s ﷺ household with Ibrahim رضي الله عنه and the Prophet’s ﷺ mercy.
