First Revelation and Ghar Hira
This chapter gives the first revelation the space it deserves: true dreams, the Prophet’s ﷺ seclusion in Ghar Hira, the coming of Jibril عليه السلام, the first verses of Surah al-Alaq, Khadijah’s رضي الله عنها support, and Waraqah ibn Nawfal’s explanation.
When and Where It Happened
The first revelation is the turning point where the Qur'an began to descend upon the final Messenger ﷺ.
About age 40
The Prophet ﷺ was about 40 years old when revelation began. This came after years of truthfulness, noble character, family life, and worshipful solitude.
Around 610 CE
Using the common birth estimate around 570 CE, the first revelation is commonly placed around 610 CE, in the early 7th century CE.
Ghar Hira
Ghar Hira is the cave of Hira on Jabal al-Nur near Makkah. It is remembered because the first revelation came there.
Why Ghar Hira Matters
Ghar Hira was not just a location. It was the quiet place where Allah prepared His Messenger ﷺ for the heaviest responsibility ever given to a human being: receiving revelation and calling mankind back to Allah.
Before the first command came, the Prophet ﷺ had already lived as al-Amin, the trustworthy one. As revelation drew near, solitude became beloved to him. He would go to Hira for worship, then return to Khadijah رضي الله عنها for provisions, then go back again.
This was not running away from life. It was Allah preparing his heart away from the idols, noise, and corruption of Makkah. The cave was quiet, but what would begin there would shake the world with guidance.
The Preparation Before Jibril عليه السلام Came
Authentic hadith shows that revelation began with preparation before the direct meeting with the angel.
True dreams like the break of dawn
Sahih al-Bukhari reports that the beginning of revelation to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was true dreams. Whatever he saw in those dreams came clearly like the break of dawn.
This was a gentle opening before the first direct encounter with Jibril عليه السلام. The unseen was drawing near by Allah’s command.

The Prophet ﷺ would spend nights in Hira worshipping Allah before returning to his family for provisions. This worship happened before the detailed law of Islam was revealed, so it is described carefully as worship and turning away from the false ways of his people.
Khadijah رضي الله عنها supported this stage. She was part of the mercy Allah placed around His Messenger ﷺ before the mission became public.

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ
Meaning: “Read in the name of your Lord who created. Created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by the pen, taught man that which he knew not.”

The story should be taught with awe and restraint. The authentic report is already powerful without adding imagination.
Jibril عليه السلام came
While the Prophet ﷺ was in Ghar Hira, Jibril عليه السلام came to him. This was the first direct meeting with the angel of revelation.
The command was: Read
Jibril عليه السلام said, “Read.” The Prophet ﷺ replied that he was not able to read. This shows that the Qur'an was not authored by him or learned from books. It was revelation from Allah.
The angel held him
The authentic report mentions that the angel held him and pressed him until he reached the limit of what he could bear, then released him and repeated the command.
The first verses were revealed
After the command was repeated, the opening verses of Surah al-Alaq were recited. The first revelation began with reading, creation, the Lord, the pen, and teaching.
He returned trembling
The Prophet ﷺ returned to Khadijah رضي الله عنها with his heart shaken by the weight of what had happened. He asked to be covered.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3The Weight of the First Revelation
Sometimes people read the word “Read” quickly and miss the weight of the moment. This was the beginning of the final revelation to mankind. The Qur'an was entering the world through the heart of the final Messenger ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ did not leave Hira casually. He returned shaken, asking to be covered. This was not ordinary fear. It was the human response to the tremendous reality of revelation and the meeting with the angel sent by Allah.
That first moment teaches us that revelation is not a human invention, a poetic feeling, or a personal idea. It is from Allah, carried by Jibril عليه السلام, received by Muhammad ﷺ, and preserved as guidance for the world.
A Heavy Word
إِنَّا سَنُلْقِي عَلَيْكَ قَوْلًا ثَقِيلًا
Meaning: “Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word.”

The first place the Prophet ﷺ went after Hira was home. Allah had placed beside him the one who would believe first and comfort him first.
“Cover me, cover me”
The Prophet ﷺ came to Khadijah رضي الله عنها and asked to be covered. She covered him until the fear settled. This small home scene carries enormous meaning.
The first human comfort after the first revelation came through Khadijah رضي الله عنها. She did not panic or accuse him. She responded with trust.
Her words were full of certainty
Khadijah رضي الله عنها said that Allah would never disgrace him because he upheld family ties, carried burdens, helped the needy, honoured guests, and supported truth.
These words show that his character before revelation was already known deeply in his home.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3Waraqah ibn Nawfal Explains What Happened
Khadijah رضي الله عنها took the Prophet ﷺ to Waraqah ibn Nawfal, who had knowledge of earlier scripture. Waraqah listened and recognized that the one who came to the Prophet ﷺ was the same angelic messenger who had come to Musa عليه السلام.
Waraqah also said that the Prophet ﷺ would be opposed by his people. This was heavy: revelation brought honour from Allah, but it would also bring resistance from people.
The story of Hira therefore does not end with a beautiful cave scene. It opens the door to Prophethood, Qur'an, dawah, patience, opposition, and the rebuilding of human life upon tawhid.

The first revelation became the beginning of Prophethood, Qur'an, dawah, patience, and the long struggle to bring people back to Allah.
Khadijah رضي الله عنها believed first
She became the first person to believe in the Prophet ﷺ and the first to support him when revelation began.
The message began with knowledge
The first verses began with reading, creation, the Lord, the pen, and teaching. Islam begins with revelation and knowledge.
Opposition was coming
Waraqah ibn Nawfal understood from earlier scripture that Prophets are opposed by their people. Honour from Allah would be followed by patience.
Why the First Word Was “Read”
The first command was not about wealth, power, tribe, or revenge. It was “Read” in the name of the Lord. This first word placed knowledge under the name of Allah, so learning would not become arrogance and worship would not become ignorance.
The verses remind the human being of creation from a clinging substance, then lift the human being through teaching by the pen. The beginning of revelation joins humility and honour together: man is created from weakness, yet Allah teaches him what he did not know.
This is why the story of Ghar Hira is not only about a cave. It is about the first opening of Qur'an upon the world and the beginning of a light that would reshape hearts, homes, worship, law, character, and civilization.

Ghar Hira is remembered because the first revelation came there, not because visiting the cave is a required act of worship.
The Prophet ﷺ was prepared by Allah
The true dreams, love of solitude, and worship in Hira were part of Allah’s preparation before revelation began.
