Arrival in Madinah
This chapter covers the welcome in Quba and Madinah, the first days of safety after years of pressure, the Prophet’s ﷺ stay in Quba, the joy of the Ansar, and the beginning of a new stage for Islam.
Where This Chapter Fits
The Prophet ﷺ had left Makkah under threat, taken shelter in the cave of Thawr, and travelled with Abu Bakr Now the long road reached the land that would become Madinah.
Hijrah road
The Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه travelled under Allah’s protection after Quraysh plotted against him.
Arrival and safety
Quba and Madinah received the Messenger ﷺ after years of rejection, pressure, and persecution in Makkah.
Community begins
The next stage builds the masjid, brotherhood, and the foundations of Islamic life in Madinah.
The Waiting People of Madinah
The people of Yathrib had heard Islam, pledged support, and waited for the Messenger ﷺ. The Hijrah was not a rumour to them. It was the arrival of the Prophet ﷺ they had promised to protect.
Authentic reports mention that the Muslims in Madinah would go out in the mornings waiting for the Prophet ﷺ, then return when the heat became intense. Their waiting was full of longing, hope, and readiness.
After years of Makkan hostility, this image is deeply moving: a city waiting not to mock him, not to bargain with him, but to welcome him.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3906A Home Prepared by Faith
Meaning: “And those who settled in the home and faith before them love those who emigrated to them.”
Qur'an 59:9Arrival at Quba
Before entering the central part of Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ arrived at Quba and stayed there for some days according to the Seerah reports.
The first place of rest after the journey
Quba became the first resting place of the Prophet ﷺ near Madinah. After the fear of Quraysh, the cave, the road, the pursuit, and the long desert journey, Quba was a place of welcome and relief.
Seerah reports mention that he stayed among Banu Amr ibn Awf in Quba. During this stay, the foundations of Masjid Quba were connected to this blessed arrival. The masjid of Quba holds a special place in Islamic memory and worship.
The Prophet ﷺ did not arrive and immediately build a palace, military centre, or marketplace. The first visible sign of the new stage was worship, community, and a masjid.
Seerah reports in Ibn Hisham’s Al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah and Ibn Sa'd’s Al-Tabaqat al-Kubra; Sahih al-Bukhari 3906Masjid Quba and piety
Masjid Quba is honoured in authentic hadith. The Prophet ﷺ used to visit Quba, and reports mention him going there on Saturdays, sometimes walking and sometimes riding.
The Qur'anic phrase “a mosque founded on piety from the first day” is connected by many scholars to Masjid Quba, while discussions also exist around its wider meaning. This page avoids forcing what is discussed and presents the connection carefully.
Qur'an 9:108; Sahih al-Bukhari 1193; Sahih Muslim 1399Ali رضي الله عنه arrives
After the Prophet ﷺ left Makkah, Ali رضي الله عنه remained behind to return trusts according to Seerah reports. Once that duty was completed, he also migrated and joined the Prophet ﷺ.
This completes a beautiful thread: the Prophet ﷺ left Makkah under threat, yet the trusts were returned. The Hijrah carried courage and worship, but also honesty down to the last entrusted item.
Seerah reports in Ibn Hisham and Ibn Sa'dA Mosque Founded on Piety
Meaning: “A mosque founded on piety from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in.”
Qur'an 9:108The Joy of the Ansar
The Ansar were not receiving an ordinary traveller. They were receiving the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Their pledge at Aqabah had now become living responsibility. The promise made in the night was becoming public reality in the daylight.
Reports describe joy among the people of Madinah. The city that had been waiting now saw the Prophet ﷺ entering its world. Homes opened, hearts opened, and the name Yathrib would be transformed by Islam into Madinah, the city of the Prophet ﷺ.
Popular songs and lines are often attached to this arrival in later memory. This page keeps the emotional meaning of the welcome without presenting disputed poems or songs as established historical fact.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3906; Seerah reports in Ibn Hisham and Ibn Sa'dAllah Brought Hearts Together
Meaning: “And He brought their hearts together. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have brought their hearts together, but Allah brought them together.”
Qur'an 8:63Entering Madinah
From Quba, the Prophet ﷺ moved toward Madinah. The city was no longer only a refuge. It was about to become the centre of revelation and community.
Every house wanted the honour
Seerah reports mention that people wanted the Prophet ﷺ to stay with them. This was love, honour, and eagerness. Each family wanted the blessing of hosting the Messenger ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ allowed his mount to move by Allah’s command until it stopped at the place where the masjid would be built. This moment teaches surrender. The city received him with love, and he directed hearts toward Allah’s choosing.
The land where the camel stopped became connected to the building of the Prophet’s Mosque, which will be covered in the next chapter in detail.
Seerah reports in Ibn Hisham and Ibn Sa'd; Sahih al-Bukhari 3906 for the broader arrival reportAt the home of Abu Ayyub
Seerah reports mention that the Prophet ﷺ stayed in the home of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari رضي الله عنه when he entered Madinah. This honour became part of the Ansar’s great legacy.
The Prophet ﷺ had no palace waiting. The new stage began in simplicity: a believing home, a soon-to-be-built masjid, and a community ready to obey Allah.
Seerah reports in Ibn Hisham and Ibn Sa'dA city becomes Madinah
The arrival changed the identity of the city. Yathrib became the city of the Prophet ﷺ in meaning and memory. It became the place where revelation would shape public life.
In Makkah, believers had endured pressure. In Madinah, Islam would build worship, brotherhood, agreements, family life, markets, law, defence, and community.
Seerah reports; Qur'an 59:9 praises the home and faith of the AnsarThe First Public Lessons in Madinah
Reports mention early words from the Prophet ﷺ encouraging peace, feeding people, maintaining family ties, and praying at night while people sleep. This meaning fits the opening of Madinah: Islam was not beginning with revenge against Makkah, but with worship, generosity, and social mercy.
The new community needed hearts before walls. It needed salam before arguments, food before pride, prayer before politics, and brotherhood before strategy.
These early teachings show what kind of city Madinah was meant to become: a city where faith changed how people worshipped Allah and how they treated one another.
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2485; Sunan Ibn Majah 3251; reported with supporting routes and commonly cited by scholarsEnter Fully Into Peace
Meaning: “O you who believe, enter into Islam completely.”
Qur'an 2:208Why This Arrival Was More Than Safety
The Prophet ﷺ did not only reach a safer city. He reached the place where Islam would become a lived community.
The masjid came first
The earliest visible foundation was worship and gathering around Allah’s remembrance.
Muhajirun and Ansar
The migrants and helpers would become one community through iman, sacrifice, and love.
Revelation in public life
Madinah would become the place where worship, family, law, defence, charity, and society were shaped by revelation.
Do not make it only celebration
The welcome was joyful, but the deeper meaning was the birth of a believing community after years of pressure.
Do not force disputed poetry
Later popular lines connected to the arrival are not presented here as established historical proof.
Do not skip Quba
Quba is the first resting place near Madinah and is connected to worship, piety, and the earliest visible foundations.
Dua for a Blessed Landing
Meaning: “My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best to accommodate.”
Qur'an 23:29What This Stage Led To
The arrival in Madinah opened the next foundations: the masjid, brotherhood, and the organization of the community.
The Ansar watched for him
The Muslims in Madinah waited eagerly for the Prophet ﷺ after pledging support and protection.
The Prophet ﷺ stayed in Quba
Quba became the first place of rest and worship near Madinah after the Hijrah journey.
The city welcomed him
